Replacing Preway Fireplace

I currently have a preway fireplace in my home. I used California Driftwood (fabricated stone from Zoll Stone) to surround it. My hearth is approx. 18" high. The preway is not at all efficient and I have a smoke problem. The unit is now approx. 20 years old and the damper has rusted and cannot be used. I need to replace it with either an insert or a free standing woodburner. The inserts I can fit in my preway seem to be pretty small plus there is a concern about whether the weight of an insert might be too heavy for the support I have. I have had people tell me to remove the hearth to make a larger space and figure out how to "patch" the fireplace. The other option is tearing it all out and putting a free-standing woodburner in the house. I really hate to take out the fireplace because it does add to the looks of the house but I need something that will help me heat my house during the winter. Does anyone have any suggestions?
