How to address dips on plywood subfloor prior to hardwood install

We have some dips in our plywood subfloor, up to 1/4 inch approximately in some areas in a hallway to the bedrooms. My understanding is it has to do the way they laid the subfloor in the late 1970s. Before we bought the house there was a structural engineer report that said the building was sound. But we want to place engineered hardwood over the area and want to know ways to fix it.

Have received a bunch of options from installers

- just add more felt/padding to build up the areas and float the floor

- Thinset/Self leveling cement and Nail down wood over it

- Thinset/Self leveling cement then also adding 1/4" plywood over it and nail down

- Just take it out and put new plywood down

What is the most reasonable solution while not breaking the bank? (I have already tried talking my wife into carpeting the area, but that idea didn't fly too well)

Thanks
