Need help choosing brick
Comments (3)stunning home! I personally don't love the marble falls coloring with your stone, but honestly, pictures of brick online are often so different than having the sample in-person with your stone. I would suggest getting a few sample boards from Acme and seeing how they look with the stone. We had to drive all over the place to pick out our brick and stone to find the right combo. you should have seen me, walking onto people's property, taking pictures of the sample boards against their houses!! Good luck....See MoreAll brick or brick and stone exterior?
Comments (37)Historically speaking, the use of stone and brick in the same wall is rare for a couple of reasons: 1) these materials have very different coefficients of thermal expansion. Typically brick expands about twice as much as stone (and concrete). That's why its necessary to create a cavity between a single wythe of brick and a concrete block backup wall as well as continuous control joints where these materials meet on the face of a wall. Therefore experienced detailers avoid using these materials together. 2) brickwork is cheaper in material and labor and generally became the commonly used material wherever it became available. Therefore, to most well traveled and observant people, brick and stone in the same wall looks somewhat forced, contrived or even fake. However, on a house where there is no semblance of order or logic, mixing these materials might be just another unconventional, in-your-face feature. I guess you really can't go wrong. I once saw stone and brick used together in Honfleur, France where British and French influences are mixed. It was so unusual I took photos. I think the dark units are probably stone....See Morechoosing exterior product. brick versus stone?
Comments (4)That amorphous massed design emphasizes the massive CAD undesigned trussed roof, and it’s exorbitant cost, and wasted unusable space. I’d suggest simplifying the home with a main centralized less wide body, and obviously subordinate additions. Stick frame it, and the 1/2 floor space upstairs becomes accessible, usable, livable space, and consequently, the main floor home body can be much smaller. The cost savings from less foundation and less roof mass would more than pay for using an upgraded material like stone as all of the home’s cladding....See MoreWhich brick to choose with mortar colors too please suggest
Comments (20)Is the exterior going to be all brick, or is there also going to be stone and/or siding? This is why people are hoping for pictures or at least a rendering of your home to see the whole exterior. What is the roof color going to be? All of the elements need to go together. Does your builder have other completed homes you can look at? Maybe someone else has already chosen something you like and you can do the same thing (as long as that home is not going to be in view of yours). Does the builder have a design center where you could get help with making these choices? There are hundreds of choices to make when building a new home. This is unlikely to be the first decision you will have to make that will be difficult. You should look for someone local to help you with everything. If the builder doesn't have a design center, ask him/her if s/he can recommend someone....See Moretncraft
