Lifepine vs Cedar

Sorry, i meant to post this on its own, did not mean to hijack RedLover's query.

Lifepine just quoted $290 a square. I have a lumber yard sourcebook with cedar shingles in it, but it looks like it is really hard for a layperson to figure out the cost per sq for cedar, because of questions in re single or double coverage, backer or not, bleaching oil, grade, etc etc etc. Looks to me like maybe 150/sq?

At any rate, no mention of anywhere of Lifepine becing competitive with or less than cedar, so my guess is it is certainly more costly.

What was the exposure and size of the shingles LifePine quoted? If it was 5/8" x 18" with a 5" exposure it would be roughly equivalent to white cedar shingle. LifePine can be much larger in thickness, length and have greater exposure.

White cedar shingles would need a preservative finish.

Don't forget shipping. Cedar is from the North, yellow pine is from the South.

Oddly,the Lifepine did not give any of those specs, which I was expecting in order to line it up w my cedar price table.

It is on my list of things to discuss with the architect, thanks for mentioning the product here!

It makes me wonder what else you would put on the end of the phrase "if I were building a house"? : )

The white cedar single stains described in this thread are mostly applied by dipping the shingles in stain at the factory which provides the best protection. Weatherwash is a brand of interior furniture stain that can be used on exterior wood with a protective coating of Weatherwash's Exterior Water Sealer. That seems like additional expense for less protection.

We have had hardieplank on our house since 2005. It was the pre-primed hardieplank and we painted it after it was installed, so I can't speak to the durability of the Hardie factory finish. But as far as our siding goes, there has been no problems with peeling, swelling, or any other issues - except for being slightly dirty, the paint looks as good as the day we painted it (wish I could say the same thing for the wood trim on the eaves). We get snow here as well, though not usually high enough for long enough that it would sit high against the siding for weeks on end. But we do get snow and haven't had any issues. As far as installation, Hardie had a few specific instructions that are apparently ignored by a lot of installers. You want to make sure they prime any cut ends -- our contractor just kept a quart of cheap primer next to the saw and as soon as he'd cut a board, he'd slop some primer on it. Also, any butt seams (where two boards join together to make one "long" piece) should not be caulked but rather should have a piece of flashing behind them to keep water out of the seam - our guy used small pieces of aluminum. Finally, you need to keep the hardie several inches off any rooflines (of porches, etc.) -- I think at the time the guideline was 2". And yes, this does look a bit gappy and it would look better lower, but as our contractor said, you can have it lower and rotting and no warranty since you installed it wrong or you can have it higher and have it be fine. We opted for the latter and I don't even really see the gap anymore. We used a rainscreen behind our hardie for other reasons (our house was being resided as part of a mold/stucco remediation and we knew the wall cavities weren't fully dry yet so wanted to provide as much airflow as possible), but I'd imagine that that also provides extra protection against any kind of moisture issues. If your cottage is small and you are concerned about snow, that might be something to look into. It didn't cost much to add and would provide extra protection against any moisture issues. 2x6 vs 2x8 cedar deck boards?

I'm getting estimates on replacing my large deck, one of the contractors is asking if I prefer 2x6 or 2x8 cedar deck boards. I had been thinking 2x6 but a big advantage for my situation of 2x8 deck boards is less gaps -- the reason this is important is I have Fir trees near the deck which are constantly clogging the gaps between boards due to them dropping needles and Fir flowers which get stuck in the gaps, so 2x8 means less flossing. So I'm curious pros and cons of 2x6 vs. 2x8 cedar deck boards.

This is pure supposition, but it seems to me that if nothing else, leaves have less carbon mass than wood and therefore have more concentrations of nutrients/minerals per volume and mass than wood. And, as ellatiarella brings out, the decomp rate of leaves is much faster than wood. I agree that while decomposed woody material has benefits ( I use a lot of it myself,) leaves are preferable for both nutrients and turn around time for reentering the soil web. In fact, even in nature the slow decomp of wood benefits carbon sequestration, while the faster decomp of leaves (and more delicate biomass - including grasses and other less durable plant growth) is much more responsible for playing a role in the creation of creating nutrient-rich topsoil. That said... it's also true that any nutrient benefits of composts and mulches are long-term at best. They are not, in themselves, a replacement for situations where fertilizers are needed for optimum plant health.

I have read that pine shingles have a much shorter life than cedar, and the pine shingles in our neighborhood (one of which is definitely LifePine because it is in their website gallery) seem to support that. They don't look nearly as good as the older cedar roofs.

We were considering both options as well, although panels, not shingles. A few friends recommended Maibec and I went to see a recent installation at a friend's house, it looks fabulous (again, they had clapboard like siding, not shingles). It might be worth getting a quote from Maibec too, if you like their shingle product. The warranty looks impressive, but I haven't read the small print. I've pasted a link below.

A number of years ago, I built my own house using Shakertown panelized shingles for the wall siding and was very satisfied with the product. They were left natural to weather naturally.

In my experience the cost of fire-retardant wood shingles on a roof would be prohibitive not to mention the additional maintenance.

You also really need to determine what product your comparing to the Lifepine. Are you talking about using Red Cedar which are normally 18" or White Cedar which would be 16". The Red Cedar are normally considered the more durable and used Naturally or finished. White Cedar (Maibec, etc) are 16" and for any durability need to be finished. The coverage will vary widely depending on the product and then the grade of product used as well as where the product is used (sidewall or roof).
