wood burning fireplace air leak
Comments (3)This problem is common and has been discussed on this forum recently. You might want to do a search on the forum, but I'm not sure what word or words will locate those previous discussions. So I'll give a brief summary. Many fireplaces, especially prefabs, are equipped with an air intake opening somewhere in the firebox. Its purpose is to provide fresh air and oxygen to feed the combustion and to reduce or eliminate the need to open a window to compensate for the negative air pressure that results from a chimney fire. Look around inside the firebox. Use a flash light, because it may be hidden and covered with soot. If the fireplace is on an outside wall, you should see an opening on the exterior of the wall. There is usually a sort of trap door that you can close to stop the draft when you do not have a fire going (or there should be one)....See Moreodd smell from wood burning fireplace(s)
Comments (1)Well sealed doors will almost certainly stop the smell. Perhaps more important is what causes the smell. If damp wood has been burned previously this can cause deposits in the chimney as it doesn't get a chance to warm up thus the humidity in the wood condenses in the flue. This can also lead to deposits of creosote, this has a 'distinctive' odor and can be potentially dangerous as it is highly flammable and often a cause of chimney fires. Maybe best to get it checked out by a professional?...See MoreHelp - Wood Burning Fireplace Options for New Build
Comments (4)To get the best answers for your area, find and talk to someone who specilizes in installing fireplaces. Here around Madison WI I used a place called United Brick & Fireplace, but there are 4-5 others, this is just the one my builder recommended. DH wanted the old fashion heat sucking open fireplace that would be pretty and sound and smell like a wood fire. I wanted something that would heat the house offer the ambience of a fireplace, but not the heat sucking effect. Like a free-standing wood stove. We discovered you can get a hi-eff wood stove that is set into a masonary fireplace! The door will open on the front when hubby wants the crackle & smell, it won't suck heat out of the house, and it will offer the firelight and heat. Bonus! some of them you can even order a cooking arm and pot to cook over the fire. Anyhow we went with this one. Comments (12)We had wood burning, and while I very much enjoyed the sights, sounds, warmth of a wood burning fire, we converted to gas. I do not miss the dusting, vacuuming, cleaning the fireplace. While we had wood, we were able to cut our own firewood which was a satisfying project at our ages then. I suppose we could still do it now, but cutting, loading, hauling and splitting wood aren't very high on my list of satisfying chores these days - and ordering, buying firewood has become expensive. Truthfully, we don't use the gas fireplace that often. This sprawled out one story house (1955) isn't hard to heat with natural gas radiant in the ceilings. I have the fire going during storms, or for the ambiance occasionally and when expecting winter guests and wanting the house to feel welcoming....See Moreakamainegrower
