hot hot and more hot
Comments (67)Well we are starting to get into our late summer weather pattern where it can be cool one day and scorching the next. We had a cold front push through last night and brought a good rain to my area. today we are having what I call a "california day" 60's in the morning and mid 80's during the day. Ive never been to CA but I imagine thats what its like, LOL The next 7 days are forecasted to be like this. Its such a welcome relief but also a reminder that I need to get the greenhouse ready and start making plans for overwintering. Our first frost isnt until October so I have time. Our weather here can be so crazy that it made me think of a few things. Those who live or lived here may relate and those who may visit might take this advice. You really have to be like a boy scout to live here. In the middle of winter we will have days in the 80's and then the next day it can snow 6-8 inches. The opposite is also true, snow in the morning and mid 50's to 60's by afternoon. In the summer it will get to 110 and the next morning it can be in the 60's. I have left for work in the morning and it was colder by 20-30 degrees when i left in the afternoon. anyways it keeps you on you toes. Mike...See More?? Misting leaves while in the shade with HOT temps
Comments (11)Hi FelixCat and all., No I have never had rust, only get it when I order from florida, more damp conditions, I take off the leaves and put the plant in sun, kills it. I live in a Semi-Arrid area, very dry hot, rarely any humidity, rarely any rain. Right now in drought conditions. cannot water after 9 am to 4 pm. Yes, my plumeria oddly get very dirty. I go out and wipe them off with my hands and can get dirt off, seems dirt clings to some of the leaves. It like when you grow plants in the house, if your leaves are dirty, you washed them off to allow them to breathe or accept light.. the oil in your hands makes the plants shine. I am careful now not to wash them off if its going into the low 60's, now some cool humidity at night. don't want the plants to pull dampness to maybe breed bugs..will wait until the morning, 80 degree temps tomorrow, when light moves in the shade, have morning and afternoon light..then wash off only if needed. After 5 or 6 pm no, watering or washing off, stays damp all night, can cause problems to plants. Now if 90 degrees out, well this can all change. ha we are cooling down. I have followed this way, never have had bugs, never had rust, no problems at all. Perhaps is from growing roses, seeing what can happen to plants. I think I raise plumeria like my roses! I had at one time 125 rose bushes. I showed them in competions, shows etc. There again, never water after 4 pm..can cause black spot, mildew, and aphids..So maybe learned from this..don't know.. I feel this works for me. Damp conditions, you all have different problems to work with..I have to watch for West sun, burns in my area, but not in others..You have to learn what your plants can handle. Comments (10)Bill, I know the local weathermen always comment on how great the dry air is when we occasionally have it in the summer. Yes, it FEELS better, but it's a lot harder on the plants. I actually prefer the humidity and I know that our region is so green because of it. Even when we go thru droughts (like this summer), the humidity keeps everthing surviving. Well, we just got 5" of rain over several days from the tropical depressions, so rain is not an issue anymore. LOL! But there is no question that plumerias do enjoy humidity. Mine put on extraordinary growth over the summer time. I'm not sure the humidity makes more intense flowers without the heat though....See MoreHot Lips color change - temp or light?
Comments (7)Man, I was gonna just post this very question! I'm not even a salvia fan really, but when I saw 'hot lips', I decided to break down and get it. And wouldn't you know it, it went all white on me. It was gorgeously bicolored when I got it, and has since only bloomed white. We don't even get into the 80's really, let alone 105, so I don't think it's heat stress, LOL. (I live outside San Francisco, CA; where it hovers around 65-70 degrees for most of the year) I'm ready to give it the old heave-ho if it doesn't start showing me some color...
