Home Legend Birch Hardwood floor from Home Depot

Does anyone have experience with Homelegend Natural Birch Wood Flooring. It was on the end cap of one of the rows at Home Depot and on "Contractor sale" for $3.50/sft.

It is exactly the color and price range I've been looking for and I bought one box to check it out. It's 5/8" x 3.5" planks and has HDF core with real wood on the surface and hardwood backing. They don't have any matching trim at the Home Depot. And there are no installation instructions in the box so no 800 numbers to call. I really would like to find out what my options for trim are and if anyone has any experience with it and can comment on durability and how well the locking mechanism works. Also did anyone get instructions in their carton? THANKS!

I am also interested in sourcing trim and transitions for use with this flooring. It is now $2.47 per sq ft at Home Depot in Texas.

The locking mechanism appears to be simple to use and we are planning on installing most of it ourselves, and relying on a carpenter to do the finish work.

I purchased a box today at HD to try it before I buy a whole bunch. It seems very difficult to start a second row. The ends do not "lock-in" as stated in the directions. In the directions it explains to put the 2nd row together, then
angle it at a 45 degree angle to "snap" it into the first row. This is not a likely option if the rows are more than 5 feet wide (it would take several people down the row for a 10 foot row to hold and angle before snapping it into the prior row- and with the ends not locking in properly each board slides out). almost any prefinished hardwood the recommended cleaning is a product like Bona (home depot) normally sells it with a microfiber mop. You don't really need much of cleaner but the method would be to lightly spray the mop with cleaner or water and then go over the floor. Unless the floor is heavily soiled plain water would be the best. Don't use products from the grocery store. HD sold a mop like a swiffer that sprayed the floor. It was a Bona product.

I have not heard of that brand but we purchased the Bella Cera Ruscello flooring and when the boxes showed up it said the dreaded "Made in China" on them. What could I do at that point? We had it installed and are very happy. There is not one piece in the 1100 sq ft that has a flaw. Now, it has only been a few months, but no problems so far... And we also did about 60 sq ft of LM St Laurent flooring in our vanity area almost 2 years ago, it was "Made in China", which I did not know until later, no problems with it either.

The Home-Depot stuff normally has a 2mm wear layer (that's the very top layer of wood that is "oak" everything else below that is "something else"). The finish is a 7 layer Aluminum Oxide (AO) Urethane. That means the chances of refinishing this are slim to nil. Both the wear layer (3mm is the MINIMUM requirement to get a sand/refinish out of it) and the AO finish will make this wood near-impossible to "fix up" at a later date. At $1.96/sf, the install will be more expensive than the wood. And the subfloor preparation will be more expensive than the wood. Carpets hide the WORST POSSIBLE subfloors. Hardwood floors need real plywood for installation. Carpet RARELY has "real" plywood underneath it. So you will need to UPGRADE your subfloor. That costs money. Most types of OSB are not a good "fit" for sitting underneath hardwood so if it is there, you will need to upgrade. And fibre board (often seen underneath carpet) is a No-No for hardwood - upgrade/rip out will be needed. As you can see, to get these hardwoods in place, you will need to do some upgrades to the subfloor before putting it down. The other thing you may want to be aware of is the "average life expectancy" of a floor in a rental property = 7 years. Your subfloor + labor costs could run as high as $6 - $8/sf. That is 4 TIMES the amount the flooring costs. That's high. We normally like to see labor+prep prices that are only 1-2 times the price (same price as the floor or a snick more). Ask yourself whether or not the property will bring in the price to cover the higher than usual subfloor costs. And whether or not that seems like a good idea for a floor that may only last 7 years regardless of the subfloor prep.

Ok...For $4.98/sf this is a look-a-like product with a coloured finish (stain/pickling product) with traditional urethane finish. Not bad...but you get what you pay for. And urethane is a traditional finish that will scratch happily. That is not "wrong". It is not a defect. It is simply the truth of a traditional urethane finish. And at this price....you can't ask for much more. The thickness is 1/2". Again, for the price, that's about as thick as you can hope for. The write up is showing 7 layers of engineered flooring. For a thin(ner) product there are MANY layers. Which probably means there isn't much more than 2mm of wear layer. And if it is 2mm, then you will never get a refinish out of these floors. Never. The fact that HD does NOT advertise the thickness of the wear layer TELLS ME it is very thin. Remember: a THICK wear layer is to be advertised and celebrated! I thin wear layer (as I suspect this is) is a drawback that the company does NOT want you to know. If it isn't advertised then it is probably very thin. So....there you have it. You are looking at a lower quality product, with a lower quality finish (standard urethane is now considered passe because there are tougher one's out there) with a wear layer that is *probably very thin. Sounds just about right for $4.98/sf. And remember, the installation of hardwood (engineered or not) can be the same price as the wood product. Please don't use HD installers. If you have any concerns with floor preparation (in other words you NEED floor prep) then the HD installers/quotes will miss this step entirely....thus leading to months of headaches. Personally I would look at a HIGH END laminate with the right optics. It will be roughly the same price (possibly a few cents cheaper) and it will most likely offer a much longer life span of "happy" than a very cheap (yet pretty) engineered wood floor from HD. And installing laminate is MUCH cheaper than engineered hardwood. Thus saving tons of money if budget is a concern. LVT in this price range will purchase PLENTY of quality with much better "wearability" than low priced engineered hardwood. JMHO.

Has anyone found a way to get the trim. I am thinking of just using inch round over for wall trim if I cannot find it, but I just cannot find a match for door ways?

We installed these floors. I really like how they look! Difficult to do first couple of rows, but after that it went pretty smoothly! We have a very large dog, but no scratches are too noticible yet. We put about 4 or more rows together decently, then went back and hammered with a crow bar from one far end to tighten each row length wise. Then used a plastic block and hammer to tighten the locks the other way. Only complaint.....finding matching thresholds! I don't want to splurge on the thresholds and would love for them to be the same brand. let me know if anyone finds them. I'll call the number tomorrow to see if they can help us out at all.

Most hardwood mfctrs do not make their own trim. They are almost all outsourced. Its not that hard to find a trim that will work, but don't expect a 'matching' trim piece. There are just too many brands to carry trim for each one, but usually the stain colors are pretty universal so finding one that works shouldn't be too hard.

Go back to (or call) Home Depot - they should have a manufacturer's catalog with trim pieces if they are available. They can also call the manufacturer for you to find out if they have trim pieces to order. Most do. If they do not - you can see if any of the laminate trim pieces in stock in the flooring section will match your floor.

I installed this in my br. It looks really nice, but seems kind of delicate in terms of scratching and I wouldn't put it in a high traffic area.

Installation was really easy and the pieces fit together perfectly.
