Favorite thing to do when you can't garden
Comments (25)Reading! Which I have lots of time for, now that I've been laid off since last November. Well, maybe not as much as I would want, since now it falls to me instead of DH to do all the stuff around the house. There's been a lot of 'finish up' work to do after the most recent remodeling. It is great fun to crawl around the floor taping and painting moldings, for example -- NOT!! But one of the projects we did was to turn our dark, yucky enclosed storage shed into a beautiful lanai, complete with painted walls, cushioned chairs and even a comfy rug underfoot. So with the summer finally arriving, there's a wonderful place for us to curl up with an iced tea and read comfortably for a relaxing afternoon. It's even better than a vacation -- just step out the door and it's there. Wonderful!...See Morebeach house owners-favorite things?
Comments (12)We built our beach house about 11 years ago. It's right on the beach (Gulf of Mexico). A couple of my husband's best friends died and he decided that we would enjoy life to the fullest...and we do at the beach! I put a starfish or sand dollar over each doorway and window. We have model sailboats mounted on the walls. We have a very old oar over the 6 large windows in the living room. LLBean had a beautiful rug with lighthouses, whales, sailboats and a coastal village that is in my living room. I used blue and yellow throughout the house. We put a laundry sink in our large pantry and it is great for sandy feet, sandy babies and sandy dogs. I have terry robes in the 2 guest bedrooms with the name of our beach house embroidered on them. I try to stay away from the cheapy beach stuff to decorate. We have a weather station (wind speed, temp, etc) that we really like. We sail so it's important but we love looking at the recall to see the high wind speed or temp. We keep extra sunglasses, flip flops, bathroom stuff. Always movies and popcorn and ice cream. I love being able to go down without taking clothing or food because it is already there. And we have great neighbors. Comments (20)My mini Dachshund curled up next to me. Her happy dance when I come home from running errands. Just watching all the funny things she does which makes me laugh. Early morning coffee with 1/2&1/2, snuggling on the sofa with my dog under a blanket. It so peaceful and quiet before everyone is up. Watching the sunrise over the field behind the house. I love the early morning light. Working up in my garden, even doing weeding is fun on a beautiful sunny day. Watching my dog chase the lizards, but never catching any. So funny! Having veggies from that garden all year long. Enjoying my roses well into December and picking a bouquet to bring into the house. The crisp cool feel and smell of Fall in the air. I love wearing light jackets and sweaters. A fire in the fireplace weekend mornings. Drinking hot cocoa or chai on a Fall & Winter day. Doing lots of holiday baking. Getting all the work that has to be done so I can have play time to work on all my craft hobbies. Trying out a new craft for the first time. Those are just a few of my favorite things. Comments (11)Beckysharp - so sweet to post this! Its been so long since I've blogged and I love the fellowship with other design lovers! My hope with my new "old" house was to historically restore it, but alas it was too far gone. Time, weather and new building standards and codes made it too cost prohibitive for us to tackle in the most museum like- historic sense. We are trying very hard re-create many of the original features of the house and keep all its inherent charm. Like all old homes, over the the years there were updates and renovations. The kitchen was re-done in the late 60's early 70's, walls were removed, a library ripped apart to make room for a family room, and the cook and maids rooms were rehabbed. A bathroom was added to the first floor in a very odd location. The original house was set up for fine living and as such household rooms (i.e. kitchen, Laundry, pantry) , which in the 1900's were delegated to the staff, were small, cramped and not very attractive for a modern family. In fact, prior to the 1960-70 renovation, the only way to enter the kitchen was thru a small butlers pantry. Original owners spent their days in the living room, dining room, library and beautiful porches. The original home did not even include a bath on the first floor. We did not change the floor plan from the previous renovation except to move the bath, the rest remains the same. This project is a labour of love for us. We have done exhaustive research to try to be accurate as possible, especially with the exterior, as we love the old New England shingle-style homes and want to preserve the aesthetic and the feeling of our beautiful area. But it's important for others to remember that it will be our year round home, not a summer cottage, so liberties were taken inside to make the house usable for our family now and in the future (empty nesters, children and grandchildren!). Over the next few months we will be putting everything back together - so keep checking in and remember things are just starting to taking shape - sometimes the smallest detail can be the one element that makes all the difference. We are very excited to finish! Thanks for sharing! xox...See MoreRelated Professionals
