Sub Zero all refrig

We are building a house and are debating about choice of refrig. Definitely don't want s by s...our mud room/utility room has more than enough space for either an additional refrig or freezer. So, at this point, our choice is the Sub Zero all refrigerator in kitchen and upright freezer in utility room (just next to kitchen). Any thoughts?

My Sub Zeros are nearly 20 years old - I have the 501 F and the 501 R. They were the only ones of their kind when I purchased them. And when they go - I'll buy 2 more. I've been completely satisfied with them. I will of course check out the other brands that are now available before putting my money down. But we've been very happy with these.

Mine are 4 years old and they're wonderful. You won't be sorry, I think.

Cool Drawer is a an albatross. On paper all the flexibility looks great, but how often are you going to empty everything to change from cheese, butter and lettuce storage to ice cream and frozen pizzas ??? It doesn't have an ice maker if you choose to use it as a freezer. The biggest drawback is it's width. At 33 11/16 " or 855 mm wide it is too wide to make for efficient access and that is also a non standard cabinet width. Makes planning difficult too. So, you are looking at a MANDATORY custom built cabinet and more $$$. Some factory brands simply won't produce a panel that wide for an integrated look. At approx $2500 ea. It's not cheap either.

Mine is a 36 inch side by side model. If I could do the renovation again, I would have gotten either the 42 side by side, or the 36 over under. There simply isn't a lot of room in this fridge.

As mentioned by Fori, it will be different with the panel on and will probably need re-leveled. Panels aren't light, ours stays open by itself unless it is around 60 deg, then it will slowly shut. Sometimes I'll give the door a shove as I'm walking away from getting something out of it, it takes a pretty good shove to get it past the 60 deg point otherwise it will close a bit but not to the point it'll close it'self. If I need to get something else out I just leave it open which I could never do on our old fridge, not matter where you left the door it would close. With a Sub-Z you don't want to have to re-open it within short periods of time, our kids can't even get it open if it was closed within a minute prior.

The one service company in our town would not honor the warranty because they did not install the fridge and double oven. That was an expensive mistake because they have needed to be serviced more times in 10 years than I can count. Pick another brand!

bafla- this could be an option for me as well. We have been planning on the Sub-zero 700 27" Fridge/Freezer. I'm afraid of not having enough space but don't want to go to the 36" wide. My question is regarding the upright freezer which would fit in my pantry but DH would like to have an icemaker. Do you have a model with this option?

We had SZ 601 all refrigerator & all freezer units in our last home for 19 years & loved them. We put 2 SZ all refrigerator 601 units in our new house, one with an overlay panel for our kitchen food & another with glass front for beverages & party food. Our freezer is the integrated SZ 700 27" all freezer, available with or without an icemaker in the bottom drawer. We also installed a SZ undercounter ice machine, so we did not get an icemaker in the freezer.

We are planning to put the freezer/ice maker in our mud room and didn't plan ongoing with a Sub Zero in that location...that is, if we can find a decent upright freezer with an ice maker. I'll have to search for one.

Gizmonike: I like the idea of a SZ 700 27" all freezer; hadn't looked at that one. Do you like the SZ ice machine? Ice machines seem so pricey! Had never looked at one before this

Please let me know if you find an upright with ice maker. I've done searches and have not come up with one. Like you, I could put the freezer elsewhere (Walk-in pantry). DH won't go for it if we can't get a freezer with an ice maker and I don't want to purchase a separate ice maker, just too many appliances.

Likewise! If you find one, let me know. I agree...too many appliances and those ice makers are a fortune. We are not big "ice people"....just want to have some cubes available.
Thought one of the Frigidaire models would do, but no ice maker. Does that make sense?? A freezer without an ice maker?

I did some searching and came up with a couple of Frigidaire models. One is ice maker ready (it's an added option). I think both are too large for my needs. I don't freeze tons of stuff and we are not huge ice people either. DH wants it for company.

Frigidaire freezer looks promising, but reviewer states that it is extrememly noisy. I can always close the door. We don't freeze too much, either...just when we make our trip to Costco. I'm not a "cook and freeze" person, either...once in a great while, leftover soups or whatever. Seems you and I are on same page re this project!

At any given moment the only thing we have in our freezer is Breyers Chocolate Chip Icecream for DH, popsicles for the kids and a few trays of ice cubes. I may overlook the icemaker option and go for a small upright freezer. I did consider the su-zero freezer drawers but they cost much more than I care to spend. Not really sure why DH would like to have an ice maker this time around as we currently have one in our bottom freezer that we chose NOT to have hooked up.

Make sure whatever you choose you get an automatic defrost vs. manual.

I also thought about the Sub Zero drawers, but don't want to spend that kind of money unless they were incorporated into the kitchen. Thanks for the suggestion of auto vs manual defrost; looked into Kenmore but seems the freezers get negative reviews...leakage, etc.
Also will need an undercounter refrig with small freezer for downstairs...cannot believe how costly they are..over $1000???? Just need small freezer down there for ice cream, whatever.

Our Subzero fridge/freezer on bottom (model 241RED) from 1981 is working just fine. Have had only a few service calls and those were a long time ago.
