basically, it's a paper sleeve for your debit or credit card (print, cut out, fold, and glue) that lists questions you should answer before you decide to buy it.

The deer seem to like some of the plants from the Lily family. I'm growing several different Lily varieties, including the 8 foot bushy Breck's LilyTrees and found out that the Dial soap in the colorful socks seem to keep them away from my flower and veggies. The deer seem to pass up my area when passing through the evergreens and other trees behind my house. But, they visit my neighbors yards and wander through them and cross the streets via same, but, not mine... When I lived on a couple acres in a heavly treed area area beforehand and had a veggie garden 120 feet long by about 30 feet wide and had a 4 foot fence around same, they would jump the fence and visit my 20 foot long raised beds that were full of veggie crops. There, had raccons that gave me some competition and would even beat me to my corn when it was ready for picking and the like along with some other crops too... Now, in a senior citizens development and container gardening. This year, have 10 containers alongside the house/building that contain Lily flowers and a few veggies in the 30 to 50 gallon Rubber Maid type containers, both circular and oblong. Drilled holes in the bottom of the containers for drainage, and bars of Dial soap in the socks near all of them, and hanging off of the tomato cages etc. I like to use the Square Foot Garden method in the containers. THE PHOTO: Had just planted veggies last month in these 4 containers and have netting across same to keep the birds away from the newly planted herbs and veggie plants. Note the bar of soap hanging off of the waggon wheel. Added more of same to this area to keep the deer away... Have the Pink Flamingos "on Duty" in NJ... $25K is the estimate my contractor has given me for a standard master bath remodel. I'm in LA area. I have a five-piece, 10'x14' bathroom. I've not started demo yet. My contractor said that the costs increase by adding luxury items, but that won't change the labor costs as much. For example, plumber's charge for installing a $2000 Kallista tub faucet will be about the same as installing a $300 Price Phister tub faucet. The total estimate for Kallista plumbing fixtures (for shower, tub, and 2 washbasins) came to over $9K. Some luxury items will bump up the labor costs - e.g., replacing my existing inoperable sky light with a remote-controlled, rain-sensor, UV-protected, operable sky light will add labor - and it looks like I will need to replace the sub panel for electrical. A $2K wall-mounted, Toto toilet would be more costly to install than a $700 conventional toilet. Some luxury items are controlled by code. For example, in the shower, I can have water coming out of only one fixture at a time (the carwash shower approach is not an option in an area where water conservation is an issue, unless it's completed after inspection.) No chandelier over the tub unless ceiling is raised to 11'. Steam shower requires ceiling tile; optional, otherwise. A big Jacuzzi tub on a platform with lots of tile work would not be standard. There's also the cost of maintenance to consider. For me, the budget challenge is in deciding which luxury items I really want, since it would be impractical to add them later (floor heating, towel warmer, linear drain, chromotherapy, ceiling tile, electric mirror with inset TV, tub spout in the ceiling). I would need to hire a housekeeper to keep this bathroom looking pristine.

My lost & found experiences: Like a lot of people I often think how great it would be to find a bunch of money. But I always hope that If I do, PLEASE let there be no ID with it, because thanks to that guilt trip my Mom (very religious) laid on my when I was a kid, I'd have to do all I could to locate the rightful owner. I wouldn't ask for a reward either. I wouldn't turn it in anywhere because I believe that sadly in this day and age the average person would just pocket it. Found $65 on the floor of a nightclub in Avalon NJ, just the money, no ID. Sweet! Found $30 in Sears parking lot at Neshaminy Mall, NE Phila. - no car parked nearby. Again, cash only. Found a passport walking from the train to work. Tracked down the owner, called, said I'd bring it over. Knocked / rang the bell, no answer, car in the driveway. I think they didn't want to risk me asking for a reward (I wouldn't). I left it in the mailbox. When my 24 year old daughter was 3 she found a childs wallet in the playground with $3 and address / phone number inside. She wanted to keep it but I said we have to return it. The mother didn't eveen say thank you. I gave Kris $1 as a reward. When I delivered pizza part time I found $43 with no ID in the shop but it was where the drivers congregated and there was only one other driver working with me. I returned the money. Older peope are no more or less honest than the younger ones. Again as a pizza deliverer, I took an order to a florist shop. When they paid me I put the money in my jacket pocket, something I never did, usually. Walking back to the car I reached in to retrieve the money & felt only change. I turn back toward the door - I'm about 30 feet away - and the old lady who ran the register by the door is scuttling toward the bill, a ten, reaching for it when her eyes met mine. I quickly said 'Looks like I dropped my change.' She replied 'Yeah, I guess so.' or something like that. She got up and walked back inside.

"DD's theory is that due to the global financial crisis, fashion has come to a grinding halt. Nothing new. So the trend lag between here and Europe has collapsed and we're seeing the same stuff everywhere. This is from my 16 y.o. fashion analyst! :-)" Out of the mouths of babes... The Italians are over, this week, and are doing all they can to help the American economy. They came with huge lists from their family and friends. It's all Abercrombie & Fitch. That brand has taken Italy by storm, maybe the rest of Europe, too. They used to buy only Polo. I guess the lines at their stores go on forever and the prices are absurd. With the exchange rate...they're in heaven. We had a dinner last night and I forgot to ask what Italian brand was hot now. Last time it was Roberto Cavalli but his things are way too young for me. I'll stick with Armani if I'm still alive to see the dollar reign, once more.

I would probably never buy anything if I started using that. I would end up in rags, a bag lady, using cardboard boxes for furniture. :)

Knowing how much MONEY I have to spend and what I need to buy is what allows me to stay comfortably BELOW my means. "I don't need no stinkin' gadget".

It all comes down to "want" and "need". Nothing wrong with either want or need. The trouble comes when you begin thinking "want" is more important than "need".

Until you are able to control both forces, no gadget is going to safeguard you from the danger of your greed. ;)

I have a "gadget" but doesn't fit in my wallet. It's called self-control and it's inside me. My gadget is the knowledge of knowing what my limits and our goals are. And since DH and I have place a high degree of importance on our goals (i.e. comfortable retirement), paper folders aren't needed.

Most of the folks here are smart enough not to need one of those card-holders.

But just think how nice they'd keep them looking!

But we don't "buy" "credit" (i.e. debt) cards.

They are owned by the issuer - they just lend them to us.

They can take back their property, any time that they choose ... or refuse to let us use them any more.

They're in charge ... and don't you forget it!

Good wishes for increasingly shrewd use of your income and assets, everyone.

Amateurs! People like me who court debt don't need the physical credit card to get into trouble. I had no mortgage or car payment six years ago...now I'm back in debt and no longer smug. Paid off a 15 year mortgage in 11 years...now I have a 30 year at 5.85% to consolidate all my CC debt. Did it all without pulling out a physical credit card. I have not carried a credit card or a checkbook in years. I just pick up the phone and order with the numbers already on file.

I am getting back on track..but still having problems saying "NO" to my wants. Saving for my "needs" depressed me....now I am depressed and poor and I readily admit that depressed and financially secure is better.

Greed? Is shop-a-holism some sort of greed? Nobody sees what I buy. My car is from 1999. I live in a modest home. I work in a one-man office. Filled four Salvation Army bags last night. Must've been 16 outfits donated that I wore only once. I am realizing now that I've bought clothes for a life I do not lead.

I spend long hours at work and its difficult to find time to get out and shop. I don't need any gadgets to control my spending. I need more sleep.
