Ashley furniture or havertys?

Hello everyone!

My wife and I just bought our first house and we are looking to furnish it right away. We have found a similar bedroom set and reclining leather match living room set (sofa, loveseat, and recliner) at both Ashley furniture and Havertys. Both stores are willing to price match. So, I have two questions:

1) who has better quality/customer service, Ashley or Havertys?

2) does anyone have experience with leather match? Would you recommend or not and why? We found a reclining leather match set for $2900 does that sound like a good price for the three pieces?

I usually buy much higher quality stuff, but I went into both stores to look for a BR set for my 3 year old -- something that I wouldn't mind her chipping and scratching, etc. and that I could get rid of when she leaves for college. The Haverty's product seemed to be slightly better constructed, with wood veneers instead of particle board, better blocking in the corners, etc. I have one other piece from Ashley and after 2 years it looks awful. Definitely "disposable" furniture.

Have you considered saving up a little more and buying better quality stuff that will last you longer? Nothing like having to buy a new couch in 5 years because it's falling apart.

We just bought a huge (11' in each direction) fabric sectional from Smith Brothers, with a lifetime guarantee, for $7k. I don't plan on having to buy another sofa until I retire in 20+ years.

Both are the low end of furniture quality, Ashley is a manufacturer and sells through a dealership type program where Havertys is a retailer but does source from overseas direct. Buying leather upholstery from Ashley or Havertys is like going to Dennys for a top sirloin steak dinner.

In the past, Havertys had different furniture brands for sale in their stores. Now, every item in their stores carries the Havertys' label. A Havertys saleswoman showed me sofas with the Havertys' label which she said were actually made by Bernhardt and other sofas made by (I think) Allen White. I read one remark online that said Havertys contracts with manufacturers to make furniture for them, that Havertys gets their cost down on furniture by cutting corners and that the Havertys brand today isn't as high quality as the furniture sold in their stores in the past.

I bought a recliner in the Greenwood Indiana store on March 13 shortly after moving to the area and due to my rural location I opted to have the item delivered. My phone number changed during this time but Ashley had my correct Internet email address. The whole of March went by without a delivery or contact with Ashley. Finally, I went down to the Greenwood store on April 9 and gave them my current phone number. On Wednesday April 13 they called and told me they would be there between 3 and 6 pm Thursday. Waited around all day Thursday till after 6 pm. Nothing. No delivery, no phone call, nothing. Called up Friday mornoing, April 15. Was assured delivery would be between 3-6pm that day, Friday. Had to do things so arrived back at my place a few minutes after 3. Found a door hanger that Ashley had been there but missed me. A call to the number on the door hanger yielded the info that the delivery person had waited an hour and left the hanger at 3:08 pm. If so, he arrived at my place well outside the 3-6 pm window. Called Ashley and they said the "window" was just a suggested time. How about the truth- that you should stay at your house all day to wait for the delivery? At least you won't get people pissed off that way. Now my stuff won't be delivered until Wednesday April 20 even though it was paid for in full March 13. I read the contract, and even though Ashley's performance has been abysmal, I can't get a refund. Bullsh*t. Because of this company's lackadaisical attitude towards customer service, they will get no repeat service. I for one will never spend another dime with them. And I will tell everyone I know who is contemplating a purchase with Ashley Furniture of my experience. In five years they will be gone and people will say "Ashley who?" Bottom line: If it's not in stock and they want you to order it, don't spend your money there. In manufacturing, this is known as JIT (just-in-time) ordering. That means it isn't built until it's ordered. Fine for manufactiuring but terrble for retailing. The merchant is fully protected, and the customer bears all the responsibility and consequence. Bottom line: Ashley Furniture are crooks!

Buying furniture from Ashley Furniture is a mistake. I want to warn people about this store. This place is a scam. Here are just a few of the complaints I have: They are horrible. I am trying to save you from the pain and anguish that comes from buying furniture from this place. I wish someone had warned us earlier. The customer service is non-existent. If there is a mistake on your furniture order, and trust me they will sometimes deliver the wrong furniture to your house, it will take them months and months to fix the issue. You can try to escalate it to hire ups but that will get you nowhere because they will ignore your emails and phone calls. Their delivery drivers never come on time or they come earlier or later than expected and then they will make you reschedule to have it be delivered at another date. Sometimes the delivery drivers don't show up at all. That happened to us three times so far. I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau, my local consumer protection office, and The Federal Trade Commission. We've waited months and months for a single chair to be delivered. It has yet to show up. They will also claim that they can't find any of your paperwork. Another fun thing that they try to do is put you in the middle between the actual store location employees and the escalation department with both of them saying that they can't do anything to help you or that once you reached escalation you cannot go any further up in management from there to complain about anything or find a resolution to your issue. So this really leaves you stuck with no solution. They'll do this to you for a while just to stall time hoping that you eventually just give up. They keep you on hold forever if you're calling about a problem, they don't return calls and they don't respond to any of your emails. It's almost like they get some kind of sick enjoyment out of just making everything harder for you. Please do not shop here. This has been a never ending nightmare for us. If you have Reddit and search "Ashley Furniture" you'll see a lot of bad reviews/bad experiences with them as well.

I have a dining set and matching hutch from Ashley. I loved the design and the look but the quality is really pretty bad. It is not durable and when you look closer, the construction is pretty shabby.

Luckily, these pieces do not get a lot of wear. But, unfortunately, it doesn't take a lot of use to show problems. Save your money and invest in better quality pieces.

My husband and I purchased Ashley furniture a number of years back, for the same reason (get more rooms filled up fast). With the exception of a love seat we don't sit on much, all the pieces showed sagging, fabric wear and tears within months. We purchased some bar stools which were OK, but everything else really was junk. Hind sight is 2020. Given the opportunity to go back and re-do the purchase we'd have waited and purchased quality pieces - we'd have them now instead of replacing them and increasing our long term costs.

I have bought from havertys on several times and found it pretty good quality. Recently, I bought a nice couch from LazyBoy, and we are very happy with it so we will buy from them again. I don't care much for Ashley.
