Garage Storage Gurus: 24', 30', or 36' workbench depth????
Comments (3)my workbench is 36", and it is a hassle at times to reach tools hanging onthe back wall. originally it was a workbench at our office and had a shelf on the back which is why it is so deep. i have a 24"x6' table in the workshop and it is too narrow for many things. i got my wife a storage cabinet for the laundry room that has a 30" top on it, and it seems just about right to me. if you have a couple saw horse that can approximate the finished height, lay a 4x8 sheet of plwood on them. have soemone hold a board at each mark and see what it feels like to you. if you are like me, the 30" will be just right. then use the 18" left over to make shelves or doors for it!...See MoreThe best laid plans of mice and men . . .
Comments (15)Since my DH's first wife died in October 2003, through our marriage in 2006 and even today, DH has piddled with getting rid of his stash of tools up north. Now he is getting down to business, and has made inroads--because I told him I was through waiting on him to get his house ready to sell, and I would NOT go up there any more. So I am surprised and mostly pleased by his activity in that direction. He is an engineer with a tool for every purpose. He also confiscated my PERSONAL tools here in Mobile, and I found them among his out in his garden shed. THAT was a nono, and I started bringing them back. Some of those I kept in a Snoopy yellow plastic lunch box for 30 years, and I depend on them being available quickly when I need a screwdriver or a Vicegrip or a small drill bit. I miss the Snoopy tool box. I think his first wife must have left all tool-associated chores to him, and he does not quite know how to deal with my very independent take-hold do-it-myself history. Heck, when I tore out the bathroom, he should have known I did not wait for anyone to do what I could do for myself! Southern woman I am, but not the helpless variety. More like Steel Magnolia! (one of my favorite movies) So pleased that MamaGoose is on board these days, and Jay, and now that the fall is almost upon us again, maybe there will be a surge of activity on the forum. I really look forward to catching up with what's been going on while I was out gardening for about 4 months. Sometimes we all need to take a break to come back refreshed....See MoreWhy have garage sales changed?
Comments (39)Many people I know put their stuff on CL or Freecycle community boards now. Less hassle than setting up a garage sale and sitting all day in your driveway. Small things are either put in a "Free" box on a curb or hauled off to Goodwill. There are a couple of high income enclaves near me that hold annual community sales. Those neighborhood sales have been dwindling over the past 3 or 4 years. Last summer I drove through one of them, and it was mostly pots-n-pans, children's toys and clothes. Very little furniture or other substantial stuff compared to 5 yrs ago. Fewer households participating as well. There's also a low income neighborhood close by. They don't hold community sales, but the residents often have garage sales in summer. I guess the poorer folks try to squeeze some cash out of their stuff. I never go there because it's mostly junk....See MoreWhat do you do with all the stuff you use but not often in garage?
Comments (24)I have this fantasy of installing a bookcase / shelves next to a doorway or opening, but placing them 3" or 4" away from the wall. And then slide big flat things BEHIND the shelves (that's why "next to a door," so there's room to slide them out). And maybe install ledges on the back side of those shelves to hold those flat things up off the ground, or maybe make it possible to store one of them higher up (double-deck). What made me think of that was this item from your list: 2 folding tables (when guests come over) Set some deep shelves (as deep as the folding chairs are wide) by the door to the house (if there is one, or any other door) far enough out from the wall to fit those tables, and then install one ledge low down on the back side of the shelves so you can slide one table in to rest on it, and another ledge above it to set the 2nd table on. You could install those big utility hooks I linked to above, or a 7" ladder hook, on the end of that bookcase to hang the 6 folding chairs on, some low and some high. I don't know how many folding chairs would fit in the 7" depth, but it would be one way to keep them from falling over, etc. And they'd be close by the door and easy to use. Not sure if all 6 would fit; you'd probably need 3 hooks, and I don't know how easy it would be to maneuver chairs off the top hook (Most are 38" high--so if you put the lowest set of hooks so the support is about 39 inches above the floor (not to lift so much as to keep them from falling over) and the next set 39" above that, then thelegs of the top set of chairs would be 78"/6.5' from the floor, so most people would be reaching over their head to get them--not so smart from a safety point of view, probably. If there are stairs, you could reach them more easily, maybe. Or experiment with hanging them upside down from the cross-brace, and that might let you control them better when taking them off. EDITED TO ADD: I just looked it up, and most steel folding chairs are 2" thick when folded, so 3 would fit on each hook. Here's a 7" ladder hook. Not so good for bikes because it doesn't have much of a front "lip" the way the one above does. But probably easier to get the chairs off it. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-5-16-in-x-7-3-4-in-Screw-In-Ladder-Hook-01219/202305568...See Morededtired
