You can also get half steps (number with dot next to it), yielding 23 power levels on that unit. Look at the end of the list of programs in the manual for how to do it. I love the half steps. They give fine control.

The brand of the hood doesn't matter. The capture area and cfm matter, and so does make up air (air to replace what is sucked out).

I'd choose the Futuro given your specs. I don't know the brand, personally, but it's as well known among hoods as Miele. The larger size, bigger fan, less noise and lower price all sound good.

There is some small consideration of matching if a hood is designed to go with a range--but that mostly happens with custom, rather than stock. I've never seen a hood that actually matches an induction cooktop, except for the badge. There are some people who like it when there's only one badge in the kitchen (I do that by removing them altogether.) Most users, however, prefer function, and if they're going to match the hood to something, it's the cabinetry.

I'd take the extra 2 grand and treat myself to something nice.

Without looking up these particular hoods, I will just comment that the design of the hood must facilitate both capture and containment. This means that when expanding effluent reaches the hood, what gets in the hood aperture stays in the aperture and is expelled to the outside.

Decorative hoods that do not provide a capture volume area below the filter area can potentially lose the effluent that reaches them. A useful question to ask onself is: In view of the successful functionality of typical commercial hoods, does the candidate residential hood (with vastly nicer aesthetics) deviate very much from the commercial in its underlying design, and if so, is there a reason for me to believe that its design compensates in some way that will make it successful at capture and containment under my operating conditions. (Higher cfm per square foot of aperture might be one way to compensate. Eating only catered food might be another.)

A classic GW post. "Please help me decide on...." But before a full discussion can ensue, we get the OP "actually I already decided, thanks anyway."

But, to pile on a bit here, and to be more blunt than kas was, what a great example of a hood chosen by a designer, rather than someone who cooks. If I were to design a hood that was as ineffectual as possible, these would be good starting points. These flat "plate" designs drive me crazy. The lack of vertical containment walls at the edges of the hood guarantee that half of the effluent temporarily trapped by the horizontal "plate" will drift laterally back into the kitchen instead of being captured by the blower. Of course you could further compromise the effectiveness by doing an island, rather than wall, installation, and mounting it excessively high over the range. Compared to those factors, 2'' of extra width will be irrelevant (and FWIW, the Futuro gives up FOUR inches in depth).

In the end, it's all good. Hoods can be installed for functional, or decorative purposes. If it's clear that the latter is the priority, then these hoods likely fit the bill esp given the choice of cooktops. If the goal had been performance, however, these are not the optimal choice.

Hey doc - you could slope/slant the "plate" upwards to make the capture area even less effective, but cooler looking.

I agree with Clinresga - how annoying is it for someone to post, so then I take the time to look at the links s/he posted, and then the OP says "never mind". Of course, it's the same mindset that would choose EITHER of those ineffectual hoods. While the Miele is crazy at $4100, the OP is still throwing out the window the $2200 (plus installation) for the Futura.

I am fairly certain the OP will not be coming back to read the responses. For anyone else looking at hoods, and opening this thread, please don't choose one of the ones the OP shows, or a hood in that style. As already mentioned, those flat hoods don't contain smoke/grease/steam the way a canopy hood does. The Futura isn't deep enough either, as Clinresga pointed out. And the mesh filters - a 2nd choice compared to baffle filters. I note the Futuro hood requires a 6" diameter duct; I doubt the OP or the designer thought about the size of the exhaust duct, but 6" is just too small for the 940 cfm spec of this hood. That means a lot of noise, as those 940 cfms push through that 6" duct. Typically a hood with 600 cfms or more needs an 8" diameter duct.

Oh, and the glass? A PITA. Will show every single tiny splatter.

The OP posted his/her query on the 13th of December. The last reply to him came from Kas on the 14th.

Now, if the chronology of the posts in the thread is accurate, following that reply, this post fell off the front page and DID NOT reemerge until the OP came back over two weeks later.

He stopped by as a courtesy to let us all know his decision and to THANK the members who were good enough to reply in a timely manner.

For those so intent upon excoriations, may I suggest in the future that you avoid embarrassment and the need for apologies by looking at the dates of the posts and replies prior to making asses of yourselves.

@mojavean: while your characterization might be agreed with by others, I want to take the time to better explain my thought process. I have been a huge GW fan for years. I've read a ton. learned a ton, and posted a fair amount. Some of that stuff might have even been useful to some.

What I would point out is that GW thrives as a community that shares a conversation. The life blood of this process is a two-way interchange: one person needs information. He/she posts a question. Others with useful information respond, not for fame or money, but because they genuinely have an interest in helping. Moreover, most posters, and I am sure you'd agree, love to have others chime in with their thoughts. The best threads are the ones in which a lively, ongoing, multi-person interchange goes on for days and days. Opinions are offered, debated, disagreed with, and all involved learn something.

The worst threads are ones in which the OP seems to lose interest. You'll see others respond to their post and attempt to help out but no response is forthcoming. Even if it's just to say "thanks," GW etiquette really asks that you at least respond with a "thanks."

And since you're concerned that we didn't look at the dates of the posts, I'd suggest that perhaps you should do the same? The OP posted on 12/13. He/she got three responses within one day, including two detailed responses from two long-time GW posters who are some of (nah, kas IS) the most knowledgeable folks on this Forum regarding ventilation.

The OP then proceeded to 1) not respond for TWO weeks 2) ignore the questions and advice given by pillog and kas and 3) reveal that he/she already bought a hood apparently based on the "extra cash I saved."

In my occasionally humble opinion, if you are going to post a question, you are obliged to see if there is a response, and to indicate your appreciation. "It feel off the front page" is not an excuse. The reason it fell off the front page is because the OP ignored the thread for two weeks. And if you're going to ignore the advice anyway, why post in the first place?

So, yes, I did look at the dates of the post, and if you were reading more carefully, you would have realized that.

In turn, he was advised to "buy the Futuro" by both Plllog and weedmeister. Kas gave him no specific recommendation, implying that he had not looked at the links.

Other than that, no further discussion ensued for over two weeks. So tell me, how long must an OP await further guidance from the oracle before making a purchase? How many awkward, solicitous, prods must an OP provide to satisfy you?

You complain that the OP did not follow advice. But he did. He bought the Futuro. You claim he did not say thank you. But he did. His post from the 30th specifically thanked the board.

There is no requirement for posters on this board to engage in effusive replies to every post. If anything, that kind of behavior gets annoying after a while. There is no requirement for posters to modify their designs based upon the proclivity of a few members to insist that every kitchen be ventilated like a Bob's Big Boy. The guy got his answer, acted on it, and thanked us. That is sufficient. If you had a point to make, you had every opportunity to make it back when the question was asked in the middle of December. The fact that you missed the topic and let it slide off the front page is not the fault of the OP and ANY implication on your part that it is is simply false.

@kas and antss: I am not so sure that the Miele slanted hood is really that terrible an idea if one is intent upon using some kind of modernist design.

When contrasted with "flat plate" or mildly concave designs such as this one, the slanted approach actually provides a larger surface area to the shroud, since it is essentially positioned as the hypotenuse of the triangle.

The slant has no smaller effective aperture than competing flat plates. The variance is in the time that the gasses strike the aperture, earlier at the bottom, later at the top. And though later impact means more time to plume, and escape, I can still see how something like this might work okay. Apparently, so do others.

Please note that I am NOT saying something like this will serve as well as one of those stainless-steel parachutes they have at McDonalds. But it does get the leading edge of the hood out of your face, which is a design plus in my book. I would be willing to bet that the hood could perform okay in a residential setting under typical requirements for such installations, unless of course one demands to never smell what one is cooking, in which case, carry-out is called for no matter what the hood selection may be. ;-)

@mojavean: OK, we'll agree to disagree. I just find these kinds of threads to be less interesting, and useful. And the OP ended up missing the best part of his/her own thread!

But...if you don't see the fundamental flaw in the slanted flat plate hood, then you need to review the basics. Capture and containment are fundamental to ventilation. That is why the Monroe commercial hood you cite is not relevant to your argument. The Monroe is essentially a standard boxed-in hood liner. It has vertical containment walls on all four sides of the hood (that's what is missing in all of these "flat plate" hoods). The only slanted element is the baffles, which are mounted at an angle. That's true for almost all baffled kitchen hood liners. That has nothing to do with the ability of the liner to capture and contain effluent.

Kas has posted extensively on the effects of lateral diffusion of effluent as a function of height, width, depth, and design of capture elements. They are worth reviewing to better understand why kas and antss were hooting at the Miele Designer Hood.

Thank you, mojavean, for your support of mjfininc22's original post. I completely agree with you. Question asked between two choices, some advice given, and time elapsed. Perhaps the poster needed to make a purchase decision by the end of the month? He or she did so and thanked GW. I appreciated learning about why other choices might have been better, even after the original poster made up his/her mind. I have dabbled on GW for years, but am just now ready to seriously start planning a kitchen. I'm not clued in to all the "do's and dont's" of
posting(will do my best to read rules, though), and I occasionally notice
negative comments about new posters, and this troubles me. I just want
advice and don't want to be scared off by the pros and regular posters.
