oh dear! skunk under cement pool area
Comments (3)There is another problem. Most female skunks have their babies in May and June, so she may have a litter under there. If so, she may dig another entry to get back to them. If you watched/waited until she left at night (they're mostly nocturnal), could you look under there with a strong flashlight and see if she does have youngsters there? You could also call your local Fish and Wildlife (or Fish and Game) Dept (look under State Dept of.... in the front part of your phone book) and ask for advice. They may even take care of it for you. But if you go the trapping route, be sure to get a SHORT (height) trap. I've heard that skunks really hate to get their own spray on themselves, and they can't spray very well unless they can raise their tail. Approach the trap holding a piece of decently heavy clear plastic in front of you (4 or 6 mil is good), and then lower the plastic over the trap. Be sure to have a complete plan in place, and have an open pickup truck to put the trap/skunk in (still covered with plastic). I've heard that most people who have dogs don't have skunks. True or false, I don't know. Solve all your skunk-entry problems immediately after you solve your current skunk problem. As you can see, trying to fix it with a skunk in the middle of it isn't easy. Comments (87)I so wish the local animal control, or fish and game would come take care of the skunk I accidentally caught in my life trap (intended for cats that kill the yard birds). Anyway, I called local, state, fed. and they all said the same, "good luck." So this poor skunk is slowly starving/choking to death, because I'm cowardly and don't want to get sprayed or have the front yard stink for a month...so I have to find a way to deal with this! If the law, which I doubt, says I can't "relocate", then I'm left with killing the poor thing! This is going to haunt me in my nightmares! As for Kimmsr and her "well written" and well-researched input: state laws vary widely, it's best to call and find out if they'll help you before doing anything! If your state, like mine, won't help, here is a Youtube video that I think is the most humane I've seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9F16vTJXbk...See Moreskunk living under shed
Comments (6)I had a resident skunk in the old house. There was a burrow under my shed but when I followed the skunk a few times, it usually went into the neighbors' yards and disappeared. We ended up with a fairly amicable relationship. Since they are nocturnal, I just made sure that I made plenty of noise when taking out the trash after twilight. There was some smell on hot evenings when he was wandering around the yard but I never felt that I had to do something about getting rid of him. Her. Whatever. However, the neighbors used their patio in the evening and were sometimes bothered about the smell (or perhaps feared that a crazed skunk would coming running at them to hose them down a bit). In general, if you leave them alone, they'll mind their own business and will help rid your yard of slugs, crickets (to me, a bigger nighttime annoyance) and other bugs. You can try pouring Lysol or something into the entrance, keeping in mind that this will contaminate the soil. Blocking the entrance may work but be sure that he's not in there when you do that and don't do it when there are babies! Pouring water in there will make his nest uncomfortable but, again, make sure he's not home at the time :) If you must relocated it, it's probably best to call a professional pest control company....See MoreHelp for front of house
Comments (14)awm03 - We do not need the porch and only wanted to "improve the design." We have a large two tier deck on the back side of the house with a brick courtyard - we live on a corner lot so the breezeway and garage is on the side which makes the deck and courtyard very private. I actually like the look of the railing and it seems to finish it off. I can't thank you enough for helping me visualize this. We actually have just finished a reno on this home. We added 12 feet to the left side and added the second floor on that side that houses the master bedroom and master bath. There are two dormers on that side and one has the master closet and the other has the laundry room. It was a long project and over a year of living in a 28-ft trailer in the backyard and not to mention it was one of the coldest winters on record in Boston!! Again, thank you for all your ideas and the design work....See Moremskey12
