This is the third season I've used a Fireplace Xtrordinair gas INSERT & it's been a solid performer -- no problems, good heating capability, variable blower & will work as a radiant heater if the power is out. More of a traditional look (although many, many different faceplates are available).

If I were going for a new-construction gas fireplace, I would probably consider a Town & Country. Don't know about performance or reliability, but the one in my local stove store is beautiful -- very large viewing area.

I've read here that Mendota & Harmon are nice, too, but I haven't seen those.

With new construction - how do you decide whether to use vented or vent-free gas logs? I really like the feel of the un-vented logs (no glass) - but everyone talkes about how you are compromising your indoor air quality.
What are you choosing and why?

blueginger -- Gas logs (and not the direct-vent, sealed fireplace heating units I referenced above), in general, are more for looks than heating capability. If that's what you want, though, here's a link for an overview. Unvented logs are more controversial, and prohibited in some areas, so check with your local building authority to see if they're permitted.

We are beginning new construction that will include a direct-vent gas fireplace. I went to a local dealer and left frustrated because they said they need to get back to me with a price for a Fireplace Extraordinair unit. I can't find any prices on the web for this brand, which usually isn't a sign of affordability. Any suggestions for other brands? Better vendors? Similar experiences?

Patrick_D -- When I was pricing insert units (not fireplaces) a couple of years ago, the local dealer gave me a pricing sheet for the Fireplace Xtrordinair unit & accessories. My dealer carried a number of different brands, so he even called his distributor while I was still in the store to verify when the FPX prices were increasing so I would have the most current info. If the dealer you visited can't do that for you, try someone else. The FPX website should have a list of authorized dealers. FPX sister company Avalon also offers gas fireplaces.

For alternatives in fireplace units, it depends on the look you want. Harmon has a good reputation here, as does Mendota, I believe, but I've not seen these brands. My local dealer has added Town & Country units & they look great, but I don't know much about them. All of these manufacturers have dealer locators on their websites. Good luck!

If you have a gas fireplace with direct vent out the wall, does the wall or air get very hot? Currently I have some plants on the outside wall and was wondering if the vent would "cook" them.
