Travertine over red brick fireplace or is that sacrilege?

Ok-so bottom line-I have a really ugly old 70's red brick fireplace-it goes from floor to ceiling-the grout is thick and pretty dingy. We are trying to pull off some sort of tuscan look-by applying travertine to the front. We found some stacked looking travertine at the Tile Shop-looks like layers of stone-comes in weird puzzle piece installation (instead of the normal 12x12 like tile)Has anyone used this? I've never seen it anywhere before? Or used it? If you have-I'd love to see this pics. Or feel free to give me your experience with 1970's fireplace (or am I the only one with this problem? How did you make it better-does cleaning the grout help? White washing it perhaps? I'm stuck and can't proceed with any of the family room remodel until I resolve this. Thanks
