Newbie: Starter Embroidery Machine?

My wife would like a Embroidery machine however she does not want to spend a lot and I would like your suggestions on what cheap starter system should she start with?

Also down the road if affordable it would be nice since I am a computer nut if I could use my computer to make designs for her.

I have a Brother PE150 which I bought on ebay. It is a good little machine to start out with and not too expensive. To digitize your own designs you need a program like Embird. It is one of the less expensive and comes in parts so you don't have to buy the whole thing at once.

Thanks... My wife has looked at the Brother SE270D from Walmart.com and I was wondering what the Pros and Cons are? plus you need to buy the Brother PED-Basic Embroidery Software can it work with Embird as well?

She is not sure if she will want to do Embroidery or not... she does Cakes for fun http://www.nsnd.com/cakes/ and she does sew more lately. I bought her a serger just recently and she is using it to make some stuff...

I wish I could help her and make money doing it... (grin)

I own a Babylock Ellageo, so I am biased toward babylock. I know that the Ellure is an excellent machine-- both as and embroidery machine and a sewing machine. The babylock is made by brother as are some of the berninas. You need to look at your budget and decide what you want for the money you have. Any of the machines you list are wonderful machines-- as long as they do what you want them to do.

I am also new to the site, but I went to the Sewing Expo in Atlanta recently. The prices for embroidery machines range from $800 to $10,000+. I was able to learn quite a bit about the Brother Innov-is 1500D which retails around $1500. This machine seems like a great entry-level machine. They have machines that are less expensive, but they are slower and have less options. Other brands I've been researching are Baby Lock and Bernina. Depending in where you live, there may be the same kind of show coming to your area. The $10 I spent to get my feet wet was well worth it. Most larger quilt shops have embroidery machines that you can learn about, but most seem to only carry one or two specific brands. I hope this helped some. i bought my machine when they first came out and have been intimidated by it. I have taken lessons twice and am having no luck, kept going back to a cheap machine. now I want to learn. I took a class on threading it and the bobbin then got busy canning and garden and today I tried again. I can not even get it threaded. it makes me feel so dump. I wan wanting to get the quilting frame that they are coming out with, but now am afraid that I won't be able to keep this machine running. I have tried to read the manuel and they told me that there were videos on line but I can't find them.

You will also need machine embroidery thread...a few spools in various colors and a spool of bobbin thread (can't use regular sewing thread) to start practicing with is a good option to use while you are practiceng learning the machine using the manual page by painful page. Don't skip the reading as there is valuable information in the manual that will pay off later and not leave you frustrated. The manual will read like mud the first time through, better the second time, and start practicing the third time. Tearaway stabiilizer is good to start with and walmart has that at less than a dollar a yard. The pre-packaged is expensive way to purchase. Embroidery machine needles...schmetz, organ, and singer are good options, size 11 and 14. Have a few spares to start with. Later down the line you may want a reader-writer box to download free and purchased designs on line...works like an external floppy disk drive to transfer the design to the machine so the machine can sew the design out. Your machine requires a box and pre-programmed card or purchased cards which can get expensive.

I started with the Brother PE150 and love it. I have felt no need to upgrade yet, although there have been times I wished I had a larger embroidery field. But, mostly, it's been great. I do use Embird with it, but it's not necessary - at least at first. She can buy plenty of designs ready to go that will give her many options and let her know whether this is something she wants to pursue further.
