Finish on Custom vs. Semi Custom Cabs
Comments (0)Ok, so I've started to get cabinet quotes. I'm doing white painted (no glaze) cabinets. I live in CA where we can no longer use oil based paint. So, I have the option to go with custom, but they would have to be painted with latex with a water based polyuthernathne (sp???) on top. So my question is how long would I expect to have the custom cabinet paint finish last??? We are not neat freaks but do have white latex painted cabinets in the office and laundry room that seem to hold up fine. Of course they don't get the use the kitchen would....See MoreWhy should I choose Custom cabinets over Semi-custom?
Comments (24)The lines between custom and semi-custom have become increasingly blurred. Used to be that custom meant you could get any wood specie you want, in any door style you want, in any color or finish choice you want. Many smaller, local builders call themselves custom, but in many cases you can get "more custom" work from brands that call themselves semi-custom. Showplace will build custom configured cabinets (you draw it, they build it), or you can modify a standard cabinet to the 1/16" -- they also offer custom painted finishes, but they call themselves semi-custom because you must live with the styles and species they offer. The best advise is to research your options and, as others have said, make a good product-service-installation value decision based on what is most important to you. It is always most helpful also to talk with friends, family, co-workers, etc. and see if they, or someone they know, have done a project and could make a recommendation. Here is a link to a planning guide that is helpful. Admittedly, the content eventually moves toward Showplace offerings, but much of the early content is viable regardless of the brand you choose. Here is a link that might be useful: Cabinet Planning Workbook...See MoreHelp with Custom vs Semi Custom
Comments (8)Kraftmaid offers reduced depth and increased depth as a construction modification, your KM desinger at HD just isn't plugging that into the design (or the cost). Do not rely on a big box designer to know what he/she is talking about. Some do know (I know a few of them) how to design a good kitchen but many don't. When dealing with a big box designer, you need to vet your own design. If you're looking at Kraftmaid, go to a stand-alone Kraftmaid or Merillat dealership (Merillat Masterpiece is made in the same factory as Kraftmaid, offers the same styles and finishes, often with the same name). Talk to the designer there if there's not an independent kitchen designer in your area. It's the installation that makes or breaks a kitchen, new construction or remodel. A cabinet dealership can't mess up on too many installations without word getting out and business falling off. The designers at my showroom have been with us for 20 and 25 years respectively. They both participate in yearly continuing education and are very familiar with the products we sell. It has to do with experience and knowing the cabinet line just as much as it does having design degrees, like our designers do....See Moresemi-custom built-ins/bookcases vs custom
Comments (2)Form and function so they are bookcases there is the function as for form what do you want . An idea of your style where they are going all kinds of info is needed to answer the question. My first question to my clients is what are you wanting to display and how much space do you need to do so. I actually love the Besta system from Ikea with some display, some storage and a great place to mount the TVat the proper viewing height and IMO a decnet price for an amazing looking unit. The way they are you can get an almost custom look and perfectly designed for what you need....See MoreUser
