Gluecille's Tapestry Purse Instructions

This was an absolute hit here in the past. Find the inexpensive tapestry placemats at "dollar stores," usually in sets of 4 or with a table-runner.

Now is the time to look for the placemats and get the good ones before they are all gone - LOL! And you'll need to get the long zippers - they disappear from stores close to Christmas, too.

And if you get started now, they will be all done long before Christmas.

The local dollar stores have either run out of the fall ones or didn't get any this year. The christmas will be out before long. The Christmas ones also make beautiful throw pillows. Some of the designs on the christmas ones like angels could be used any time of year. Red thanks for posting glue's directions.

I'd like to give this a try, but my sewing skills are not only rusty, but limited. I haven't put a zipper in anything forever! I don't know if I could do it or not. I did buy placemats to make a pillow with last year and never did it. Hopefully, you have inspired me do get them out and do it! Thanks for the instructions!

I don't like the feeling of coming home forgetting an item or the feeling of not getting the best deals as possible so I always take a list with me shopping. I have never taken a trip without making a list while packing,lol. When we were renovating the house, I confiscated the entire face of a door with lists,lol. Color-coded too. Workers had their jobs posted everyday. They all teased me and called it "Command Central".( I don't like the feeling of paying people to stand around,lol.) Confession: that could possible warrant a need for at least six months of therapy,lol. Sometimes, when I'm doing chores and do something that wasn't on the list, I then write it on the list just to cross it out! So weird but so true! laffin :o) It's always been an interest of mine as how we all have memory recall so differently. Or, our differences in how we retain things. It was mentioned on the cursive writing thread that some have better recall because thier lists were penned by them instead of typed. I can see that happening,indeed. I've always had difficulty writing. I stutter when I write, for less of a better term. I skip letters in words, suffixes and words in sentences. Worse yet, I have difficulty seeing the misses even when I edit. Needless to say, this flaw affects my spelling. When grammer was introduced, my head was spinning enough just to get words on paper much less the rules, so, grammer never took very well either,lol.(In this post alone, I had to make 13 corrections and look up the spelling of 5 words.) Luckily, I can usually decode my own lists, that look something like this: -paer towls....aka paper towels -plan crums...aka, plain bread crumbs -ginrale...aka, gingerale You get the point,lol. Many a phone calls from Mr. di while he was at the store saying he didn't bring his Ovaltine Decoder Ring and if I could please tell him what the heck I wrote. Another confession: I don't know about you girls, but I just LOVE to see men in the grocery aisles calling their wives for instructions. I'm always suppressing a grin when I stroll by them. Ahh, the simple pleasures, tee hee. Has anyone here besides me ever add "make a list for ...." on their lists? lol ~di

Ivamae - I've sent you an email, but for all those interested in making a jacket from a sweatshirt, I recommend the books by Mary Mulari, "Sweatshirts with Style" and "More Sweatshirts with Style." Sherrmann - I make the t-shirts from a regular t-shirt pattern with a ribbed neckline and set-in sleeves. The dresses are the same as a t-shirt except shorter. The tops are t-shirt knit and the bottoms are just woven yardage. These are not the cutest ones that I made, but a friend agreed to help me make some and wanted to see what they looked like. She lives 3 hours from me, so I took this picture to email to her and since then she has made 23. Some of the ladies in our group don't sew a lot but if I make the t-shirt, they can make the skirt. Sometimes I make both the top and bottom and they just gather it and sew it together. Together we made over 100 dresses last year, but I made 60+ myself. I would like to send as many this year as we did last year. My husband is very generous with both money and (my) time this requires, so I just keep making them. We have been very blessed to find fabric bargains. In addition, we have had people that are not part of our Church group, donate fabric, sewing expertise, and even money to our project because they see what we are doing and know that everthing is going where there is a need. It is one of those charitible things where there is no overhead because we are volunteers. We make sizes 2-4-6-8-10-12. I make some ragland sleeve shirts for boys but I find I can make the set in sleeve faster. We send the clothing to the The Church of Jesus Chrish of Latter Day Saints Distribution Center in Salt Lake City Utah. This center works with the Red Cross, Catholic Charities, and other humanitarian groups to take supplies where they are needed most. I have a son that lives in Africa and he says it is not uncommon to see children 5 and 6 years old on the street with not one stitch of clothing on their body. I have this mental picture in my mind. Everytime I finish a garment and hold it up to look at this simple piece of clothing, I remember that it will clothe one of Heavenly Father's children somewhere in the world. That keeps me sewing and teaching others to sew. We have made some other childrens clothing, but our emphasis has been on t-shirts and t-shirt dresses. They don't have fasteners to wear out or break and render the garment useless. I have also made long sleeve sweat shirts, but I think they mostly use those for sleepwear. This time of the year, I am working in my yard and garden but when the days get hot (or it rains), I will be back at my sewing machines. It's a good thing. Ah - dog chains!! Cute idea, Susan! Somewhere on the Internet I saw another a novel approach to handles... the person used that thick-walled clear plastic tubing that is used in aquarium tanks, table fountains, etc. She slithered pretty ribbon inside the handles. I think she even used a metallic pen or gel pen and wrote the recipient's name or a seasonal greeting over and over on the ribbon for one set of handles. I just can't remember how she neatly attached the tubing to the purses - maybe she squeezed the ends flat and covered them with a patch or triangle of Ultrasuede or leather or something similar. Most sewing machines will easily sew right through plastic. I think these handles would remain upright, which is convenient. Would also be handy on bags being used by children who might have sticky hands as the plastic tubing could be cleaned with a damp cloth. [Wish I could remember where I saw it!]

Barb, couldn't you make the purse without a zipper? I would think that strong magnets would work nicely, or velcro, or maybe even a tab in the center with a beautiful button.

The ones that Mother and I made last year had the strong magnets as the closure. One of the things we did was to pick out the hem and iron flat before starting too. Your lining could be made like a second bag, inserted into the bag and top stitched to hold in place. That's when you'd add the magnetic snaps.

Barb, you can use a separating zipper for this. That is probably the easiest zipper you can put in and they are really strong.

Oh, forgot to mentionÂ that is what I'm doing today. I've been off work all week and am planning on making me a new purse today. Monday I made DH a duffle bag out of camouflage material and it turned out really cute. Don't tell him I said it was cute or he won't use it and if you notice I have to call it a duffle bag. I'll post a pic when I can. Some friends have taken him fishing and he took it with him or I would post one now.

I remember that purse..because my friend and I sat down and sewed 7 of them one weekend! Talk about fun! It's a super easy pattern , after that weekend I make 4 more for presents!
