Is it worth buying used sofas to reupholster?
Comments (22)You may want to look into Key City Furniture. http://www.keycity.com/Quality.aspx I just had a Key City sofa that I bought at an estate sale for $200 reupholstered for $1,500 (labor and fabric). The sofa was probably 10 years old when I bought it and I have had it for 10 years. The former owners probably did not use it much but we use it nearly ever day. It would have cost me $6,000 for similar quality new. The upholsterer said it was still in excellent condition and need no work at all. Mine had 10 way hand-tied springs and all kiln dried hardwood and it is made in the USA. I believe Key City still makes a similar sofa to mine and it is not too deep and very comfortable. The style of mine is very similar to 914-90 in the link below except mine has T-cushions. http://www.keycity.com/Gallery.aspx?category=sofa If $7k is your budget I would go new from a quality manufacture or shop estate sales and high-end consignment shops and then get it reupholstered. Also, make sure to check on-line for your fabric. I get mine for less than 1/2 the price the upholstered was quoting....See MoreFabric color type and help for couch (reupholstering)
Comments (1)Microfiber is very durable. We just purchased a sofa that has a microfiber that looks and feels like suede-very soft to the touch. With children, I'd definitely stick with a medium to dark shade. Mushroom, green and burgundy or brick red would all look good with Ivoire, IMO....See MoreHave you reupholstered ONLY seat cushions on a leather sofa?
Comments (9)we have a sofa from almost 20 yrs ago with fabric cushions and a leather base- i really liked it, because it had the leather look with the comfort of the fabric- warmer in the winter and didn't 'stick' to bare skin in the summer! i think it would look fine if you reupholstered the cushions in a fabric- esp if you put a couple/few throw pillows on it too! (another advantage of cloth seat is the throw pillows 'stay'!) i thought mixed pieces like that were 'coming back' anyway- i think i've seen some again in stores at least!...See MoreReupholstering a sectional sofa in faux or recycled leather
Comments (1)Recycled leather and faux leather are not the same. The former is actual animal hides that have been reclaimed from other furniture, and the latter is generally vinyl or some other similar material made to look like leather. Some companies refer to faux leather as "vegan leather" because it's made of plastic. Regardless, $3000 is a lot to spend when you could put that toward something new. If you're worried about the sofa ending up in a landfill, call around to local charities that accept gently used furniture and donate it....See MoreToronado3800 Zone 6 St Louis
