You're talking about putting that stuff in a compost pile and putting the finished compost on your plants, right? I put that stuff in my compost all the time. I put the coffee grounds in with their paper filters. I put paper tea bags in intact -- string and paper tags too. I cut the plastic mesh tea bags open and discard the plastic. There are things you could dig directly into the ground around plants like banana peels, but, for the most part, better to let it decompose first. And when you put stuff around your plants, make sure to keep it 1 1/2" away from the stems to avoid stem rot. I've also used coffee grounds as a mulch but just for acid-loving plants like azaleas.

I'm getting 1 kg Eisenia fetida, the shop that I ordered from says there's about 2000 worms in 1 kg. That means I'll need to feed them 3.5kg of food per week? I will microwave all food scraps before putting them in my bin, that'll make them easier to decompose and will kill off other insect eggs that are on the peels. I've had grain mites infestation in my mealworm colony before, that is something that I really don't want to encounter again! Do ALL worm bins have mites? Are there any exceptions? Where do the mites come from anyway? I'm really hoping that if I microwave everything first, I could be exempt from mites... Its good to know I can feed them silkworm frass, as silkworms are pooping machines!! And their frass molds with the slightest presence of moisture, so it should be good for the worm bin...? I'm going to start preparing for the bedding today. I've got white newspaper that I'll shred to thin pieces, and I've got some egg crates too. I'll add the saved up vegetable scraps to the bedding for pre-composting.

I have 2 - one is a passport holder with 8 credit card slots on one side and an id slot on the other for a driver's license. The other one is a wristlet that will hold my cell phone too I didn't purchase them because they claimed they were RFID blocking but because of their features. Unfortunately the opinions as to whether you need one or if they really work seem to vary widely. One of the things that confuses me is that the chip cards are advertised as offering greater security - but all of the ones I have also have the swipe feature - so doesn't that still make them less secure? Citrus peels do contain a compound that is toxic to worms. It's not a big concern to put a few orange peels in a home worm bin occasionally, as long as they are only a small percentage of the total fodder - the compound does get broken down eventually by bacterial activity and orange peels become part of the finished vermicompost in the long run. However, any large volume of citrus peels in a worm bin is another matter: you could see a worm die-off, and the worms would not be able to process the citrus effectively even with bacterial help. So I would definitely separate out the citrus peels and not put them in the worm bin. (Outdoor composting is fine for the citrus, the toxic compound will disperse more readily outdoors and it's easier for your free-ranging worms to avoid it.) Another precaution to take with a large volume of fruit scraps in a worm bin is to make sure they don't compact down, get concentrated, stay wet and start to ferment - something else that will kill worms. You'll need to make sure there is plenty of bedding mixed with the fruit scraps and that the mixture is well aerated, and that you're not adding too much for the worms to keep up with. Another factor is the design of your bin - wide and shallow is a lot better than deep, because more surface area of bedding in contact with the air allows for better aeration and evaporation of excess moisture. I agree that you probably will not be able to compost this large volume of fruit scraps if you get it regularly, regardless of method. Whatever system you use will get overwhelmed pretty fast by lack of space. It would really be too bad for all those great fruit peels to go to waste! - But maybe you can hook your friend up with a larger composting operation that wants the scraps on a regular basis.
