I've wondered the same thing....I posted, so long ago, I don't even think about this forum, much anymore.
I posted, wanting to know if anyone has ever made apple-head dolls.
Nearly a year later, I got an e-mail, from a lady, who lives in France. she was looking for recipes, for apples...lol
We've been e-mailing fun stuff, back and forth, for all these months, now. She's getting married, in Africa, in July and I'm trying to make an attempt, to attend her wedding party.
A strange twist, to a simple post. We never did discuss dolls, though, of all funny things......
What kind of dolls are you interested in asking about? and like you, I don't know why no one checks in here.....it needs a boost.

Hi Becky!!
I really enjoyed your post! And you are right!..."A strange twist to a simple post"!! LOL. It's amazing how the simplest things can change a whole life.

I'm really not interested in a particular kind of doll...just all dolls in general. I tried the apple head dolls a long time ago. I must have done something wrong though, because they turned really dark. I still have them, but they don't look very nice. I have also made cloth dolls, which I love to do. For the past year I have been doing the Reborns. I have a hard time adopting them out.(I tend to get really attached to each one I do). But if I didn't do that I wouldn't be able to afford to keep doing them.
Thanks for posting, hope to chat with you again!
Oh Yeah...Hope you can make it to your friends Wedding this summer!!

How many annual hours?

Man, this is freakin' INCREDIBLE!!! I had already learned of wide variations WITHIN South Carolina from a friend and fellow GW member who went through the program in the Midlands the same time I went through the Upstate program, but these variations seem to be just as wide from state to state, and within different areas of OTHER states, as well. Looks like the Master Gardener Association of the Piedmont has about the lowest requirements of any of your programs, but then we also have a VERY active program, so maybe that makes up for it. We have two classes each year, from October to March... 3 hours a day either afternoon or evening, for 17 weeks, with a limit of 30 in each class, and very few dropouts. Our only homework assignments were to do our weekly readings (which sometimes was close to 100 pages), but still... and we're required to do 40 hours of volunteer work to be certified, but that can begin week one, with the only limitation being that we can't answer questions in the Extension office until we've finished and passed the course. I turned in 42 hours along with my final exam on exam day, and received my certification at graduation ceremonies. We have NO recertification requirements beyond that except to pay an annual $10 fee. And folks have as many years as they wish to do those initial 40 hours... you could finish the course in 2003, like I did, and turn in your 40th hour in 2006 and still get certified then! On the OTHER hand, our group is active enough with its food-growing programs for other non-profit groups that we won a national award for it the year before I became involved. Last couple of years haven't done quite as well, due to weather and other things... but our group isn't run through the Extension service -- it's totally separate, except that it's under the "auspices" of the Clemson Extension Service. In all other parts of the state, however, the programs ARE run through the extension service and often offer only day classes because their MAIN volunteer program is getting folks to answer phones at the local extension office, thereby making the budget-cutting politicians happy, since normally PAID work is being done by volunteers. They have NO community gardens they maintain to grow food for the hungry, and so forth. So our program may be EASIER on the master gardeners, but perhaps it's better for the community? This is an interesting debate, and I figure that eventually it will become a real controversy and things will become standardized all over. By the way, I continue to volunteer, and even led tours at our local public garden (not affiliated with the program, but where I earned a lot of my volunteer hours), in an electric scooter while I was recovering from a broken ankle earlier this year. However many do no hours beyond their initial 40, and I know some do none at all, and just take the class for the info. I feel they're cheaters. By the way, my friend in the Midlands couldn't start her volunteer hours until after class finished because all they get to do is work for the extension office, too... and oh yeah, her final exam was closed-book and notes... ours was open-book and notes. That's another debate, but our program directors said they didn't care how we got the information, as long as we knew how to get it and how to apply it. Makes sense to me, Jeff

I know as a "summer person" that I am not considered a Maniac but I have to spend the work year here in Illinois with my husband as both our jobs are here. Our future retirement house in Maine has a winter tenant so we can afford to use it for a few weeks of bliss in the summer. I first visited Maine in 1964 and have not missed a summer since then. My heart swells with joy when we cross the Bath bridge, open the car windows and smell the first salty air. I garden with perennials in the beds and annuals in the window boxes and containers on the porch. I lost my Bonica rose and many perennials with that hard winter last year and still had Japanese beetles in my Rugosas. Sigh. We look out at Indiantown Island in West Boothbay Harbor so the bird activity is as much fun as the plant stuff. I dug a little pond a few years ago and that brings a lot of pleasure. The resident frog is big enough to croak so loudly we hear him indoors! Mary

Hello, This is exactly the information I have been looking for. I have read that one acre can support approx 1 to 2 chickens w/o supplemental feed. Safest weed killer for lawns (clover and other weeds)
Q
Comments (97)
Sorry. This will be a long one. It always is with me. (blushing) I'm with the OP on this one. Even if no one but me ever saw my lawn, I would want it to be dark, rich green GRASS...and nothing else. (I'm known for wanting everything to be beautiful. I'm also a bit of a home body, and enjoy spending time in my yard. Many guests have remarked that, no matter where they look (on my property), there's always something beautiful. I'm always taken aback by those comments, since while that was MY goal, I never expected others to pick up on it.) Case in point about the intentional act of putting down grass, and not other (lower maintenance) plants. I own a small, remote island. I made the decision to create a lawn area and, once you include the slow-moving barge fees (3 days to get from its port to the island), labour, equipment, and materials, that lawn cost me $14,000. That obviously begs the question, why, on earth, would anyone spend a nickel putting in expensive, high-maintenance grass, only to let it be taken over by clover and other weeds??? My husband and I recently purchased a 19th century farmhouse in need of roof-to-foundation renovation. As such, I inherited a lawn that is EASILY 70% weeds, including clover so thoroughly interwoven, it would be impossible to pull by hand. I pride myself on my beautiful lawns and gardens, and can spend/have sent hours, each day, ensuring everything is healthy and how I want it. At my last home, I developed a bit of a reputation for being out weeding my lawn by hand for hours, plus how awesome my expansive lawn was. My point is, I want my lawn and gardens to be a certain way; plant the plants I want; pull the plants I don't want; unafraid to put-in the effort to achieve that. I prefer not to use any kinds of "chemicals", other than the ammonia and mild soap I include in my homemade fertilizer recipe. (My last home was a beach house. So, that only reinforced my desire to go chemical-free.) But this new-to-me house is demoralizing me...practically to the point of tears, much of it because of the state of the (laughing) "landscaping". Sure, mowing can cut off 60% of the sea of clover flowers that make my lawn look white (or dying...can't decide which). But there are still lower flowers that seem to sprout up to full height within the next 24hrs after a mow. These flowers last from late spring to fall. In short, I'm plagued by clover flowers throughout the entire season I want my lawn to look great. It's just such a shame the previous owners didn't nip the clover in the bud, when each plant was jut a little, round cluster. I love catching them early, knowing I've stopped additional infiltration. But I'm helpless, overall. Looks like I'll have to replace the entire lawn; start from scratch; do what the previous owners SHOULD have done, and pulled weeds when I first see them. I'm not really buying the whole "benefits of clover" thing, amidst a grass lawn. If I wanted a clover lawn, I would plant a clover lawn. Putting down and maintaining grass is an expense in time and resources. Clover is virtually free (since it shows up on the wind), and is seemingly mantenance-free. Since most sod and grass seed are sold with some guarantee of being weed- (and clover-) free, I just don't believe that most people who spend the money and effort to put in a grass lawn, are okay with losing any percentage of it to other, invasive, undesirable plants. I kind of liken it to suggesting that a Ferrari owner would be okay with someone switching it with a Cavalier, and just saying, 'They both get me from point A to point B, so I don't mind.' I can fully envision putting in other kinds of ground cover, and have considered it at past properties. Not being my first rodeo, I already have substantial plans to reduce the amount of lawn area, and increase planting beds. But much of this current property begs for a beautiful, thick, dark green lawn...of grass. No dandelions. No clover, but particularly no clover flowers. (I'd be more okay with clover, if not for the flowers.) The desperation was so great, I did something I thought I'd never do, and tried the iron-based WEED-B-GONE product. (Harsh, chemical herbicides have been banned in my area for years...resulting in public parks being taken over by weeds, for the most part. It's such a shame, in the sense that a healthy, well-maintained lawn is not only beautiful, but fantastic underfoot.) That is really my philosophy, beyond the aesthetic. A lawn should be cool, soft, and luxurious under bare feet. Weeds, even overgrown grass, also tend to make barefoot walking less than a joy. So far, I haven't found a way to get rid of mats of clover. The WEED-B-GONE did nothing I could notice. I'm at my rope's end on ths matter, and likely will have to pull up the entire lawn, to put down new, almost-weed-free sod, where I can physically manage pulling individual weeds as they appear. I guess I'd plead with people to pull unwanted clover plants when they're small... if not for yourself, then for the next property owner. Sure, it means time, every day, or every few days, combing the lawn, looking for weeds. Yes, it can be back-breaking and time-consuming. But that grass lawn didn't get there by accident. A grass lawn is intentional.

Hi,
I bought a copy of ArtDoll Quarterly recently and have become interested in trying some sort of doll making. I'm not much with fabric, stitching, that kind of thing. But I like to work with clay and paper. I think the props are as interesting as the dolls themselves.
I was just going to ya hoo to see if there are any fun groups there for dollmakers. I need some help getting started!

I do cloth dolls and polymer clay figures.
If anyone knows of a good magazine about
cloth dolls, would love to check it out.
Have found some interesting websites and books
about cloth dolls.

It's been years since I made dolls or bought magazines. Some of my favorites were Doll Reader (they had patterns in the back) Doll Designs, & Dolls. I googled Doll Reader & see Hobby House Press still makes design books

I get catalogs by Clotilde she's got various doll making things for sale. My favorite is the doll zippers & buttons, as well as patterns. Another favorite pattern company is Sew Sweet Dolls I've made various dolls from this company, Twinkle being my favorite. She's also got a clown pattern that I loved making. I changed the hair & outfit a little & made 2 girl clowns.

I'm an on and off cloth doll maker, though I have dabbled in Japanese paper doll making too. Finding this forum has got me in the on again mood...though it is spring- time for gardening and I'm doing a reno project in the house starting next week, plus have fieldwork on the farm starting tomorrow.

I like cloth dolls for the variability and ease and also am a costumer. so sometimes a small costume will satisfy the craving.

wow, it's been ages and a half, since I checked in here..
my user name used to be desiterata and I've since changed it..
I thought for those who checked in here, so long ago..I would add a footnote to my friendship with the lady in France...

I didn't attend the wedding in Ghana, because of passport/costs/insurance and the obvious expense.
I did keep in touch with her and when she got married in June, not July, like I had posted.
she was there for a month and flew back to France by herself. because her new husband was an African resident.
she was ill, the entire time, from marriage, through the month of early marriage.
her last email I received, said she would email me the next day, after she could maybe get some much needed sleep, from being so incredibly sick.
I never heard from her again, until August, when her daughter emailed me, to inform me that her mother had died of malaria, about 7 days after her last email to me.

after her death, she went through all of her mother's files and found the friends she had been in touch with.
I was heartbroken to hear it and it's been 3 years now...
whenever I even think of applehead dolls, I think of Uli, the wonderful, friendly lady, who used to send me jokes and recipes in German.
she was a German lady, who had a small orchard in France, who was only doing voluntary work, to help the poor.
that's how she met the man she later married..
very sad ending to her gift of help, to so many.

I have decided to get back into doll making, but this time I am going whole hog. I used to make my own sculpted dolls and animals, but now I am going to work in molding as well. I am glad to see other doll makers to converse with.

Hi everyone

Seems like this might be a low traffic board - but that suits a slower paced person like myself.

An intro

Gwen and I are porcelain dollmakers / teachers in North Tasmania (that big island that sits just under Australia)

We have been having fun with dolls for around 7 years and have had students for the last 4.

I am happy to share any information that I can and will nor doubt have my share of questions as well.

I have played a little with sculpting, cloth dolls, moldmaking, jewellery and have a few skills in other areas as well.

I look forward to an interesting and enjoyable exchange.

Peter

Hi, I am a luker starting today. Other sites I frequent are very slow. I think the whole reason is that we had holidays. Then cold weather and short days. People just have less time to do what they like I guess. My DH is sick and that takes a lot of my time.

I have made a lot os soft body dolls. Made some for my DD friend for her daughter and niece and mother, but think she fell in love with them and did not gift them but kept them. I did not see many black dolls so I made those. I made some of the black "golly" dolls with my own madeup pattern. I almo made some wrapped rag dolls (over wire frames) and some 'bottle' dolls. Most of those I have seen on tv programs and made some sorta like them. Other wise I do an internet search and look for a particular doll. Now you can put in 'free patterns for cloth dolls' and find many sites that have free patterns online. Good luck. Keep stitchin.

I've been making primitive dolls for about 4 years now. My specialty is Annie dolls, but I never know what I'll be creating. I don't use patterns for anything.
I don't even try to explain to others how my mind works, it's too hard. Having all this creativity can be maddening at times, your brain doesn't shut down.
First time to post here, usually on the garden side, but there doesn't seem to be much happening on this site.
I have some things in the works, but I have a full load right now, so I don't know when I'll get them done.
Have fun creating.

seaglassic: That is a sad story, and I can understand how you feel. Life is so strange, isn't it? However, you did have a short period to enjoy your new-found friend.

I've never made dolls, but have always been interested. Pop in here now and then to see if I can learn a place to begin, but have yet to do so.

I still looking for a clown doll pattern. I got if from a Craft'n Things magazine 1989,1990/3 sorry can't be more specific.I made it for my daughter, and would love to make one for my granddaughters, unfortunately I was unable to bring my crafting things back to the U.K. The clown was about 2ft tall with multicolored yarn hair, the thing I liked most was his boots. The were sewn with his legs(didn't come off) They had shoe laces, I had to buy a special tool to make the shoe lace holes. Please if there is anyone out there who has this pattern I would be eternally grateful. I will be happy tp pay for postage etc; Many thanks Gillian Wilhelm

Has anyone heard or tried making a dollie blanket. It's where you make the upper part of a doll (head, arms, chest) sew it to the corner of a baby blanket. This way the child can cuddle up in the blanket and have a baby to hug.

Hey Pam and Becky, I would love to see pics of the reborns babies.. I made many many of the Time out dolls and sold almost all of them like about 50 or 60 of them and each time it was like giving away one of my children, infact my grandson came to our house one day after I had been to a craft show and sold pretty much of the dolls I had made and he wondered where all the kids when. I almost felt like I had sold part of our family.. LOL he was just a little guy then.. but he still remembers as I still have one or two of the dolls left that I would not sell. It was funny how some of the folks who bought the dolls were buying them for either their mothers or fathers , aunts or grandparents.. I even made one with red red hair for a lady ..whose little boy had fire red hair and so she wanted to give the doll to her Mother.. I told her to bring me a snip of his hair and I would try to match and I was able to do so and she was as happy as a bug in a rug. One other young man bought one for his mother.. when he gave it to her.. she cried, and said..that was the only doll she ever had, as when she was growing up they were to poor to have toys and dolls.. she sent me a thank you letter and I cried too. So Dolls are just like family...
