Canned Poppyseed Filling

Do you use Solo Poppyseed filling?

What do you use it for?

As a rule I love poppyseed.

Poppyseed-Almond muffins,

Lemon Poppyseed muffins.

Love it baked on and into,

breads, rolls, & bagels, crackers, etc.

So, when I decided to make Rugelach this year

(for the fist time)

I bought 2 cans of the poppyseed filling.

Had the dough all rolled out,

Opened the first can,

And with high expectations, tasted it.

YUCK! ! ! ! !

Gagged, spit it out,

and pitched the whole can,

Then found some preserves to use instead.

I do still have one unopened can.

Does the taste of it change when it is baked into something?

If not, any suggestions of what to do with it?

Or should I just pitch it, too.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I really do hate to waste good food,

But I'm not sure this stuff should be considered food.

Personally, I stick to making my own poppy seed filling, which is actually pretty simple to do, in order to control how sweet I want the filling to be, as well as the type of sweetener I want to use in the filling. I use a Porkert Seed Mill for grinding the seeds, but you can grind poppy seeds in a coffee/spice grinder.

Solo brand poppyseed filling is a staple for a cookie made during a Jewish festival called 'Purim', this year in March. Many CFers have recipes for 'hamentaschen' cookies.

This is one recipe I used last year for hamentaschen, Joan Nathan's:

2/3 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
2.5 - 3 Cups sifted AP flour
1 tsp baking powder
dash salt

Cream shortening with sugar. add egg and continue creaming until smooth. Add vanilla, stir in the sifted flour/baking powder and salt until a ball of dough is formed. Chill for 2-3 hurs.

Preheat oven to 375.

Roll out 3/4 of the dough on a lightly floured board to 1/8 or desired thickness, cut into 2 inch circles. Fill with 1 teasoon poppy seed filling (or your choice, I use brownie dough) and fold the circle into a three cornered cookie. Bake on a well-greased cookie sheet (I use pre-cut parchment paper) for 10-16 minutes until the tops are golden. Note: I egg wash my hamentaschen.

Rusty, if this product doesn't appeal to you, you can bring it over and donate it to a local synagogue, I'm sure they would appreciate it for their baking.

Don't forget that MWs need venting room all the way around them for safe operation. Don't restrict that and create a safety hazard for the sake of looks! Check those specs. I'll think you'll find that 2" of space all the way around is needed by most. Some countertop MW manufacturers have MWs with "trim kits" designed to surround the MW and create proper venting at the same time. GE for one. If you want a built in look, look at the specs for those MWs and the trim kits and give those specs to your KD and cabinet maker. I think you'll find you have very little actual usable room left over after a trim kit is installed. They usually fit a 30" framed cabinet. Since you have inset, I think you'll have around 5" left over for "something".

OK it's a moot point now but for future reference and other readers... Yes the definition of clean fill in many places (statutorily in my state) is clean soil, rock, gravel, sand, brick, concrete, but with NO decomposable content such as wood and roots. If you get that when you ask for clean fill soil you are really getting 'miscellaneous crap fill'. And yes soil will settle particularly if it's not compacted when put down. Probably far more than what a few chunks of wood would lead to. Best to compact the subsoil in layers less than a foot thick. Topsoil you don't want compacted quite as much but it does need to be firmed a bit to make a solid and smooth surface that won't settle into bumps and dips.

I soak about a 1/4 cup fresh or, this time of year, frozen raspberries in 1/4 cup warm AC vinegar for an hour-ish. (microwave warm). I add a pinch of black pepper and fresh thyme when I have it or dried summer savory in the winter. Some lemon zest I keep whole halves in the freezer. (or frozen Meyer lemon). Muddle the berries, a fork works, and press through a mesh strainer into a jar, then add 1/4 cup oil of choice. Shake. Sometimes a tsp of mustard, sometimes and/or non-fat greek yogurt. Never sugars with fruit dressings. Same with dried cranberries but they need a longer warm soak. (I don't mesh strain dried soaked cranberries...no seeds. Nice whole in the salad) I like the natural sugars from fruit. Otherwise too sweet but we are that 1% that do not care for sweet-sweet. *I also don't buy into the 'golden rule' that salad dressings need so much oil. We like 50/50 vinegar/oil. And not that much of it. I'll use my fat calories in yummy blue cheese.

I got to thinking about a friend's recipe and couldn't find it, so I texted her and asked for it. While looking I rediscovered an old, old recipe in my database for a really delicious salad with poppyseed dressing. Guess what I'm having for my dinner? Avocado/Grapefruit Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing Yield: 8 servings. 2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and sliced lengthwise into 1/4 inch slices 2 large red grapefruit, peeled, sectioned, and the white membranes removed Boston lettuce leaves, washed and chilled Poppy Seed Dressing 1/3 cup sugar 1 tsp. dry mustard 5 Tblsp white wine or champaign vinegar 1 tsp salt 1 cup vegetable oil (NOT olive oil) 1-1/2 tsp grated onion, drained on paper towel 2-1/2 tsp Poppy Seeds Arrange several slices of avocado and grapefruit on a bed of lettuce, alternating slices for color; chill. I use the Solo Poppyseed filling every year for kolache. Any leftover I spread on toast or eat with a spoon...yum!

Poppy seeds do taste nuttier when cooked/baked/toasted and that's probably what you like. The canned filling is extremely sweet and rich(but that's what I like).

If you do make your own, make sure the seed you buy is fresh, not rancid. Some stores will hang on to their stock a long time because it's generally not a fast seller. I've purchased some nasty stuff in the past because I didn't smell it before buying. And I've ruined some perfectly good seed by not storing it in the fridge.

I've used Solo poppyseed filling for making makowiec (poppyseed roll) many a time with no problem. Some of my older aunties would grind the seeds themselves as grainlady mentions and use honey as the sweetener. It might just be what you are used to--when I've purchased poppyseed roll at a grocery store, like Wegmans, it doesn't taste right since it just doesn't taste like mine. (or the aunties')

The only poppyseed filling available here has orange flavoured something (not sure if peel or juice) added to it and I don't care for it. Perhaps this is what rusty got?

Now I'm kind of wishing I hadn't been quite so quick
To toss the opened can.
Maybe if I'd saved it to taste a day or so later,
It might have tasted different to me.
From ya'lls responses,
I'm now thinking it might be an 'acquired taste'.

Anyhow, thanks for the recipe link, Grainlady.
I may get brave enough to try it one of these days.

Jessyf, hamentaschen is another one I want to try.
Thanks for that recipe.
The nearest synagogue is in a city 50 miles from here.
But I guess I could put an add on Freecycle,
Surely there is someone in this town
That is of the Jewish faith.
