Trane XB16 vs XV95 vs other?
Comments (2)Thanks for the reply. Is there a reason the XV95 is the one to go with? I may not be able to do the insulation (which is what makes it qualify for the rebate) because of electrical upgrade that is needed in the attic and electrician said basically all my electrical needs to be redone before I put any more insulation. I still have original knob and tube in the attic that needs to go. I can't do both the electrical and the AC/furnace at the same time. So if no rebate, I can look at other models as well. Yes the furnace is in the basement and vented through an exterior wall. He said the ductwork look good - I don't know how old it is. I attached a picture. He didn't say anything about the condenser or a lineset (is that the refrigerant line?). If the lineset is for the refrigerant, I'm pretty sure they are replacing it because that is what is wrong with the current one. It's leaking refrigerant and it's not an obvious leak so he offered that I could replace just the coil or the unit. It's got the R22. I figured it was better to get a newer unit than exchange the coil....See MoreTrane XR16 vs Trane XL16i price difference.
Comments (4)Similar condensing units. I always ask the price difference. The major difference between the two are the proprietary top and the extra 2 yr warranty on the compressor you get on the XLi series. Make certain you get a true two stage thermostat for the XV95 furnace. Anything less defeats the purpose as you will always go to high stage heat whether needed or not. A furnace set up on a timer or a thermostat that uses a software algorithm is simply not acceptable. Plus depending on location, I would want independent dehumidify on demand set up for AC cooling. Comments (8)If you haven't used it on something else yet, both systems qualify for the $1500 federal tax credit which is nice. The 16 seer system gives you a higher seer rating (17.55 as compared to 15.00)which helps during summer months. The HSPF rating is 8.8 as compared to 8.5. BUT - the 14 seer unit gives you a higher heating capacity so less time you'd be using the electric heat strip. Being in upstate NY - I would think you would be more worried about heating than cooling. Typically - the 16 seer system would be a more costly system so it sounds like you may be able to 'make a deal' with the 14 seer system. Ask them for a free humidifier or something of that nature....See MoreTrane vs. Lennox vs. Carrier
Comments (28)There's much more to this equation than just what you may or may not save on utilities. A lot of this depends on your location and your local weather. How much you save on energy costs depends on a variety of factors like how much you are paying for electricity and how much you use your AC system during the summer. Some locations, such as mine (Katy, Texas area) can benefit by having a more energy efficient model. The devil is in the details of anything you choose. These details come down to proper sizing, humidity control, quieter operation, staging, manufacture support like warranty terms, installing contractor ability to repair if / when system breaks down. In my area it's not uncommon for payback of such systems to take 10-15 years. This also depends on what the new system is replacing, depends on use of the equipment etc. The other effect of all this is also feeling more comfortable in your home. A two or more staged system when sized and installed properly can be the best of both worlds. Another analogy is when you buy a car, you may buy it only for the gas mileage. But after you take a long trip in it you may wind up saying I wish I would have bought a more comfortable vehicle, my back is killing me and I have a cramp in my leg. Typically the only reason you buy a new (complete) HVAC system is the current one isn't providing you the comfort you want. Certainly changing a few parts or one piece of the system may get you down the road... but if you're planning on staying in your home... well this ramble just gives you a few more things to think about....See Morerathernot_noemail_com
