Dyson - HEPA or oxymoron?

I have an almost 10 year old Miele white pearl vac that has been great except that it needs a new cord winder assembly and hose (it's loose at the base). I originally bought it because I have allergies and it was the only "true" hepa vac at the time.

My sister has a Dyson Animal that she swears by. The thing I don't understand is that she says it has a HEPA filter but since it's bagless you have to empty the dust and debris directly out of the machine into the garbage. Unless I'm missing something --- that just doesn't make sense. Won't the emptying of the contents just make the dust escape - totally eradicating any good a HEPA would've done anyway?

Before I cross Dyson off my list -- I was hoping to get better information from other Dyson owners.

Thanks!
