dancytm, Many platform beds accomodate mattresses only. I did see one or two at Eurway.com that said they accomodated both a mattress and a foundation/boxspring if desired. BTW, I have a "real" boxspring, made with coils. The boxspring really interact with the mattress and adds to the comfort. It is made by McRoskey. Many high end mattress manufacturers, such as McRoskey, Hastens, Vi-Spring, Reylon, etc., still make "real" boxsprings. Most of the other mattress companies make only foundations that do not have coils and really only elevate the mattress. So I guess this brings up a good question. Do you have a "real" boxspring or do you have a foundation? If it is a foundation, is the reason you want to use it, so that the mattress sits higher? BTW, a mattress on a platform bed will feel firmer than a mattress on a "real" boxspring. Here is a link that might be useful: eurway.com

I would do a lot of homework as mattresses have changed the past few years. Fell in love with a Simmons Beautyrest myself a few years ago. Didn't even get the pillow top just the plush top. Bought the top of the line. Less than a year later, there was a big crater where I slept(130 lbs). Because of new flammability standards it is very hard to find anything other than a "no-flip" mattress. They say this is for your convenience but in truth it is just cheaper to put the higher grade safety material on just one side. Without being able to flip my Beautyrest it isn't possible to get even wear. Same with Serta, Sealy and most others. I was able to order a Doctor's Choice from Denver Mattress last year that they still had in the warehouse that was flippable(is that a word?:-)). They no longer make them either. When we were shopping for the first one we thought a saleman was just handing us a line when he told us to stay away from no-flip. Now we are wiser. And Skypath is correct. I would never buy a pillowtop, plush is as soft as you should go. Even with a mattress that flips.

We have the standard box springs with pillow top mattress. Our bed frames then raised the beds even higher. So the top of my mattresses our about my hip heighth (I am 5'8) Our traditional nightstands were too low. As a temporary solution we used Buffet lamps for lighting, but had to reach for the alarm clock, etc. I now use an old secretary desk as my nightstand now (it does not have a roll top) and it is the perfect heighth. However it is a treck to get in and out of bed without a stool. Just something to consider, not sure if you were also using a standard mattress or a pillowtop.

I had a boxspring trauma when I bought a mattress and box spring in a department store after looking at their samples. The salesperson asked if I wanted a full height box spring or a half. I said I wanted the full height since they were the same price. I should have asked what was on the showroom floor. Because when it was delivered, I would have needed a ladder to get in and out of the bed. The delivery guy said he sees this all the time. He had to take it back and bring the half height. I sent an email to the store stating my displeasure with their service and how it could have been avoided. It had been such a long time since I had purchased a mattress that there wasn't such a thing as a choice in height. I know that ultimately it was my responsibility but could have used a little communication from the salesperson. It would have saved them time and money. It didn't cost me anything (other than the loss of use for a day or so) to have them switch it out.
