Newbie homeowner here: should I switch from wood-burning to gas?
Comments (1)First off, do one at a time, until you learn more about what's involved. Secondly, to answer your questions, it depends on what you objectives are. If you want to heat your house efficiently and don't mind the extra effort, then a wood stove or a wood burning insert may be the way to go. If you aren't trying to save money on the gas or oil bill, and just want the ambiance and an additional heat source than a gas insert may be the way to go. It takes time to split and stack wood, clean the wood stove daily, light fires, feed fires. My sister has a gas insert and it works well for her lifesytle. She's single, extremely busy with work and just likes to have a glass of wine in front of the fire at the end of the day. A gas fireplace insert worked out perfectly for her. It has blowers and heats up most of her house quite nicely. She's not saving any money on the gas bill, but that wasn't her objective. She got a jotul Katahdin BTW. For me, I have an old house and was concerned saving money on my heating bill, so a wood stove made more sense. I don't mind the additional work, but realize it's not for everyone. There are other options, like pellet stoves/inserts which can be a compromise. They have blowers too and a large storage bin which you put the pellets into. They feed the pellets automatically and have a thermostat. My neighbor (who is retired) has one and it heats up his house nicely. Pellets can be expensive if you don't buy at the right time of the year. Check out www.hearth.com for more info too. Good site. Comments (5)Everything said by akamaingrower is spot on except this: "I'm not sure what a fire starter pipe is, but if you mean a gas pipe, I'm pretty sure combining gas and wood burning in one fireplace would be a code violation, not to mention a very serious fire hazard." Gas starter pipes are the norm in most of the country; there's nothing illegal or hazardous about them. HOWEVER, you do need to make sure that the gas plumbing allows (heat can move back through the pipe if not plumbed properly) a simple switch to a starter pipe. You have a low-end pre-fab fireplace with a thin sheet metal firebox. You have a thinwall non-stainless air insulated chimney - these tend to rust the inner liner and cause problems. This will not be a good wood-burning fireplace. you can switch, but it's performance with wood won't be great. If you had a real masonry fireplace (with an appropriately high chimney) then the performance, safety, and durability would be much better; these are rarely installed by builders any more because the costs can be 10-50 times higher....See MoreConverting gas log to wood-burning
Comments (20)I had similar questions about my fireplace. We built 8 years ago and I paid the extra for the gas setup. Recently I wanted to use wood to help reduce heating costs. My fireplace is a Lennox unit with outside air supply and the blower setup. I figured that seeing as my house is open-concept the wood heat would work out well. I also wasnt sure what would need to be done to convert it. I wound up taking all my install paperwork to the company who installed it, as they are 5 minutes from my home. Their service manager talked with me and explained that I did in fact have a woodburning fireplace with a gas-log setup installed. He also told me that by code they have to install it with the proper chimney and tolerances for a wood fireplace. So all I had to do was remove the 'gas guts'. Ive been burning for a few months now and its SO nice:P Dave...See MoreConverting gas to wood burning??
Comments (2)You need to have the fireplace and chimney flue inspected and evaluated to determine if conversion to wood is possible. Code and safety requirements for solid fuels are different from those that apply to gas. Likewise with a gas starter. This is not DIY project. There are many variables, all of which involve important safety considerations not to mention your fire insurance....See Morechas045
