Help with fireplace design!

I would love any suggestions or opinions on remodeling my fireplace. We removed a railroad tie mantel and a lava rock stone front and now I don't know what to put back up. The fireplace has a raised hearth and the area to be recovered is 10 feet wide. The firebox is on the left and a place to store firewood is on the right. We are installing a Mendota full view insert and really won't be needed to store firewood.

We were thinking of going with a light colored stacked stone up to the mantel and drywall above. Now I am wondering if we shouldn't take the stone all the way up. Or, should we do something else besides stone? Would also love any suggestions on what to do with the old firewood box. Make it into shelves? Cover it up? Leave it as is? Another thought would be to panel the whole fireplace front and have one of the panels be a door to access the firewood box. I just am not sure what that would look like since the fireplace would be off center. HELP!!!

We now have windows on either side of the fireplace. On the left the windows are smaller to accommodate a build-in TV cabinet. There will be a window seat on the right side under the larger window.

I too am planning a lava rock removal fireplace remodel, so this caught my eye. I like the idea of stacked stone all the way to the ceiling. It may give some height with respect the bench and cabinet on either side. The wood box adds some character even if you don't use it for wood. Perhaps a statue or piece or art would look nice?

I agree with Canyonreid - woodbox does add character. What I wanted to mention is that your FP does not have to be centered. What I noticed was that your windows are not mirror images either - so the whole wall is an interesting visual balance now (shape & object balance).
Light stack-stone sounds lovely - and I would keep the firebox, and put something in it - statuary, a pot, an arrangement, seasonal decor, your dog-bed, deco firewood, whatever you like as a decorative element.

Hi! I just want to give an update in this post. We ended up almost redoing the fireplace. It turned out ok but not perfect. ♀️ We recently moved in and are still in the process of picking furniture. In these picture it is a mix of old and new furniture/art/accessories. So, I am now taking interior design advice. Have a photo picture frame such as this tree example on the wall to save shelf space. Have a decorative storage chest on the floor beside or where the purple couch is. Maybe even a coffee table with storage for the toys. Photos could be moved to the wall across from the window Adding more to the mantle area would If not for the two young boys and toys a horizontal waterfall may look good but it is not recommended in this case.

Thanks all. I wish I knew if there was a technical reason for it to be up so high. I'm in a 15 year old townhome, not the original owner, but the fireplace has been in that position since the house was built. There's technically another unit on the other side of the wall. I was hoping to come up with something that worked for the fireplace as is before I tear it down and see what's behind it, but I agree that I'd rather have it in the lower position.
