Will removal of this plastic cause a leakage problem?

our masons put this sheet of plastic in the mortar above the water table around our house so that the mortar dropping from above didn't get all over the brick. since the house is still not done being bricked this plastic has been there for a few months. will removing it in the spring cause a gap under the mortar to let water creep in? can we squeeze mortar in there somehow to make a tighter seal? any thoughts?

Mortar is not waterproof; it's function is to support the bricks and bond them together.

Raking the joints back instead of tooling them encourages water to enter the cavity so obviously the designer was not concerned about excess water in the cavity. If the plastic doesn't go far enough into the brickwork to break the bond, the wall should function as designed.

Make sure the weeps at the bottom of the brickwork and the tops of openings are clear so water can get out. They should be checked once a year.

Ok. The mason told us this kind of joint was best to protect against water damage because it compresses the mortar. This is so frustrating! It's hard to know if they know what they're talking about
How do we check to make sure the weep holes are clear?

This thread opens with one of the most ludicrous yarns (no pun intended!) I've ever read on the internet. And I've been on the internet for a LONG time. A cup of alcohol, dissolved into even the small volume of water used in a front loader, is going to be reduced in concentration well below the threshold of flammability. EVEN if you just poured a cup of 91% isopropyl onto WET clothing, just before a spin cycle, I doubt the vapor pressure of the alcohol would ever get high enough to ignite if you placed a spark igniter IN the wash basin! This chart is for ethanol but it's probably similar for other simple alcohols. There's no way the concentration is such scenarios as the OPs was above 5% - or anywhere near it, So, the interior of the washing machine would have to have been >> 140F for spark ignition. https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ethanol-water-d_989.html They are gone now (probably a good thing) but for this scenario to take place as described a MUCH more flammable substance had to be involved, and probably more of it than a cup. Obviously, based on the traits that can cause 'laundry fires', there's always a way to safely remove organic solvents that are flammable. Anything with a high enough vapor pressure to form explosive mixtures with water, can be removed by just letting the clothes air out, outside, for a couple sunny days in summer. If your functioning nose doesn't smell anything anymore and you don't feel any oiliness, there isn't enough there anymore to cause a problem after wet laundering. I myself have spilled 4 cycle gasoline on jeans, probably over 1 cup, and safely laundered them. Letting the gasoline dry out, and then use a hot water wash cycle, standard laundry detergent, and TSP (as described in other threads here) to make sure the oil is emulsified and removed. (Ammonia would probably work almost as well) I smelled them before drying. No hydrocarbon smell left at all. That being said, if I had some completely ridiculous scenario like a pair of jeans that had been soaked in kerosene - a fuel that stinks but is slower to evaporate - I'd probably just throw them out.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. The door (and door jamb) was finished on all exposed surfaces. But not on the side butted up to the wall studs. It may straighten itself out. I opened up the wall yesterday. Took out slightly wet (definitely not soaked, mostly dry - just 'slightly wet or damp) insulation. Whole thing is my fault of course. Didn't get the plastic far enough down from the roof - so water dripped onto the door. And the top of the door was 'open' since I am making that area be taller... Noticed yesterday that the actual door jamb seems to be 'soft'. No longer believe it is true wood. This is a fiberglass door, purchased from HD; and the door jamb seems to possibly be some sort of particle board. Might have to replace the Jamb, or just plane it down; or possibly might replace the door. AAAARRRRAGGGGGG!! Not pleased with what I did... Anyway - removed drywall, removed insulation, and am hoping for the best. Got to go, since I have to finish the roof! Thanks again to you both.

When I ran into this problem: I cut out a hole in the cabinet back about 12 by 18" high. Doesn't need to be neat but stay 2" away from sides and bottom of cabinet. Cut off the drain pipe about 5" below the existing Tee connection. Glued on a new Tee. glued a ~6" piece of pipe and coupling to connect to the outside cleanout located at the top of the drain pipe. Cut a neat square piece of 1/4" birch plywood to cover the hole in the cabinet. sanded edges and spray can varnish job. and of course a hole for the new drain connection. Attached the plywood with 4 screws at the corners. Took about 1/2 day altogether. It's a little cramped working under the sink. Don't compromise on getting the sink you want just because it's a little work. It's very difficult (impossible?) to change an undermount sink later.

I guess I would not feel right if I did not add this important update, as someone else may need help down the line and who knows, maybe it will be useful for them. After thinking (and writing here) that all is OKAY after installing the Gorton size 6 vapor valve, it all worked for about 12 hours, and then the water trickling out of the pigtail issue reappeared, as it did with size D, size C and onwards. I just did not want to even try size 5 as I pretty much had enough. So out of frustration and desperation, I decided to put back on the same Taco 417-3 Vent: https://www.supplyhouse.com/Taco-417-3-Coin-Vent-11389000-p that I had on my baseboard before switching it out and installing a cheap-made size C purchased at a local Home Depot around 18 months ago. Again the reason why I did that 18 months ago is that suddenly there was no heat up into that baseboard and I did not understand about the flexibility (adjustability) of Taco fully as I do now. So, for the last 4 days (notice my silence here until now), I have had no issues. No leaks, the heat works just fine and there is no hissing or banging. It took a bit of an effort to find the right “opening level” on the Taco – the thing is so sensitive that an extra 3 millimeters turn on the adjuster could allow water to leak or 3 mm not enough, the valve would be too closed to let the steam in. But in the end, I think I finally have a eureka success moment. The bottom line, I have learned so much over the last year about this stuff (much thanks to people like you in this forum) and I just wish I would have given the Taco another chance sooner. But then again I have also learned that my PSI on the cut-in can be set to much lower than I had before (I went from 3 PSI -> 5 PSI down to 0.5 PSI -> 2.25 PSI) and still have everything work perfectly. Also, I increased the pitch on the baseboard by another .25 inch, and that never hurts for the return to work properly. I still can’t imagine why none of the 3 Gorton’s worked. You would think that size 6 would do it, but it leaked the MOST out of the three! That company is considered the golden standard of quality but I guess this was not a match to be had. A compressed mortar joint is certainly the best for weather resistance and would have a smooth steel tooled surface instead of being rough like yours. Also, the most weather resistant shape is "concave" instead of "raked" like yours. See the descriptions on Wikipedia linked below.

Brick joints for private residences are usually designed for appearance not weathering.

The mortar joint is not so important if the cavity and back-up wall was constructed properly. That is the real weather barrier; the brick acts like a screen.

When building a house, if you are not extremely knowledgeable about design and construction you must put your trust in the designer and builder; second guessing everything is a killer. If you find it difficult to turn the project over to the contractor you should hire a professional to represent you from beginning to end.

No matter how you rake mortar joints, they allow water through by capillary action.

Just like every other Portland cement based product.

The drainage plane is BEHIND the brick.

House wrap, tar paper, etc. prevent further penetration of liquid water.

While it is true that all mortar joints will allow water to enter the cavity the type of mortar and how the joint is tooled will make a substantial difference in the amount of water that enters the cavity.

Because the escape of water from the cavity depends so much on how clean the cavity is, the type of brick ties and how carefully they were installed, how well the cavity was flashed, and how good the weep holes are, it is best to minimize the amount of water entering the cavity.

There can be no disagreement regarding what kind of joint limits water in the cavity.

Not to derail from the OP but what about a dry stack? Then you don't have to worry about mortar at all but are there other problems if you do that?

We were discussing a masonry veneer cavity wall and what kind of mortar reduced water penetration. Leaving the mortar out would not only allow the maximum water penetration, it would be impossible to construct. You may be thinking of a thin-veneer simulated wall cladding adhered to the structure or a site retaining wall.
