RECIPE: Cold Oven Pound Cake

1 c margarine, softened

1/2c butter, softened

1 (8 oz) pk cream cheese

3c sugar

2 tsp vanilla

6 large eggs

3c cake flour

dash of salt

Combine margarine, butter, cream cheese, and sugar. Beat well; add salt and vanilla. One at a time, beating well after each, add eggs. Add flour and mix thoroughly. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10" tube pan or 2 greased and floured loaf pans. Place in cold oven, set oven at 275Â° and bake for 1 Â½ hrs. or until tests done. Cool in pan and remove.

Wonder why it calls for both margarine AND butter. I'm going to have to try this. I like making loaf cakes since it's easy to freeze that way. Thanks!

Ginger, I've no idea unless who ever wrote the recipe decided it was more cost effective to use some margarine instead of all butter??
Good cake though.

I have been looking for a good pound cake recipe. I have tried several but they always seem dry or have no flavor. I am gonna try this one tonight for dessert. As far as everything else we are discussing. I found this forum a few months ago. I have since visited everyday. One of the things that attracts me to these forums is that people want to share with each other not only recipes, but stories and pics of their families. It seems to me like alot of people consider this a "little family" and want to share a little of their lives. Maybe we should start a forum where we can share family stories and pics.....Or is there already one I am not aware of?

Jude, There are cute little mini loaf pans on the market also. I can get 6 mini loaves out of one large banana bread recipe. Here is a muffin recipe that tastes like pound cake to me! Sour Cream Muffins 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup sugar or less 1/2cup vegetable oil 1/2t vanilla 1/4t grated nutmeg 2 cups self-rising flour 1 cup sour cream 1 cup fresh blueberries, optional Mix egg, sugar, oil, vanilla, nutmeg. Stir flour into wet alternately with sour cream. Fold in blueberries. Put into 12 greased muffin cups or paper lined cups. Bake at 400 F for 15-20 minutes. Makes 12 muffins. When I make these w/o the blueberries, I brush the still warm from the oven muffins with melted butter and sprinkle the tops heavily with cinnamon sugar. Yummm.... Teresa

PEACHY POLKA-DOT CRUMB PIE 1 unbaked 10" deep-dish pie shell 2 1/2 cups sliced fresh peaches 1/2 cup blueberries 2 cups sugar 1 1/3 cups flour 1/8 tsp salt 1/2 cup sour cream 2 eggs, beaten 1 stick butter Sliced fresh peaches for garnish Fresh blueberries for garnish Preheat oven to 350Â°. combine the 2 1/2 cups peaches & 1/2 cup blueberries; spoon into the pie shell. Combine 1 cup of the sugar, 1/3 cup of the flour & the salt in a bowl & mix well. Stir in the sour cream & beaten eggs. Spoon over the fruit in the pie shell. Mix the remaining 1 cup flour & 1 cup sugar in a bowl. Cut in the butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over the top. Bake 55-60 minutes or until b rowned. Garnish w/sliced peaches & blueberries.~~Southern on Occasion *I've used drained, thawed frozen peaches for this.

That's an interesting method of baking - I couldn't do it in my new ovens because the preheat feature turns on both the bottom and upper elements to heat the oven cavity more thoroughly. I have a couple of pound cake recipes that I make frequently. Love it with berries and whipped cream.

Marlen's Cuban Bread is started in a cold oven and that was what reminded me of this recipe. Works very well and I like this cake better than a sour cream pound cake. (Keith prefers the latter though).

I have a cold oven pound cake recipe that is very similar and very good. I have always wondered about the cold oven, but it always turned out perfect.

Sure Eileen, here it is:

Cold Oven Pound Cake

2 sticks margarine or
1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup crisco
3 cups sugar
5 eggs
3 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. lemon extract
1 canned milk

Cream butter and crisco with sugar till light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time
Add flour and milk alternately until mixed
Pour into a greased and floured tube pan
Place in cold oven -- 350 degrees
Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes (do not open oven for 1 hour)

Here's a third recipe for comparative purposes. This recipe was given to me by my husband's ex-MIL. She demonstrated what a classy lady she is by not leaving out any ingredients!

3 cups sugar
1 cup butter
6 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups cake flour (measured after sifting)
1/2 pint (unwhipped) whipping cream

Cream the sugar and butter together. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well. Add the vanilla. Mix the flour and whipping cream in together, a little of each at a time. Pour into either a (greased/floured) tube pan or two (greased/floured) loaf pans. Put into a cold oven and bake at 300* for 1 hour, 25 mins.

Greetings ! Faye's COPC differs from my Great Aunt's in the baking powder; as my Aunt did not use BP. This recipe has been lost until I found Faye and this site.
