Hearth removal

We are thinking of redoing our traditional 1960s brick fireplace to give the room a more modern look. When finished, we wan the fireplace to be flush with the wall--minimalist in design--with no hearth.

A major part of this will be the removal of the brick hearth. It's about 8" high, 14" deep and 6' wide.

This brings me to my question: Can the hearth be simply removed (by breaking up the brick) or is it structurally part of the fireplace itself, perhaps hepling to anchor the fireplace?

Any thoughts on the removal of the hearth will be appreciated.
