Gas / Pellet - Recommendations?
Comments (0)I am looking for a gas fireplace or pellet insert for our 275 sq' family room in VT. This room is always about 10 degrees colder than the rest of the house as it was built as an addition and the forced hot air into that room cannot be easily increased due to lack of access to the ductwork below. We would like to put in a heat source to supplement the forced hot air and at the same time have something that is attractive to look at. We were planning to put a mantle around it and a flat screen tv above. We have looked at the Quadrafire Castille pellet insert (30k BTUs)and really like the ability to control the heat and use renewable resources. It's relatively low cost to operate and seems like a good solution. That said... we really do not like the looks of the unit. It's a c.1803 antique home that we are putting it into and we would rather have it look more like a traditional fireplace. We do not like the fact that it protrudes into the room (can't they make one with a hopper that is flush??) and don't like the sort of plastic-y look of the unit. We also looked at a FireplaceXtrodinair clean face gas fireplace (36k BTU). With a firescreen in front of it, it looks pretty much like a regular fireplace. I hate the idea of the pilot burning gas when not using it but apparently you can run the pilot in intermittent mode and just turn it on when you want it. I am not sure how reliable this is though as it is a battery that provides the power for ignition. I am also not sure if it will provide the warmth that we want for that room and I think that it will cost a lot to operate. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions of other things to look at? A tradtional wood fireplace would not work due to the proximity of the location to the nearest wall of the main house... our chimney would have to be absurdly tall. Both the pellet and gas solutions would vent outside pretty well with a bumpout on the exterior wall....See MoreRealistic gas fireplace w/out too much depth
Comments (6)If it's space you are concerned about, look into the Slim Line Series by H & G. The SL-750TRS is a good unit and the output is very much the same as the 6000 (other than the 6000GLX). The differance is in depth (viewing area size is the same at 36"), the 750 is 16 1/4" and the 6000's are 21 1/2" deep. You gain a little more floor space with 750, and you still get your Ceramic Glass. The new TR version of the 750 offers a Clean Face conversion, and though they come standard with Acrylic Glass, you can also upgrade that to the Ceramic and add a Brick Kit to have a similar look as the TRS, just a little less heat (24,300 max BTU output vs. 30,000+ w/ 6000/750TRS)....See MoreInstalling gas log fireplace in a wood burning fp
Comments (2)First of all, there is a 30% tax credit (on parts and labor!) on better-quality inserts right now if you can get them in service (not just paid for) by Dec. 31. I suggest you see if you can get an insert job done; Maybe Uncle Sam will pay for the insert if you cover the labor. Now for your main question about doing it without an insert. I looked into this once and concluded that without an insert, gas log conversions from any type wood burning fireplace are mainly for ambience, not heat. The best I could come up with was, I learned that some RH Petersen logs with GF in the part number are designed to work with doors closed and thus keep the heat in the firebox instead of going up the flue. Maybe we could hear from someone with GF logs. There are also some other brands that advertise "reduced vent" logs, you might ask about those. In both cases I have my doubts about, even if it does produce heat, how much, and is it practical to get it to work with a thermostat....See Morecomposite deck / bleach mold cleaning recommendations negligent
Comments (10)Yo Ken, if your still around your up on this one. Far as Composites go I am with the Larry/whoever We are for the most part. Composites are really no longer using recycled material because there is just not enough of it so most of the raw stuff is virgin, the energy used to make composite is an enviro no no, when its time to remove the project composite is not real big on bio degrade its tricky to burn shreading it would be silly. Bottom line composites are not so enviro freindly. Info like that might suggest its not all that good to clean it either, with anything. I dont agree>> composites will out last Ipe, left to go silver/gray Ipe is as close to no maintance as a person can get. With the softer composites like Choice/MoistureShield even trex= tjunk I have found a coat or two of TWP 116 seals up the decking, locks in the color and keeps mold, mildew, stains from causing major problems. Of course not needing to do this is the reason the Wallet goes for composite in the first place. I my own self dont like composites at all for the reasons stated in several posts here and on other sites. Welcome aboard Larry!!! Sorry I dident understand your intent at the begining . John...See Moretbeetz
