Minimizing loud 2nd floor kitchen noise downstairs

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice to counteract a kitchen-floor noise problem.

One of the big problems I need to resolve in my kitchen remodel is to minimize the noise transfer from my second floor kitchen down to the bedroom directly underneath.

Right now, any noise from walking, cabinet doors, the trash compactor, dishwasher, or fridge is really magnified loudly down to the bedroom below. The existing kitchen has tiled floors over old vinyl with wood framing and wood subfloor between the 1st and 2nd story.

My current thought is to use cork for a new kitchen floor but that brings up some questions:

- In the past, I haven't run finished flooring underneath cabinets or appliances. If I use cork, should I use it underneath to take advantage of the sound insulating properties? I'm concerned the cork won't be dense enough to support the weights.

- Does anyone recommend additional floor insulating material either between the joists (would be difficult) or in the form of rubber mats such as (Rubber floor mat ) before laying down cork?

- Are there any other strategies?

Thanks!

bernie
