How do you prep windows for a huricane?

Hubby and I are moving to a new house and also in an area that is prone to more hurricanes. Where we live now, our house is really well protected and we don't get that many hurricanes off shore in New England.

Anyway, I know that if the hurricane is coming, you're supposed to put plywood over the windows. My questions are:

1: How do you put it up? Long screws?

2: What do you do when you remove it? I would imagine you would have a hole in the house now, that you really need to fill in. Do you put a wood filler or caulk in it?

3: Is there any way to make a hole that you could use all the time? One that would be water proof and wouldn't become too stripped? Because even if we seal up the holes, I'd imagine that after a few years of hurricane prep, I'd end up with a lot of little filled in holes.

Any suggestions? What we're hoping to do is to buy and prep some wood, in advance, so that we won't have to go running to the hardware store the moment they predict a hurricane. I'd rather have the stuff we need.

The screw holes are a penalty for the protection of the plywood.

When a hurricane comes, you won't care how many little filled holes you have. We don't have that many hurricanes that I'm aware of. Why not put a cork in each hole and paint it the same color as your house?

My hurricane plywood protectors are put up with very large screws - rarely used - we stack them against a wall in the garage just in case. My house is brick and you can't see the holes the screws go in.

Hi transplant, I think you may be confusing mulch and compost. Mulch is a substance, organic or inorganic, that lies on top of the soil and whose main purposes are to regulate the soil temp, preserve moisture and help prevent weed growth. In your case, the rocks are your mulch. As far as feeding your plants, I'm just going to speak in broad generalizations here. Many xeriscape plants don't like rich soils or a lot of fertilizer; however a light feeding of most of them once a year is usually a good thing. Don't use a fertilizer high in nitrogen at this time of the year - nitrogen stimulates green growth. I use a liquid, organic formula that can be either sprayed on foliage or poured onto the soil. This works well for rock mulched beds. Again, this is just a generalization and you might want to do some research about the individual needs of your plants. Hope this helps.

Last year, there was Ecoli episode in CA and the culprit were wild pigs which has visited the spinach patch. The interesting thing was that the ecoli was not on the spinach it was inside the spinach. The pigs contaminated the soil and the water was as absorbed by the spinach roots and the bacteria was inside the leaves.. So no amount of surface rinsing would have removed or killed the Ecoli. Thankfully, it was a small episode that was quickly contained. The triple washed baby spinach salad bags were quickly pulled from the shelves. Since I first posted, we just finished the countertop and sink install. I have hole for 1 soap dispenser at the sink and plan to keep a spray bottle of alcohol or bleach solution for disinfecting. I have the same sink as cottonpenny and plan to use the sink bowl as the rinse bowl after a cleaning disinfecting routine.

Assuming all one countertop with prep and cleanup, If you can have a change in countertop surface, that would make a demarcation between the two--a butcherblock area for the prep perhaps? or a marble inset in a laminate countertop? or a height change? or a color change? or a pull-out breadboard for prep? Simplest solution: use a removable plastic dishpan or two. Fill with dirty dishes, then set elsewhere. On a chair? In the next room? On the floor? You can move them back into position once you're ready to add water and work with them, and without handling the dirty dishes twice before washing. Meanwhile, they're away from that sink that you just scrubbed out so it could receive the veg, or whatever. --Florantha, who lived in an 8 x 10 corridor kitchen for 40 years. P.S. I understand the need to get this pile out of the sink and drainer before you begin another task. _Visually_ it's important to me--less line-of-sight distraction while I'm thinking about that next task. And with a two-basin sink, I was able to keep sudsy water on one side of sink while the veg was soaking in the other side so that used items went into the dishwater immediately. I also liked putting the cleaned fresh veg into bowls or such so that the countertop was not a cleanliness issue, preventing a second rinsing. If someone needed to dump the dregs of a coffee cup or whatever, they could just wait OR just dump it into the compost bin OR walk elsewhere to dump. I was at the throne.

I am a diy housepainter, and what I've done with the high ceiling is to paint everything up to where I can reach with my ladder (and I certainly don't put my ladder on stairs). By the time I'm done, there's just the high walls and the ceiling, which covers our large-ish living room and the stairs. I had a crew sent by a professional contractor come just to spray the high ceiling and the walls of the stairway at the top. I used the same color as the wall paint, same eggshell sheen, and I provided the paint. In my HCOL area, it was, as I recall, $500, and this is a 22' ceiling with wide staircase (2 guys, 1 day), which looks much bigger than yours. In the interests of safety, I would explore options like this. It is easy to test your existing paint to see if it is oil-based or latex. You can google it. If it's oil-based, you'll do an extra step or two, but it's not hard. Another thing to note is that you can do a LOT of prep work in advance of the painting day. You can sand, spackle, and especially tape off the trim, unscrew and prepare the switch plates and vents and light fixtures. You can peek at some diy videos for how-to best prepare. I'd buy a couple canvas tarps, and some of that paper on rolls to cover the walkways to protect your floors. And lots of painters tape, primer, and good quality paint.

Before you premake plywood pieces you need to find a suitable place to store them flat so that they do not warp.

A visit to any big box store in hurricane areas will give you several methods for attachment, some more aesthetically pleasing than others.

I second the advice to simply get shutters or a panel system installed. They are not overly expensive and many are quite easy to put up and take down. I had a panel system installed and as an older lady I was well able to put them up alone.

If you are new to hurricane areas it is the putting up and taking down that is the kink in the plan and the part that you have to do over and over and over each time a storm is forcast. Finding a way to make it easy is key- if it is too difficult you will skip it when you are not certain that you will get a direct hit and you will wait too long to begin. If you lack or misplaced parts everything grinds to a halt.

An easy system makes it a very simple task to protect your home.
It is an investment that will serve you for the entire time you own your home and again, not that expensive.

I've lived in FL all my life, and plywood is pretty much the protection of last resort.

If you can possibly afford it, get some kind of shutters. If money is really tight, they make a special fabric panel now that is supposed to be adequate and you can fold it up when not in use. You'd just have the pegs to hook it onto permanently installed. The plus of this is it's very inexpensive (can get at big box stores) and you can just fold up the panels and stick them in a closet someplace. The minus is that they're so new they haven't really been tested in actual storms much.

If you are in an area with a HOA they may have requirements as to what kind of shutters you can use.

If you're in a hurricane zone, if you go to the website of your local paper or even your county's website, they usually have a list of the various types of protection available, from plywood to impact windows, and the pluses and minuses of each, along with a rough estimate of the cost.

Shutters sounds like a good idea. I'll bet they are a little pricey though.
Most wood windows have a stop on the outside, that is a surface that would be for a storm panel or storm window of sorts. This pc. of molding is called the blind stop, as in window blind or shutter. I'd sit the custom cut plywood panel against that stop and instead of holes I'd drill & set in screw-type inserts in exterior caulk.
