Webcam/security cam in the garden?
Comments (54)Web cams are actually quite inexpensive these days. You could try a really cheap one like this: http://www.amazon.com/Webcam-Camera-Vision-Meeting-compatible/dp/B0015TJNEY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1327376047&sr=8-2 But with a really cheap model the picture may not be good enough to identify the thief. You'd probably have better results with a little higher resolution model like a 720p or 1080p: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-960-000585-HD-Webcam-C310/dp/B003LVZO8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327376047&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-HD-Pro-Webcam-C910/dp/B003M2YT96/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1327376047&sr=8-3 If you already have a digital camera you should be able to hook that up as well. You would have to connect the camera to your computer with a USB cable and have the computer running software that will take pictures every 5 seconds. Point the camera out a window at your front garden. My camera came with software that will do this. Sometimes people use this type of software to make time lapse movies of plants growing or flowers opening. Taking time lapse photos rather than movies or eat up less space on your hard drive. Comments (40)Sherry, it's good to know that about Bluff oak. If they're slow growing, then there would be no reason to choose them over White oak. I still really recommend Swamp Chestnut oak though. At three years mine is 10ft tall. Pam, longleaf pines can have some aggressive roots because they like to grow deep into the soil. In nature they have a taproot 6-10ft long. Just make sure you're not buying too large a tree in too small of a container. Before you buy, slip the container off and look for any large circling roots. If you see circling roots, pass it up and look for a smaller one. I prefer the smaller ones in the grass stage myself because they have the advantage of being able to put more roots down before height growth. We're really only talking a year or so difference in time....See MoreDriveway gate and doorbell?
Comments (23)Yes you need a doorbell at the front door still. I've lived with gates. They don't always stay closed, you could leave it open expecting 10 friends to come over, you could decide to remove the gate or never close it in the future... Most people don't feel comfortable just walking in someone elses house, so you'll buzz them in the gate and they'll still want you to open the door for them. You could be in the basement or bathroom and not hear a knock etc...See MoreSecurity cams for house under construction
Comments (14)I am SO not an expert on this. But it always occurs to me, what good do the cameras really do? What good will it do you, if they eventually capture your thief, and years later get a conviction? You're never going to get your stuff back. I like cameras, because if they catch an employee disappearing with something, someone could be held responsible, but for random thieves.... maybe it works as a deterrent? But in that case, a high fence, signs about guard dogs and security services might help. Perhaps, pay for a patrolling security service....See Moreyosemitebill
