tv/dvr/vcr/digital converter making me crazy

I guess you could say I'm old school. I LOVE my VCR, but its impossible to buy just a VCR anymore. I have 2.

The one I use the most is a panasonic, and has done great for several years. Recently, I went through a bunch of old VHS tapes, before getting rid of them. Maybe I wore the thing out.

I taped a show last night and when I went to watch it, it was mostly blue screen. The only way the show showed up is when I would press Fast Forward. Can't really get the gist of the show on FF. haha
I've tried different tapes on different VCR machines on different TVs with different remotes and have deduced that its a defect in the VCR. I've cleaned the heads several times, but it doesn't help.
I also have a DVR, but am not smart enough to tape on the danged thing. I think having to use this digital converter box on my old TVs messes up taping through the DVR.

Anyhow...........any ideas what else I might try to get this VCR taping correctly? I just get bluescreen on the recorded TV show, unless I press FF, then I get a picture.

I'm ready to scream.
Any help on this?

You have only one tape? Try another tape in your VCR. Try your tape in another VCR. People offering VCR repair are now few and far between. Parts for VCRs are difficult to find. I bought 12 from thrift stores for $5 to $10 each. Every one of them worked after head cleaning. JVC are difficult to repair. Panasonic are easier to repair and parts are more available.

I think it's time to stop being afraid of the DVR and learn how to use it. Pull out the manual. If you've lost the manual, look at the manufacturer's website--most have the manuals available there.

There's probably instructions labeled "Quick Setup" or something like that, which will give you easy instructions and diagrams on how to hook the DVR up and how to record shows.

There are different ways to connect the DVR, the cable box and the TV. You may have to experiment with a couple to find the configuration that works with the equipment you've got.

Your cable company might be able to send someone out to hook up the DVR and show you how to record on it, for a fee. There might also be a store with a "help crew" that would be willing to send someone out to your house to set things straight. Or a neighborhood teenager who can set your system up for you.

Or just get a new VCR. They still sell them.

Okay. But I think it needs an exorcism. :) Seriously though, when it does it again, I'll check out the buttons more closely. I just can't stand this new digital changeover. It keeps me so busy with remotes that I probably use up a fair number of calories a day, just reaching for different remotes, turning the volume up or down for each different channel, looking for all the remotes, throwing the remotes, etc., etc.

I need help. I bought a new 42 inch screen Magnavox HD TV set. We are a member of the Direct TV Satellite Cable Network. The dish is outside of the house with a coaxil cable entering the home to a black box that sits beside the TV. A coaxil cable leaves the black box to a Power Surge Protector Electrical strip. Another coaxil cable leaves this connection to the TV back input area. The TV channels, volume, etc are controlled by the handheld Dish Remote Control. The Magnovox TV remote is not used. I have a Symphonic DVD Player and the red, white, yellow wire set and its own remote control. I have an Emerson VCR with a coaxil connector wire and its own remote controller. I do not know where to connect the VCR coaxil wire to the TV. The TV set has overall, 3 sites for the colored wire connection ports. (1) an area on the left side near the back of the screen for the yellow,red,white connection, and 2 separate areas called line 1 and line 2 connections (but a double set of plugs of red, white and yellow colored ports in this assembly)which is very confusing. Which row do I use? Goal: I want to know how to connect the VCR and the DVD. They are to be used separately. Do I hook up these 2 separately at the varied colored port areas, and they run independently with their remotes? Do I connect to the black box? Do I run the DVD through the back out hook-up of colored ports to the colored inports at the VCR front area and connect to the TV via a coaxil somehow?....Is the black box involved or bypassed? Please keep the insructions simple. The 3 sets of appliance directions are too confusing. I am having trouble with each appliance and the individual directions are not helpful to me with the currently used Direct TV Dish system. Thank you in advance.

Is the 'channel 10' that you are trying to record an analog or digital signal? If analog, then you probably need to turn the converter OFF, so that the 'analog pass through' feature is enabled. Then tune your VCR to channel 10. (If you want to also watch the broadcast, your TV would need to be tuned to either channel 10 or channel 3 - depending on the specifics of your VCR.) If digital, then yes, your VCR would need to be on channel 3 (as does your TV.) If you are recording a digital signal though, you will get better audio and video quality by using the A/V connections from the converter box to the VCR. And same between the VCR and the TV set. I wonder if the reason you couldn't get the A/V connections to work was because some menu option in either the VCR or TV was not set to the correct input? What you might consider is to connect the VCR to the TV using the A/V cables. Period. Then use the TV tuner in the VCR for all the analog tuning for the next 2.5 months. (When watching/recording digital, you would turn the converter box on and set the VCR to channel 3.) After that, just use the A/V cables between the converter box and the VCR. This gets rid of all the 'channel 3' stuff and gives the best quality possible.

I requested my coupons and received them. During the 90 days that I had them, our WM only rec'd 30 boxes. They claim it was due to a shortage from manufacturers. I was told by one employee that another employee purchased 4 of 5 boxes that came in and was unloaded overnight. I repeatedly called the store and was told that they were on back order and they didn't know when they would recieve any more and just keep calling...blahblahblah. On the day the coupons expired I found a walmart 25 mi away that had 30 boxes but had to work 25 mi away in the other direction, so... my coupons expired. I emailed the gov. and told them that there were 10,000 residents in this town, not including the college students, and 30 boxes in 3 mo. just didn't get it, and could they reissue the coupons. Of course that was 3 weeks ago, and no reply. We broke down and bought a new tv, plasma, but the 780 pixels or whatever it was, not the newest gsdget, being told by NFM that it was ready for the change, (we have the rooftop antanae). Guess what... The "test" showed that it would not recieve the digital signal... back to square one...I am getting to the point that the internet tv would be worth trying....

Thanks Busdriver and camian. I finally found a different VCR and it works. So I think the other one is kaput. I might try to learn to tape on disc with my DVR. Its just so inconvenient. The remote itself is about 13" long and very un-ergonomic.
As far as the DVR.......the instruction book is about 1/2" thick. Just too much for me to comprehend.
So, for now, I'll limp along with any VCR I can get working. It is a pain to get used to a different remote. Wish someone could invent a sensible remote, and then require all of them to be the same.
