New freezer -- Energy Star vs. manual defrost?
Comments (7)Sorry to hear about the the fridge and wish you luck with the replacement. Does North Carolina have a lemon law for appliances? If not, then, hopefully, the E-Lux warranty will get you replacement. In case you go back to considering an upright freezer, I can give you my experience on electrical cost increase from going from a s small chest freezer to a larger self-defrosting upright. I replaced a 5 cu. ft. Whirlpool manual-defrost chest freezer with a 14 cu. ft. Frigidaire FFU14 upright (very similar to the Lowe's version you are considering). With a Kill-a-Watt meter, I figured out that my old chest freezer used around 270 kWh per year while the new upright has been using about 440 kWh. I figure the net extra cost per year for me has run a little under $20 per year. So, not much extra utility cost. Of course, power consumption is partly a function of how full the freezer is and where you keep it. Mine is in the basement which holds a pretty steady at around 60F over the year. Placed the freezer in a garage that is hot for five or six months of the year, and keep it only half full, your cost could be a few dollars higher. One thing about my FFU14 is that it's compressor and fans run frequently and make a fair amount of fan and motor noise. THe Energy Star implementation is abasically to use smaller fans and motors which use less power even though they run more frequently. Trouble is, those smaller components can be annoyingly noisy, at least on the Frigidaire version that I have. This probably will not be a problem with the freezer out in the garage in your case, but it is a problem for me with the freezer in my basement. Chest freezers are a good deal quieter,...See MoreMarvel and U-line undercounter fridges, any likes or dislikes?
Comments (3)We have a U Line Echelon ust installed a month or so ago. So far we're quite happy. It looks good, with a custom panel surrounding the glass portion of the door. The capacity is good, with two racks for wine bottles and three shelves for cans etc. Runs relatively quietly--for perspective, louder than our Therm columns, which are incredibly quiet, but about the same as the Miele Excella DWs when they run. Dislikes: the plastic inside is not the most luxurious stuff I've seen, metal would have been nice but that's why it was less than the SZ I presume. Overall a good choice for us to date. BTW: one of the biggest reasons we chose it was an earlier GW post on customer service. Definitely read this thread, it's near inspirational! Comments (8)Manual it will be. I agree, Dave, that automatic just seems like it would wear out faster due to bouncing back and forth during the defrost cycle. The more an electrical gadget has on it, the more it has to go wrong. Annie, the defrosting and refreezing of the freezer part of the side by side has always bothered me. There's nothing I can do about it except not put anything in it that I feel that would hurt too much. I'm sure over a long time of storage, it would definitely break down the quality of the food in there. Morz8, yes, I've already started my seeds for broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and will be starting more tonight. I plan to have a large garden this year. Most will be canned, but a lot are not suitable for canning plus I want to make sure I have room for meats and fish in the freezer. Even though there is only one in this family now, I plan to make sure I can put up as much as I'll want and need for as much of the next year as possible. My freezer is also off in a little cubby behind my back mud room and against an outside wall. We had originally planned to put a door to a garage there, but we never built the garage and the diminsions were perfect for the upright. It is cooler there and we never had to defrost it more than twice a year and, like you, had the defrosting down to about the same length of time. One thing DH did was attach the hose from the bottom of the freezer to a pipe that delivered it to another pipe going out so no messing with shallow pans of freezing water which I had to do for too many years. I'm doing well. I think the fact that Darrell was so ill for so long and in so much pain and now he's at peace and no longer in pain has helped me accept it more. There was also so much support from friends, both in person and on the net, that helped. During the four days before Darrell passed, the last of the transplant patients that we were with at the same time as the transplants were performed, passed away and my very close friend in Florida unexpectedly lost the love of her life. The friend in Florida and I shared a lot of support for each other. Everyone here on Gardenweb helped a lot. They are my Gardenweb family and I feel like I've known all of you forever. Thank you. Comments (20)Erica - hey there! We decided not to get one in the end; too much money for what it would do for us. I would totally consider installing a whole bank of them under the countertops if I was loaded, though, as the concept is excellent. I just wish there was some more competition from affordable domestic brands to keep the pricing more reasonable. I went back through the other replies and only one person responded who installed one - all the others were speculative, not real life experiences (typical Houzz). You could try tagging cheztaki who was the only respondent who actually has one, maybe? I'd say if it looks like a great option for you, get it, but make sure it's not dead stock with an old warranty or anything, just in case. And if you do get it, let us know how it works out, and in the meantime I'll keep buying lottery tickets :)...See Moredavidro1
