Pet Loss: How Many Times?

We're having a sad night tonight. One of my DDs parakeets passed away. She's a shy girl and her pets are so important to her sense of self.

We're also in the process of losing one of our cats. He's a former stray tomcat we trapped, neutered and semi-tamed when we lived in the city. He's been happy as a clam in his big suburban yard with his buddy, his woodpile, and a sunny garage roof to perch on, watching the neighborhood go by.Now his days are numbered, and I know I should think about the good safe days he had that he wouldn't have had on the streets, but I'm just sad.

Two years ago January, I lost the 7th dog of my lifetime and it really seems to have been the straw that broke the camel's back. I am so unwilling to go through the loss again, I don't feel like ever getting another dog. Or parakeet. Or hermit crab.

We still have three dogs, and two are seniors. :(

Anyone else get to this point?
