crafting just for fun vs taking orders

After reading AdellaÂs post it made me thinkÂI donÂt do craft shows but occasionally sell things if people want to buy them, overall I make things to give as gifts. I guess that is why I craft, it relaxes me, I enjoy it. I love the way I feel when I finish a project sitting there looking at it and I really like to see someoneÂs face when I give them what I have made. I guess I consider when I am crafting as "me time".

When I take something into work to show my friends and they want to pay me to make them one, I tend to not want to make the project. It seems to take the enjoyment out of crafting.

Example I have been crocheting scarves for Christmas presents. I canÂt wait to see what each one looks like after I have finished. My DB and his girlfriend came over last week and she had a fit over them. She offered to buy the yarn and pay me to make her several. I donÂt know exactly how many she wanted but my stomach flip flopped. I think it is stressfulÂ I have to get these done- will she like them-I have to DO this. Some of you may remember the crocheted flip flops I posted. I had a lot of orders for them. It drove me CRAZY! I was so relieved to get all of those done.

I have thought about putting some things in a show, and if I ever do they will be completed projects when I put them in so that shouldnÂt be stressful. I donÂt mind a bit when someone buys something I have already made, it just stresses me out when I HAVE to make something.

Does anybody else feel this way?

I hate to take orders, I'd so much rather somebody buy something that I've already done. Then the pressure isn't on. Orders are a job and crafting is fun!

Taking orders - having pressure to complete a certain number of items, perfectly, in a given time - sure takes the fun out of it.

A few years back I was making those neck coolers with the water-absorbing crystals in them just to give to friends. Then a family member wanted me to make over 50 of them to take on a mission trip to Haiti in just a few weeks. I just hated figuring out how much the materials cost for one item, and then of course I didn't want to charge her for my time, not only the actual construction, but all the time spent shopping for the materials, and then the cost of the gas to drive all over buying the stuff, not to mention the cost of shipping them to her. I spent hours and hours making them (to perfection!), and disliked it more and more each hour I was bent over my sewing table! LOL!! Haven't made any since!

One way I got around taking orders for painted shirts was to offer to teach a class (for free, of course - haha!) on how to do a given project. Each student paid a modest fee for supplies (usually paints), and brought her own shirt, but I ended up supplying lots of 'tools' for them to use... palette plates, brushes, rulers, patterns, cardboard inserts, wax paper, tape, etc. But we always had lots of fun, and I think they ended up with a much better sense of all the hours and concentration on the task that go into making something crafty. Then we'd all wear our almost-look-alike shirts on the same day and get lots of questions and compliments. Fun!

I have Crystal and they look nice, but I would absolutely not pay retail for them. I was able to buy them for a little above cost from my lumber yard. They gave me the catalog that showed their list prices and they are beyond ridiculous. the markup is almost laughable. I just don't feel they are worth anymore than I paid for them. I don't know anything about the other cabinets you mentioned so it would be impossible for me to know how Crystal compares.

I think you're prices are too low. You'd be lucky to make a profit on somethings. I just bought 2 peaches for $3 the other day. If you're making fruit pies and cobblers, I would definitely charge more for those. And,if your cookies have chips and/or nuts and butter, you'll be lucky to break even. Plus, you may have to plan on some stuff not selling. I would take preorders for the pies and cobblers (even cakes) and sell them whole for twice of what you paid to make them. People like being able to take bigger stuff home to other family members. If it's a fundraiser and a good cause, I would pay a lot more for homemade goods. I would price any individual item at at least a dollar or more. And, if you put enough fluffy icing on a cupcake you can charge big bucks for it! Just make sure to price stuff so that you're actually making a big enough profit to make it worth the effort. I'd hate to see you slaving and baking for 3 days to come out $7 ahead. How about doing some big iced cinnamon rolls one morning (or some other breakfast - bakery good)? I would bet you could charge a lot for those. People love eating with their morning coffee and will probably pay a little more for a treat then since it seems more like a meal instead of just a snack. Good luck; let us know how it goes.

Wallycat, I keep getting those messages also. It started about two weeks ago, I think. Fortunately for me, my first post isn't actually posting like yours is. I've seen a spate of this type of re-posting recently.. Maybe a GW glitch? Perhaps someone should contact Tamra? Kompy--I received quotes on my black walnut island counter with sink from Boos, Craft-Art, and a couple of other places. In the end, I was nervous about the exactness of the sink cutout, placement, etc when constructing something from such a distance. I searched out and found a local woodworker who frequently makes counters. He took my prep sink to his shop in order to get the cutout perfectly perfect, and he did the install himself. Adding my runnels and an up-mounting of sorts with the sink so it wasn't undermounted as deeply as it would have been and hence making a deep sink even deeper, my total cost with install was just a bit less than my highest internet quote.

Do tile orders take stagger into account? Or just square footage?

That is a good point John. We used a 24" x 24" tile in our shower and the calculation were a bit too conservative. This porcelain tile was a bit finicky on the cut edges and we ended up with zero spares. Not a problem till they screwed in the new grab bar and cracked the tile. No more tiles were available from Walker Zanger, but they found 2 loose ones at the warehouse and shipped them to me, so now I just have one spare tile if we ever have a problem. Much better to have overage than no spares at all ...

I used to sell my crafts, either at craft shows or to order. These days I make them strictly to give away and am finding that much more enjoyable--I can spend the time, money and energy on it that I please and it is much more relaxing and less stressful that way. One of my friends did request some knitted dishcloths when she found out I was knitting again--her stipulations were any color, any time, any design. That's been fun--when I get some done, I mail them to her! I've gotten to choose colors, etc. so it's about the same as making them to give away.

I stopped taking orders ... it put so much stress on me - I couldn't stand it ! PLUS --- because I do stained glass - people got fussy when the one they saw was a teeny bit different than the original. I can't make the same thing EXACTLY twice ! Glass has different colors & tones - sometimes my cutting and soldering is just a hair off ...I'm tired of people pointing it out to me ! Boy - could I ever vent !! If they want mass produced stuff - let 'm buy Chinese !

Maybe if you do some special craft and someone wants to buy it, is there something you can trade with--like a barter system. I could never craft to sell, because my stuff is not good enough. I do appreciate some crafts more than others, especially if I had done it in the past. I love to learn all types of crafts then go on to learn something else.
Kathy, I love homemade items like your stain glass, especially if they are different than the original. That is crafting, not mass producing. When I travel I love to look for that different homemade item, especially if I can meet and talk to the person.

I used to do a lot of orders and it got to be too stressful and more like a job....took all the fun out of crafting....I liked the money it generated but after awhile even that wasn't worth it all....much rather craft for pleasure again!
