Miele Speed Oven - does it work well as a regular oven?

I hope the question makes sense.

We currently don't have a microwave. One reason is not having enough counter space in our current kitchen and the other reason is that I am a little old-fashioned when it comes to cooking and prefer my food to be processed in a "regular" way. With the remodel we are planning (adding to the house and enlarging the kitchen somewhat) I decided that I definitely want a second smaller oven in addition to a standard 30" range. I would use the small oven for my every-day cooking for our family of four and would use the large one less often when cooking for a company or a large batch of something. My husband really wants to have a microwave though but only for quick reheating, melting etc., he is not really a cook. So as a result, I am looking at the Miele Speed Oven because, in addition to the combined mode, it is supposed to function as a stand-alone oven as well as a stand-alone microwave. It is very expensive IMO but it is the only one I found that can be used in all three modes so it sounds like a great choice for us.

So a question to the owners of this oven, do you use it as a regular oven, with and without convection? Does it work as well as their other wall ovens? Would you recommend it?

Also, I've been reading that cleaning is an issue with this oven due to its interior surface not being flat. So if you have one, how do you clean it? It is also a big factor for me because I am a busy working mom and looking for convinience in my appliances as well.

Doesn't the GE Advantium work in all three modes as well?

I did consider the Advantium initially. But was told by appliance salespeople that the Advantium still cooks with the halogen light even when used without the microwave. The KitchenAid speed oven also uses some kind of light I believe. So I don't consider that to be a "regular" oven.

Now, beeing honest, there is no specific information that I am aware of that would make it to be "bad for you" to cook with the lights. But I don't feel completely comfortable with it just yet for some reason.

Thanks for the response, Anthony, sorry if I sounded a bit harsh, but I would really like to see Baver get some help. Have you heard anything about a software update for these ovens?. Several folks have inquired about it on GW, and one would think a dealer would have a better chance of "Getting the Latest Scoop" than just one of us "Common Folks" (Just Kidding) but I think you get my drift? As I posted before, I am a very happy Miele DW owner. I started studying their ovens a number of years ago, as All I saw on GW were positive post about Miele ovens--- "it's pretty much in a class by itself and worth paying double for", etc etc.In fact, "To Me", Exceptionally Positive. Being as I'm a retired "Techie", Electronic Engineer, That got my curiosity up, and I started investigating a lot of sources for Miele Oven info, reviews, etc etc. I also compared 3 of them "in person", to a different oven. The other oven had glide out racks, huge window in door, Great big display I could read without glasses etc etc, (The Miele didn't at that time),so I just couldn't quite understand why the Miele was worth 2x the other oven. Anyway, now you know why my interest in the oven, and I like for folks to see both sides of the story. Hopefully those that bought will experience the same experience as your customers!!! Cheers Gary

We installed a Miele Speedoven in 2012 and have no regrets. It is in a wall cabinet at counter height and is used all the time. It heats up very fast for baking allowing us not to use our 36" oven when not needed. It microwaves, bakes, and broils with all types of combinations of those heating choices. The drawbacks are the price and you need a 220v line to power it. The quality is excellent and have not seen another oven that can do what this does.

1. If you search in the Appliances forum, you'll find a number of posts from one guy who has the Sharp, and sells them, and thinks they're terrific. 2. Lots have the Advantium (inc. me, but I have the Monogram Pro 240 version). Plenty of info about that, and the OTRs in the Appliance forum too. I love my Advantium. I'm not so enamored of speed cooking, but it's a truly excellent microwave, and works very well in oven mode. It works fine in speed mode as well, but I have yet to find things that I wouldn't rather spend the extra half hour on to do the old fashioned way. If I had X number of minutes to get the kids to practice, I'm sure the speed mode would be my best friend. 3. Yes, consensus is the Breville is the best toaster oven. More info about that in Appliances too. :) I have the Gaggenau combi-steam. The amount of steam escaping really isn't a big issue, though I suppose it might be if you had a uberairtight house, or high humidity. I'm not sure you need the toaster oven except for actually making toast, or a lot of family members all making different things at once. I have a conventional oven, combi-steam and Advantium, and keep a toaster oven in the small appliances drawer for toasting bagels, et al. When we take it out, we put it on the island, handy to the breakfast seating. I use one of the smaller ovens (both the Advantium and combi- do convection oven mode) if I need a small oven, never the toaster oven. Though the Breville is supposed to be a very good oven.

You can never have enough ovens. We have a 30" oven in addition to a 24" CSO and a 24" SpeedOven (incidentally, this is a wonderful combination). And still, there has been at least one meal, when I had to add a fourth improvised oven by using the gas grill on the deck. I also had to use a portable warming chest, and had to prepare a careful schedule for when to use which appliance. But then, I was cooking multiple courses for a gathering of more than 100 guests. Realistically though, 99% of the time, the combination of those two ovens should be enough. You might just have to do a little bit of planning on the rare occasions that you make huge amounts of food. But if budget is flexible, adding the SpeedOven wouldn't hurt. It's a good oven in its own right, and it can always serve as a great overflow option, when things get really tight. Is it mandatory? No, not at all? Will you enjoy having bought it? Yes, probably. It's a convenient luxury, if you regularly cook a lot.

The Sharp m/w convection can be used as m/w, mix, or regular convection. I used to have one in a previous house and used it as my main oven in the summer because we didn't have air conditioning in the kitchen. It would be much less expensive than the Miele.

Don't know about the others, but I love my Miele Speed Oven. I've had it for 6 months now and use it as a microwave (rarely) and on convection broil (more often). Works great and I've had no issues cleaning it. It's small, but I can get a large enough dish in for my purpose.

Histokitch, thank you very much for that information, I will definitely check the Sharp oven.

madcow, I'd love to hear more about the Miele. Have you used other oven functions or just the convection broil?
Is it easy to switch between the MW and oven and Speedcook?
Also, what do you use to clean it?

I have used the bake function, but tend to stick mostly to baking in my AGA. The only thing I really need is the broil and occasionally the mw. No issues with switching. It's pretty intuitive. I haven't read the manual yet and haven't had any issues.

I just clean it by heating a pan of water in it to steam off all the burnt on stuff and then giving it a quick wipe. Works well for me.
