Some Thoughts on our recent 1200 sq ft installation of Brazilian Teak 3/4" x 3-1/4" solid - grade: clear prefinished- Sold to us by Timeless Flooring Products of Newnan GA - Produced by Robinson Lumber of New Orleans LA and installed by Paul Alexander, a local installer recommended by Timeless. We did our entire main floor except bathrooms and kitchen. We bought 1200 sq ft (13.89 sq ft per box) and had 4 boxes left over. There was very little scrap. 5 boards in all that flooring were rejected. We have had the floor in for about 5 months now and love it. I wanted to wait a while before I posted, just in case things changed.
I also want to mention Brazilian Direct here. We didn't end up buying from them, but they were really great to work with and I would not hesitate to recommend working with them. Interestingly, before we bought the flooring we had it down the Timeless and Brazilian direct and order one box from each to see their actual product. I highly recommend doing this from ANY supplier. We eliminated Asian Walnut as a choice after buying one box and seeing it laid down over the carpet in our living room. Great deep red wood, but it SHOWS EVERYTHING - hair dirt, everything. Anyway, both Timeless Flooring of Newnan and Brazilian Direct shipped us the exact same product. Brazilian Teak (Cumaru) made in Bolivia for Robinson Lumber of New Orleans. Brazilian Direct would have been about $700 cheaper than Timeless Flooring Products, but I couldn't figure out how I was going to get 70 or so boxes at 80lbs each off a truck in an hour. My local guy had it delivered and the extra money included inside delivery (well worth it, his two delivery guys were worn out after carrying it all in).
The wood is fantastic. A light brown slightly red with lots of light and dark mix. In natural light it is a light brown mix. Under inside lighting (Incandescent?) it has an amazing red tint. we loved Brazilian Cherry as it is when you buy it, but it darkens down a LOT. Our Brazilian Teak has darkened slightly in 4 months, but its not really noticeable. i highly recommend the Brazilian Teak if you love a mix color. Brazilian Direct has a picture on their website with a cat in it, ours looks just like that picture. If I can figure how to link a picture or two I will.
I was also very happy we had a professional installer put it in. he knew a lot of tricks I had not read about. We had a lot of angles and did all the closets too, so there was a lot of cuts. He and his helper did 1200 sq ft in four days of HARD work. I highly recommend Paul Alexander.
We did find four spots in all 1200 sq ft installed which we considered minor issues. 2 were boards where a corner was chamfered by maybe 1/4". 2 other had an angle on one side so it left a little gap. Not bad for that much lumber. A little wood filler and only we would ever notice. They did have 3 boxes open at any one time so they could ensure a good light/dark mix.
So far we love the hardness and finish. We have a large (75lbs) Australian Shepard/lab mix dog. No issues at all with her nails scratching the finish. My wife did go see the vet and have the vet show her how to sand down the dogs nails (not clip - sand - amazing what you can do with a Dremel with the barrel sanding tip - highly recommended over clipping). We have seen a few small dents already, but very few, mostly next too our 6 and 8 year old daughters bed where they drop there full sippy cups in the middle of the night - never would have figured that one. Overall, the wood is awesome compared to the oak floors I had growing up.
Finally, we live in Georgia near Atlanta, and although the winter's aren't real cold, you definitely need to manage humidity if you are going to spend $10K plus on flooring. We bought a hygrometer at Home Depot to measure humidity and even though we were running 60/40 temps, we were in the 20%-27% humidity range. Hardwoods are supposed to be 40%-60%. We did go ahead and install a humidifier on the furnace for the main floor - we choose a Honeywell Truesteam because of family asthma issues. $1200 ouch! But it included the IAQ system with a new programmable thermostat and seems to work really well. It's amazing the difference in static in the house with 50% humidity now vs. the 20% we had before.
Overall, $14k spent and we have amazing floors, a well groomed dog, and eliminated our static electricity control. Life is good!
