Tax question

We itemize our tax return. Normally it is simple - interest on mortgage, savings interest, etc. However, this year my husband had major dental surgery ( think $50,000)and I had eye surgery so we are going to itemize medical expenses. Hypothetically, if our joint income was $100,000 what kind of tax break/refund would we get - ball park figure, not including any other itemized items.

I'm not a professional, (just someone who enjoys figuring things out!) This was fun...sort of like trying to figure out a puzzle! And I'm sure someone out there probably has a much clearer answer..and please correct me if I'm going about my "computations" completely wrong!

But the nearest I can figure.........(and keep in mind, I dont think you've given near enough information to even ballpark guess the answer)....but to give you a start...medical expenses are deductible after you meet that 7.50 % threshold. So, using the $100,000.00 income figure and just the $50,000.00 expense figure (that's some EXPENSIVE dental surgery!!) there would be no deduction for the first $7500.00 worth of expenses, but the balance of $42,500.00 would be deductible. So, it seems like that would take your taxable income down from the $100,000 to $57,500.00. Not including any other deductions or exemptions. Tax liability on $57,500.00 is $7819.00. Aside from that, it would be easier to guesstimate your tax LIABILITY as opposed to a refund, since you didn't say how much you paid in taxes throughout the year, nor your filing status, which I'm assuming to be married/joint. (As for taxes paid in.....I'm guesstimating maybe $17,000.00 based on $100,000.00 income using the tax computation worksheet. Of course, that doesn't take into account the number of exemptions you might have claimed on your w-4)

What you have said is what i kind of thought would be the scenario. Yes, my husbands dental work was expensive - but he now has a wonderful smile and no dental problems anymore - it was worth every penny! The refund will come in handy as we have been laid off from work. Now I have been motivated to get our taxes done within the next couple of weeks. My guess is that this will prompt an audit from the IRS, which is fine - we have never had anything to hide - but still it makes me nervous!

Don't worry, Lydia. I'm not an accountant, either, but one prepares our taxes, and you are OK. My youngest graduated last year. She filed and got refunds, and we claimed her on our 1040, as we had done for the five kids who preceded her. College students rarely earn enough money to pay taxes. As an aside, with all the frauds going on nowadays, the IRS chased my dtr for $26.12 from taxes she prepared herself and filed while a student three years earlier! She had cashed in some bonds her grandma bought her when she was a baby to help pay for college, and she didn't figure the interest correctly. That was the only year our acc't didn't file for us. It's good to know they're diligent ar IRS, right? Sherry

I use Turbo Tax and it is fast enough for my purposes, but then, I alway buy a copy and install it on my computer. I never connect to the internet when I'm inputting tax data and fiddling with different scenarios. Also, I file by mail thus avoiding the electronic filing charge and any hacker that may be snooping my data stream. For backup records, I keep a paper copy and all the work sheets and the computer files. After I've filed, I will archive Turbo Tax and all its files and remove it from the computer. The main hassle I have is that the state code is not on the CD and must be downloaded from the web site. This takes forever over a dial-up connection. For those who have a high speed connection, this is not a concern.

In my area the property owners taxes lock upon reaching retirement age and the school district taxes are removed from the appraisal list when tallying the total tax due. I experienced a similar situation with my Grandmothers house. The county overvalued her older home due to square footage based on the sale price per square for homes in her area. What were once large tracts of farm/ranch land with farm houses out in the country 40 miles from Houston ended up becoming subdivided neighborhoods and what were once nice homes on smaller tracts of land became McMansions after bulldozing the original home. The property taxes quadrupled after her passing. I was forced to raise the rent so high on a tenant of 10+ years that they bailed. If we had a break in the taxation we could have kept the place in the family. Unfortunately we couldn't and had to sell. It was heartbreaking. What we found out was that the county undervalued the land and way overvalued the home. I'm not calling anyone here right or wrong. But, it would have been unfair to her new neighbors if I'd of kept MeMa's place at her taxes which were locked in in the mid 70's. Having said that, I can assure you that if I could have got the break I'd of taken full advantage of it regardless of how it affected everyone else. Yup, you will have to pay taxes on a prize if you win it. Read the fine print on the contest rules. Sometimes a winner can take a lump sum cash prize in lieu of the advertised prize if they offer that option. The cash prize is way less than the "value" of the advertised prize but at least you won't have to worry about shoddy workmanship and the taxes are way less on the cash prize than the inflated value of a remodeled kitchen. There has only been one winner who took the actual HGTV Dream Home. The rest all took the cash prize substitute. HGTV also has a team of legal advisors to fully inform the winner of all the legalities and liabilities when accepting the prize no matter what the choice. Smaller contests aren't so caring. With Oprah's car giveaway the winners found out they had to pay taxes on the autos and many claimed they could not afford the taxes. This was very bad PR. Oprah then coughed up cash to give to each winner to pay the taxes but that only INCREASED the winner's tax liability by increasing the amount they won. What the heck was she thinking???. I hope she fired her legal advisors. You don't have to be a JD to figure that one out. LOL. With those TV shows where they remodel a room or whole house they sign a contract. I never thought anyone every "won" a remodeling. They are only looking for certain types of homes and situations. Location is one of the biggest factors for appearing on the show, plus having enough room for camera equipment and what not, both inside and outside the house. Zoning laws and permits from the city for filming are also a factor in whether one is chosen or not. The money and items received may be defined as payment for being on the show. The cash and items gained through the arrangement are still taxable with the only difference being what line on the tax form is used to report the income.
