Another thread of 'old crafts you used to do'
Comments (24)What a fun thread! I made the loop potholders as a little girl. I liked to polish sticks up and desparately wanted a rock tumbler but my parents said it was a gimmick and wouldn't buy me one. (A couple years ago i visited CalamityJ and she gave me one, finally!) I was so excited when I learned to sew in 8th grade at school. I taught myself to embroider around the same time, my mom embroidered but didn't sew. My Memere (Mom's mom) did everthing, and very well. I also one of those plastic children's looms as a little girl but I wasn't very good at it. I remember the knitting knobby but didn't do well with it. I just saw some things - necklaces- at the farmers market made out of those "ropes" from the knobby today! Somewhere along the way I learned to knit and crochet, but I prefer crochet. I used to make and sell terrariums in Almeden wine bottles. And I macrame'd in my late teens and early 20s. I had one of those piggy banks made from a bleach bottle made by my Memere. My other grandmother was a cook and a gardener, but she got one of her friends to crochet clothes for a little doll that I still have and love. One Christmas my mom and Memere knitted me a whole shoe box of beautiful Barbi clothes. Memere made my Chatty Cathy an incredible wardrobe as well. I think many of these things are still at my Mom's house. My mom gave the old doll carriage that had been hers and then mine to my niece, her grandaughter, and I haven't dared to ask her what happened to it now that she is grown up. My Memere made a little quilt for it to go with when it was passed on to me, and I wish I had that little quilt. I have some of my Mememre's quilts, and I have an unfinished one that I started for me. In more recent years I decoupaged a lot, especially some lamps. I scrapbooked a lot for several years, now I'm wondering if I should get rid of the supplies. And I have so much glass for the plate flowers and totems, and molds for concrete objects. Now I am mosaicking. I wonder if I'll ever settle on one or 2 things? Kathy...See Moreold - old - old crafts
Comments (88)AHHHHHHHHHH....memories! And what a journey it has been! I remember all the things mentioned here. Each time I thought I had another one...someone came up with it. I'm more "hippy" than hippie...LOL! Scarlett, I know the feeling! Those hipster jeans just don't fit right anymore! One thing I did learn to do back in the 60's and didn't see mentioned here were "Christmas Spiders". From the small glass Christmas balls and pipe cleaners, with sequin eyes. They looked like this...of course you've got to remember this one has been around for a good number of years now! LOL..ugly thing, isn't it? With new products and vintage jewerly, they now look more like this example. I made dozens of these every year..and sell most of them these days. We still use the Christmas ornaments like this. I'll never forget the year we decided to make this the family Christmas project! Neither will our 2 daughters! We all had such sore fingers. But, they treasure these ornaments now, and like myself use them every year. Let's not forget Santa and Mrs. Claus made from dish detergent bottles. With the dime store (then Ben Franklin) faces and hands, etc. They are still part of my Santa collection but I don't seem to have a picture of them anywhere in my on line albums. I still make a few of the old things...most often with a bit of a modern twist...using some of the easier to use products. The pasta angel is a good example of evolving pasta art. I do have problems finding the metal thumb tacks used for the candle in these. Someone mentioned the crochet covered clothes hangers. I'm just old fashioned I guess...I still do them. Along with little sachet bags to go with them. I love collecting the old crochet patterns and making stuff from them. These are the vintage pattern projects that I have recently finished. The shaded pansy thread colors are almost impossible to find these days. You can see some of my spiders in this basket...they are not Christmas Spiders. I call them my illusive, almost extinct pansy spiders! I wanted some really pretty silk pansy to put in this basket and couldn't find any...so I used the next best thing. LOL I think I should stop now! I don't think the "old" crafts will be completely lost...they will just evolve. Comments (8)I had not gone to any in years so yesterday stopped in at the Senior Center....granted, not really a craft show. Lots of knitted and crochetted slippers afghans, hats, etc. and plenty of cute "hanging bags' for walkers and other bags and quilts. Also fabric, nicely displayed; someone's "stash", do doubt. Some dolls and lots and lots of cute Christmas decorations. Maybe the "knitters and sewers" are now in the Senior Center (free tables) and Assisted Living places? Some jewelry too. I bought Jam and Peanut Brittle (for DH), but they also had cookies and candies home-made. No books or "vendor" type stuff. I really think that there is a "movement" in the country, of folks who have grown tired of "collecting" stuff. I have plenty to sell. I would wish my young grandchildren today would bring unusual "edible" or "enjoy it now" kinds of products as my collectibles overflow. (and, yes, I do have paper files of pictures, poems and crafty things they have gifted me over the years....they are priceless to me....and will be to them when they are "disposing of Grandma's stuff". I would tell them to write a journal and keep their memories in it...a journal will bring back memories that you"ll be glad to remember, instead of the cute windmill salt & pepper shakers that collect dust. Well, those things will keep MY memories alive....not theirs, unless I have shared MY memories of those salt and pepper shakers. OOPS...think I got off track!...See MoreAnyone missing out on Orchids Shows?
Comments (16)Hey buddy! So Jose bought me an Oncidium Sharry Baby last December. It was crowded in the pot it was in. It was massive to me for the price $30. The owner told me I got a great deal. I don't think he realized how big it was when I snatched it up. It had 2 massive inflos on it. They were over 2 feet tall and they had TONS of side branches and buds. The owner said it was going to be repotted. I went against the opinions of most people and decided to repot it. I stripped off as much of the media it was in and then rinsed it as much as I could. I had a vase that was the perfect size, and I used it for the orchid. I cut off all the dead and damaged roots, and I put it in the vase. I filled it with rain water up to maybe a quarter inch away from the actual pseudobulbs. It not only bloomed and thrived, but after it finished blooming about a month later, it produced more side branches off of the inflos! About 3 months later it started growing 3 more new pseudobulbs! It bloomed again, and since then I have separated one of the new pseudobulbs and I put it straight into a glass jar with about an inch of water. It's thriving now and growing new pseudobulbs. Right now the original plant has grown a huge inflo and has tons of buds. I found another pseudobulb growing off the roots that are submerged in water. I'm going to have to find a wider vase and put it into that. I think I'm going to by those decorative stones you can find in the craft section of Walmart and use those to support the plant. I'll send pics to you in your email....See Moreflakefromfla
