anyone have a camera that they like?

Hi,
I need a new camera. I just want an easy Point and shoot digital camera but there are so many that I thought that I might just ask here and see if anyone has one that they can recommend.

Here's a round up of the current cream of the crop:
DPReview's Compact Cameras. They are excellent cameras, but perhaps more than you want to spend. I used to have an earlier version of the Canon S110, and it was fabulous.

I broke it, unfortunately, and got a Canon ELPH 110 HS as a quick & cheap replacement. It surprises me with decent image quality & versatility. It's tiny -- fits in purse or pocket. I thought I'd miss having a high end point & shoot but I'm happy enough with the ELPH.

Just got the Canon SX260 and loved it so much I bought my daughter one for Christmas. At 250-300 it's a bit pricey but worth it. I also got my SIL a Canon but it's one step higher than the 110. Bought it from Costco for about 150.00. Both camera's take wonderful pictures and I LOVE the video option on the 260. Mine is green and my daughters is the fushia red.

Joe's making a good point -- what focal length means has gotten a little confusing these days for the amateur photog with the advent of digital sensors in various sizes. Here's some more info: Focal length is the distance from the nodal point (center) of the lens to the film (sensor) when the lens is focused at infinity (the far horizon). Lenses come in three basic groups: short or wide angle, normal and long or telephoto. For any given camera the normal focal length lens is the diagonal of the film (sensor). 35mm film has a 46mm diagonal therefore the normal lens is 46mm (rounded up) 50mm. Focal length is related to angle of view which is likely what you're concerned about. Angle of view is a functon of focal length and the size of the film format. Simply put angle of view is how much the lens takes in. For what it's worth here's the math: Where V = angle of view, F = focal length, and N = length (width) of the negative: V = arctangent((N/2)/F)*2. Short lenses have a wide angle of view -- they take in more information. Long lenses have a narrow angle of view -- they take in considerably less information. Consider the two sunset photos below. The first was taken with a normal lens (45mm for 35mm film). The second was taken from the same camera location with a telephoto lens (135mm for 35mm film). Notice how the second sunset is just an enlargement of the central section of the first with most of the first photo cropped away. The photo below of the cross was taken with a wide angle lens (24mm for 35mm film). Notice how the shape of the cross appears distorted in the photo. The cross does not taper up yet in this photo the base appears larger than the top. This is because the camera is so very close to the cross. The human eye from the camera position would not be able to see the entire cross like this camera lens does. Standing there you would have to scan up and down the cross. Wide angle lenses (especially when used in close quarters) can show us aspects of the world our eyes do not show us and these photos can appear odd at times. Focal length is related to perspective. Perspective is a function of where you put the camera. Camera placement determines the apparent 3D relationship of objects in your photo. If you place yourself close to the objects in your photo the 3D space between them will appear emphasized and even exaggerated (common with wide angle lenses). If you place yourself far from the objects in your photo the 3D space between them will appear de-emphasized and even suppressed (common with telephoto lenses). This begs the question: Is there a correct focal length that will show viewers of my photos the scene the way it looked to me when I was there taking the picture? Yes there is; for a 35mm film camera that lens focal length would be 75/80mm. If that was all too esoteric and you're still with me here's a few tips for how to best use the different types of lenses. Short: expansive landscapes, tight places, buidlings and architecture, crowds and street photography. Normal: snapshots, family and friends. Steph--Don't have that particular model but recently got the Sony DSC-H3. A lot of the features are the same. I've got to say, I really do like it. Simple to use and takes wonderful pictures. The steady shot is great for those of us that are "shaky". I haven't found anything yet that I don't like.

Here you can find a review of this camera. http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/hp735.htm I find a digital slr, like my Pentax ist*D better for pictures of my garden, but the HP sounds like a good camera to start with and learn about taking pictures of your garden. You can decide after using it for awhile if the HP is all you need or want to move up to a better camera. I hope you enjoy taking pictures of your garden as much as I do, taking pictures of the flowers and wildlife in mine.

I am no help as I prefer the real thing but love the look and hope you get what you are looking for. I will say i shamed my uncle one time in stopping him from putting vinyl siding on our Shingle Sawmill!! There should be a law against thst, but even still we BOUGHT cedar shingles for it as we never ran it much. We valued our fingers too much. For those that do not know, in running them you put your hands on the side of the spinning sawblade making it very uncomfortable. The trim saw is where most fingers are cut off though. A very dangerous sawmill to operate.

Lukki my DD has the same camera in the hot pink. We both took pics at a concert and hers were 1000% better, and she had the video, too. I recently broke the lens on my camera, so I'm searching for a new one myself. I was thinking of a DSLR, but I've never used an SLR camera, so wondered if it would be more than I could handle.

These all look like good options for me.

Don't get a Sony cybershot wx80 if you want something relatively easy to use. In vulgar parlance, it sucks. I bought it as a replacement for my 2002 Nikon coolpix which is so old my iPhone 5 has better resolution . .... The old Nikon still takes better pictures than the phone OR the Sony.

We bought DD that same camera linked above for Christmas. At the time it was on sale for $199. My DH, who is a camera geek, is very impressed with the camera. DD has been enjoying it and it is very easy for her to use (she's just turning 12 this week).

Pesky, Unless you know a lot about cameras and how to use them, I would save your money. I have an older SLR with a couple different lenses and have never really used it. Then I got a step down from an SLR for work (needed the zoom) but it's so bulky and not the easiest camera to keep with you for those spur of the moment experiences. The SX260 in my opinion has the best of several worlds. It has the zoom, it takes great videos and has a strong flash for dark rooms. It's loaded with a lot of popular feature but contrary to the SLR's it is more user friendly. The only thing it's missing that I wish it had was a wide angle shot which many cameras come with. The SX260 only offers stitching. I also like that the battery is a rechargeable.

For point and shoot I have a Pansonic Lumix DMC-FH24. Bought it for the 8x optical zoom, 16 megapixel, lithium ion battery, large screen, small footprint and multi-modes. At the time it was about $120.00. Well, we bought it for my daughter but I feel it's a great walk around camera and I use it all the time. Fits in my pocket and takes great pictures. I also have a Canon 50D DSLR as photography is a hobby. The Lumix is small enough to take everywhere and takes great pictures. I highly recommend looking at it.

My DH has the Canon SX260 and it is wonderful. I bought it for him for Xmas. I like the 20X zoom on it.
