Mac, you wanted it because they are spectacular when they bloom. There is a backyard on the Paradise Valley Parkway that has 3 huge ones. The bloom is amazing. I do find, as nc-crn mentions, that deep watering can make the difference. I have 6 plants that all take quite a bit of water so I turn the hose on real low and leave it on the plant for a minimum of 24 hours, then it's moved to the next for the same treatment. Sometimes I forget to move the hose but they are basically watered once a week or so and mine has done well on this routine. Across the street is one on irrigation, the schedule in summer is water every 2 weeks, but it's deep. That one grows and blooms.

You are in luck as that is not Hoya pubicalyx. I would say Hoya cinnamomifolia or Hoya pupureo-fusca. Both are similar with the flower colour being the only real difference. I think your Hoyas should do well there as a partly shaded South facing window is just about perfect as long as you can keep the plants close to the glass. Is there an overhead light as well? Maybe you could use an energy efficient light bulb and just have that one for a few hours each day to supplement the natural light. Mike

I'm sort of frustrated - and sad. My most recent post, two years ago ... has only moved down to eleventh location, on page one. Hey, folks! Learning how money works is an interesting hobby! And it PAYS WELL! (Taxes, too!). Having celebrated my 96th birthday a couple of weeks ago, and broken my 12 or so year old car beyond repair more than 3 years ago, when, requiring a driver test, I did not replace it, my friends advised moving from my old step-uncle's farmhouse which, following his death 20 years ago, I'd moved from a 2 bedroom townhouse in the city costing over $750./mo. , renting from the new owner at $450./mo. Rent had increased over those years to $675./mo., and I'd have to pay triple that for an apt. In the city, but, though I could afford it, I like it here. I'm thankful to have health to hitchhike to the village, near to the farm where I grew up, and the city about 12 miles away and this is my third winter here without a car.. Son moved in over a year ago, rent has increased to over $1,000./mo., moving to town would cost well over double that, so figure that if getting a car would allow us to continue living here for 6 mos. to a year or two - that would pay for the car. I'm thankful that I could afford to live in the city for 10 - 15 years or so at least - and when you're starting from 96, that seems like a reasonable timeframe. In case someone searches for this in the future, thought would share my experience. I was inspired by this to try the 50% Medium Brown / 50% Weathered Oak on my red oak for entire first floor, stairwell and second floor hall, and while liked it overall, it was much darker than katiejean's pictures would suggest. Of course, all wood is different but I also think those shots are overexposed based on the lighting I see elsewhere in the photos. The color for me was closer in darkness to Diana c's picture and actually VERY close to Golden Brown (which I also liked and had done for my bedroom in the past). In the end, wanted a bit lighter for such a large space and went with Early American which actually has similar undertones (both are warm). I expected the 50/50 blend to do more to stop red undertones of red oak and Early American to accentuate it, but honestly didn't see much difference in that regard. Just difference in darkness and how much the grain popped (50/50 made grain stand out more). Early American was a light to medium brown with red/warm undertones while the 50/50 was a medium to dark brown with red/warm undertones. Again, liked them both (they were my top 2) but just depends on your darkness preference for the space. Below are samples on stair treads that were the same (old) red old that had to be replaced. Left to right: Early American, 50/50 Special Walnut & Dark Walnut, Golden Brown 50/50 Medium Brown & Weathered Oak, English Chestnut, and Provincial. 50/50 Special Walnut and dark walnut was waaaay darker than expected. English Chestnut and Provincial were okay, but lacked any warmth and almost seemed grayed out. Provincial seemed similar in darkness to Early American but again, lacking warmth (some may prefer that "cooler" tone). In any event, hope the above and attached pic helps someone in the future!
