anyone make their own insecticidal soap spray?
Comments (31)thanks for the reply dan! i had read on another website that someone used a homemade insecticide soap against leaf miners which is why i was planning on trying it. i have read some of the many threads on leaf miners, but nothing too promising has been revealed. is there anything you, or anyone else here, has had success with against leaf miners? the most useful advice seems to be to pick off the infested leaves, but that's pretty much going to mean all of my tiny chard plants... any ideas if i can still pick off nearly all the leaves and the plants will still produce new leaves? this is my first year gardening, so any advice is much appreciated! i know that for harvesting the chard you can pick off some stalks and new ones grow, it's just that my largest plant is only a few inches tall at this point, so i'm worried about the resilience of such small plants. and any reason why i shouldn't use murphy's or other soaps on plants/leaves that i plan on eating? thank you!...See Moredoes anyone buy 'regular' appliances anymore?
Comments (54)We are getting a GE AG Cafe range ($2500) and I would have been perfectly happy with a GE or Frigidaire slide-in ($1600), but DH is "splurging" on the Cafe. We want a panel-ready DW, so that's going to be about ~$1000, but it will probably be a KitchenAid or something. We are looking at a few different standard depth SxS frigs in the $1500-$1800 range, all very ordinary. We are leaving shelf space for a GE convection MW ($500), but may make do with our $120 Sharp for awhile longer. Our Faber Cristal hood ($550) is Italian (ooh-la-la) so I'm not sure if that's regular or not, but fairly inexpensive. Altogether that's about 6K - less if we can make some smart buys - and I can't say I feel like I'm doing without. All you have to do is look at the Sears flyer every week to see what most people can afford. DH and I briefly toyed with the idea of a Lacanche range because they're so darn beautiful. The more we talked about what else we could do with that $$$ (mostly outfit the kids gameroom that is part of this addition), the less attractive the Lacanche looked to us. We also would have felt a little silly, because we're really just "regular" cooks. Our friends who are "good" cooks all manage on ranges less expensive than the Cafe. If we really step up the cooking when we retire 20 years from now, we may revisit that beautiful Lacanche though....See MoreLOOKING for: anyone ever make their own cookbook
Comments (19)I have a wonderful "coffee table" book by Claire Jones titled "Monet's Table." It is a pictorial history of the artists life and includes his paintings and recipes. It inspired me to do the same for my family. I am a creative artist and use that creativity in my recipes. The biggest regret I have is letting my grandparents die without getting all that history and all those recipes. My mom was NOT a cook! OMG! All she ever cooked was meatloaf, mac and cheese, and ewwwww salmon patties. OMG I forgot that dreaded liver!! I am using Word for my book. It will take me a long time, but I keep it in my head and try to photograph the family enjoying my recipes at get together s (as is pictured in the Monet book). The one they will remember fondly is cranking the ice cream in the hot summer by the swimming pool. One cranking, one sitting, everyone supervising, and then the licking of the paddle! I've got all the recipes in the book so far. We kick em up every year. I love to grow my own herbs, cure my own olives, and make my own wine from things that we grow. I will include all that in the book, and I will illustrate as much as I can with watercolor and other mediums. I like the idea you give here of sleeving the pages in plastic. Kinkos will plastic coat pages also for a price, but that is an option, and they will bind it all also. It's a project, but a fun one! Love all your ideas!! Suzi...See MoreDoes anyone can anymore? WAAAAY O.T.
Comments (8)#$LL YES, I CAN! I put away a total of 97 ears of corn from our own garden. About 27 jars-pint size only- of tomatoes, not just canned tomatoes but also salsa and tomato sauce. (I quit canning maters early 'cause my left leg suddenly started swelling up when I stand too long. Never happened to me before.) We only did about 17 jars of green beans 'cause we took lots to MIL. Froze squash until my hands started to look yellow. And PICKLES! Geez, my DH took care of those. We have bread and butter and dill pickles to last until the next crop comes in. We are currently waiting for turnips, carrots and MORE GREEN BEANS! Not sure what he thinks I'm gonna do with them 'cause I am done for the season. Currently we are getting our pumpkins out of the patch. We planted BIG MACS and the regular jackolatern pumpkins. I will post a pic of the kids with the pumpkins! We are most excited about those pumpkins! I plan to have apples next weekend. I LOVE cooked apples. We freeze them. I have never made jam but I think I would like to try. I do make some red pepper jelly, but it just never seems to be as good as my SIL does it. DH loves his garden and since he works so hard getting it going each year, I feel compelled to "put the food up" as he calls it. His parents always canned. I don't mind it too much. As you stated, it's good to know where your food came from. Ours is totally organic. We don't put anything on our plants. We do have beetle traps at various places around the yard though. My friends tell me I'm a dying breed. Don't know about that but I don't know many people, especially my age, who can anymore....See Moreannie1992
