I saw a really neat santa wreath

at the Goodwill store today. It was expensive looking and I guess the Goodwill people thought so too because they had $60 on it. I stood there and looked at it for a couple of minutes. I didn't check to see what the actual wreath form was. I'll try to describe the rest of the wreath.

I'll divide the wreath into eigths to try and describe it better. On the middle of the left half there was a molded Santa face that was 1/8 the size of the wreath.

From the top of his head to almost the middle right half of the wreath, a rich red velvet was loosely sewn around the wreath with extra wrinkles and scrunch. This was the hat.

From the bottom of the face to almost the hat, there was a not quite yarn, but not quite a mop type rope sort of swagged around the wreath. There were a few braided pieces tucked in draped down.

I can't remember if anything was used for the ball on the cap or the white band above Santa's face. The more elaborate type pearlized balls and spindle type ornaments were used to fill in those places and were also stratigically placed elsewhere on the wreath.

I wish I had a picture. I did a Google image search and couldn't find anything similar.

I lied. I did find this. The hat is similar to what I described and so is the placement of the ornaments. The face and beard were nicer on the other wreath and of course, placed differently.

Hey, guess what? I went to a craft show today and guess what I bought? Yep, one of these wreath holders. I bought the smallest one because I want to use it on my buffet, but they had two taller sizes as well. Mine was $12.99. I thought I wanted a white one, but the smaller size was only in black. I love green: I could have every shade of green granite/marble/paint/curtains/ect in my whole house! I really like the costa esmeralda granite; there is a granite vendor here in dallas that lists slab on website by color and they have 140 pictures of green marble & granite slabs: there is a BLUE GREEN LABRADORITE that is green & so amazing; picture doesn't show all the Spectralite so well! I remember that one. My favorite is one I sent out one of the first years I was living on my own. It was very plain and simple. Had a simple sketch of Rudolph with his nose glowing. Then as you looked over you'd see his tail going over to an electrical outlet. I really enjoyed that card.

How do I make a living wreath base?

I just made a wreath like the one shown at the website above (Garden of MU) with the chicken wire. It worked beautifully. The chicken wire mesh shows through a bit, but as the plants fill out, it should be covered. If you wanted to, I'm sure you could tuck more moss in around the bare spots too. This was my first living wreath. I used sempervivum (hens & chicks) and several creeping sedum (dragon's blood and weiherstaner gold) and Stachys (lamb's ears). I've been tweaking it by tucking in a sprig here and there (pinched a couple of my neighbor's autum gold sedum-with her permission!) and a few jade leaves. I hope to try one with perennial herbs next--lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage. Maybe I'll throw in some mini basil too, knowing I'll have to replace it next year. I'm hooked!

You could make one.Craft stores have the santa heads all kinds some really beautiful.Thats how I got into making them I saw a beautiful dried flower wreath about 20 years ago.I looked at form saw the basics went home and made it.Now alot of wreaths I have hanging people rave over how beautiful they are.Its fun to play around till you get what you want .I made one with small ice skates,sled,lights,snowballs,and a word Let it snow.....My daughter made one then she liked mine so much.I cant post photo ,dont know how or I would.Just try yours may be prettier.Wouldnt cost 60 either.

Bulldinkie, I only learned to post pics a month or so ago. It is so much fun to be able to share pics of your creations on here. So nice to read everyone's compliments and to chat about how it was made and where you found materials, etc. I do a little painting, so most of my projects are over on the Painting forum gallery.
