Can I put a convection microwave in a cabinet?

I know that people have often put regular microwave ovens in cabinets, and also know that one has to be careful to make sure that the cabinet doors provide sufficient clearance. My question is whether having a cnvection microwave adds any issues? Can a convection microwave be put behind a cabinet door just like a regular microwave? (I was even considering using doors with an open panel design that would allow air circulation, if that were necessary.)

yes, your microwave needs as much air as before. The convection feature is inside. If the microwave oven needs even more air than before, someone wil be sure to tell you soon, but that I don't know.

yes a convection/micro needs more air than a standard and almost all take air in on the top and exhaust it at the bottom thru the mandatory trim kits.

Putting them behind a door is not a good idea but it's possible. You may run afoul of an inspector in some locales if one is involved.

I'm looking at replacing our microwave with the micro/conv combo so I'm interested in responses too. We have a convection gas range but I would probably still use the smaller oven quite frequently. Do you have a toaster oven? Might it replace part of that functionality too? We just had our toaster oven die and I couldn't find a new one I liked so we ordered a toaster for now and I'm not sure I will replace the toaster oven if the combo oven would do the trick. Still deciding...

It depends on your particular microwave and cabinet brands. You'll want to look at the spects for your microwave and see what the side, back and top clearances it requires are. Once you have that info, you need to make sure the cabinet walls and slid-in doors are at least this difference away from the microwave. Where the cabinet brand comes into play is how much room the slid in doors take up, and whether you want/can get doors that slide-in on the sides or on the top. We wanted a door that would slide in the top, but our cabinet company only offered doors that slid-in on the sides. Our cabinet is a 27" base cabinet, excluding the width of the cabinet walls and slide in assembly, there is 22" of usable space (according to the cabinet company). The ventilation room is slightly bigger b/c the doors really only occupy part of the asslembly space. This means that our 20.5" microvave fits in there with 2" of clearance space between its sides and the doors when they are slid in, which complies with the microwave's specs.

After calling around our small town, it seams that the only one available is the GE Profile. Sears can order one in and it will be here in 14 days or so. I think I might go that route. Like you say, its nice to know I can have an extra oven. I am hoping it will replace the ugly toaster oven on the counter. I hate that thing but it is so handy for my son to heat things up. I will decide today to get the old Whirlpool Gold fixed or get a new GE Profile. The GE looks much better than what I have. :)
