It's not a matter of choosing one over the other. I start my seedlings under lights in the basement. The first leaves of those plants are pretty nice, but nowhere near as big and healthy as the leaves which develop later when the plants are growing in the ground under sunlight. Yes, I do harden off my seedlings. But a leaf which has completed it's growth under lights on a small plant will not resume growth and become as large and lush as those which will grow outdoors later on a large plant. Once the plants are outdoors they immediately begin to new leaves which are suited to the new conditions. So, when the time comes to set out the seedlings, the oldest (lower) leaves have served their purpose. New, larger, healthier leaves grow quickly at the top of the plant and take over the role of making food for the plant. Because tomatoes readily form adventitious roots, I remove the lower, less productive leaves and plant deeply. I have never understood the concept of one part of the plant robbing other parts of energy. I believe roots, leaves and stems support each other mutually and must grow proportionally. One part of the plant does not succeed at the expense of the others. If it were so, the ideal tomato plant would be a bunch of leafless, stemless, rootless fruit sitting on the ground. Well, first off you need to be able to put your pictures on the world wide web. You can post them on one of the photo hosting sites, or if you have one, your own web site. If you have only a picture or two, you can upload them to the GardenWeb Gallery. Once you have pictures on the web, you can then copy the link that appears in the address box and paste it into the "Optional Link URL:" that will show up on the second page of the form that you use to start a new thread. If you are on a photo hosting site, you have to do something to make the pictures public, so we can see them without logging in. Not a dumb question at all! I just barely can reach my top downs with no furniture in front of them. In another room I have been debating cordless/corded/tdbu/bu with 6 windows where I DO have furniture in front of one of them. I have been wondering how to deal with it, when I recently had an epiphany. I was visiting my sister after her hip replacement surgery and she had all these interesting implements for various tasks. As soon as I saw her sock puller, I had a vision of a DIY cordless TDBU implement. Here it is. It works great. The L-shape was actually more useful than the cup-hook but it varies depending on direction I was going. My existing cordless tabs have a hole in them. Not all will have this hole, but I think that is ok. The hook can still grab as needed. I could do mine w/o using the hole.
