Citrus heaven - on my doorstep!

I came home from work this afternoon and there was a box on my doorstep. It contained 16 beautiful lemons and a half dozen grapefruit! The windchill feels like it's 35 below so I rushed it indoors and opened it. The fruit was quite cold/hard so I put it in tepid water, treating it as if it has frostbite. I just checked it and I think it will be fine.

This is perfect timing!!! I've been sick for 2 days with a fever and today a killer sore throat is coming on. I'm going to juice some of them and take some to work tomorrow with a jar of honey.

Thank you again Karen for the extra fresh citrus fruit from Florida!!

Lovely gift and glad it survived the frigid temps! From one generous forum member to another!

(However, methinks maybe you should not be going to work if you have a fever and sore throat! Might get everyone sick.)

Linda - everyone else at work already had it and made me sick! The whole 9th floor has been sick over the last month. I'm not coughing or sneezing and after gargling with hot salt water all day my throat is feeling better. But I will decide in the morning. And -35 windchill temps might influence me a tiny bit! :-)

I'm going to make preserved lemons with some of the lemons. This is the perfect time of year for a spicy Moroccan stew with tasty preserved lemons!

I don't believe I have been taking proper care of my citrus trees, just letting them grow and left to their own devices. However, after doing a lot of reading on this forum, I have started fertilizing and watering with rainwater if there has been no rain for a week. The cold weather in Florida has caused all the citrus to bud out beautifully. I have a satsuma that is 6' tall and 5' wide that has plenty of root and lots of leaves, and is 5 yrs in the ground with never a bloom. It has lots of buds on it now and has enough leaves, roots and branches to make some fruit. We are so excited!

Oh, Patty, thank you very much. I am happy to say that I am glad that I came back to hear from you good folks again. I put my patio enclosure in the back burner of my plans again. Or it may not come true at all now. I am just happy with the changes I made and I put it to good use. I raised the roof to 8 ft high and clear quiet a number of clutters so when I had a party one night (not planned)everybody had so much fun. We hold it to the patio I mean all the teenagers congregate there and they create their own entertainment like dancing with the blazing music and they tried to outdo one another to the blaze of the music. Glad the neighbors did not complain. The adults sang songs to the kareoki playing in the living room. After my vacation, I am tempted to add a vacation home to my vacant lot with a swim pool. It's very affordable because the labor is so cheap there. Dale: Thanks for the welcome. Glad to hear from you again. Yes, the first thing I did was spray my citrus the minute I got home for aphids. And I bet they are glad to see me again.

Fragrance is the major reason of my gardening. They must have a nice fragrance then I will start considering other factors before I choose to buy one and stick in my yard unless it has the significant quality. Right now I have a trellis by a front door all covered by star jasmine and I am in heaven too! The most fragrant of all citrus blossoms is the Bouquet de Fleurs sour orange. It is also the most beautiful flower of all citrus flowers. Behind that would be grapefruits and pummelos. They all smell wonderful, though :-) I agree, Evan, my Cocktail is just so richly fragrant. I can always pick it out, even when I'm standing many feet away. It has a particular smell that is just beyond all the others, besides the Bouquet de Fleurs. Patty S.

You are so welcome Teresa, Just a little "thank you" for the wonderful wild rice. I'm glad they arrived uninjured. You never know what will happen in transport.

I'm sorry you are feeling bad. It sounds like a day off to me, especially with that kind of wind chill. It's hard to imagine those cold of temperatures since I was at the beach yesterday and temps were around 73.

Now, for Shamoo (Susan)Greek DVD's. I'm thinking some home grown garlic when it's ready this year. I'm sure you don't need lemons and grapefruit living in California and all!

Generosity sure warms the heart in this cold cold winter chill.

And you sure need the extra vitamin C to get you back to good health, to shovel (or scoop) more snow. :-)

I can't believe that after 3 days of fever and 1 day of a killer sore throat - I feel great! Gargling with hot salt water always does it for me. And drinking lemon juice and hot water helped. The trick that burned through the fever? When I lived in Italy I had the worst cold/flu of my life. The lady that owned the pensione where I lived made a really hot bath for me one night and brought me heated brandy in warm milk with sugar and lemon peels. I thought the water was going to make my skin peel off. And after drinking that concoction my body turned into a sauna. It works like a charm! Woke up today - fever gone!

It has been snowing big fluffy flakes for the past 2 hours. I am going out to clean the driveway. Not shovel, not scoop, but "push broom" it too the sides. Renter guy can get out the blower in the morning.
